The developer blog for EA's Dead Space has a couple of little interesting new details in regards to the game. First up on the game end, it's revealed that there is going to be no cut scenes in the game at all. The entire story is going to be told in the game through live scripted events. There are also going to be video and audio logs spread through out the levels, which makes me think of BioShock's story telling system. Glad to see that's really catching on. The team is currently working heavily on the story aspect of the game. I really want to hear all the temp voice acting that's they're listening to right now. It has to be so hilarious.
We're also given some small details on the animated feature and comic side of Dead Space. I don't know about you, but I just love it when additional stories are given to a videogame through other mediums (i.e. Halo, Tomb Raider, etc).
There's also some talk about cake that's flavored with caramel, butterscotch, buttercream, frosted chocolate, and mayonnaise hybrid thingy. It sounds gross, but it apparently isn't. Oh and hey, it looks like Chuck Beaver wants you all to harass him on the blog. Go leave some questions about anything in regards to the story, comic, and animated feature if you have any. Who knows, maybe they'll reveal to us some new details.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Yeah I figured there would be at least one PC game that I didn't know about. I didn't have a computer until last summer, so I'm kinda out of the loop there.
As if his helmet wasn't enough..
*well they were audio in the cd-rom version, on the floppy version it was plain text of course)
Gorefest..!? Oh hell if they're vaguely huminiod I'll have to import..stupid Australia...!
Really looking forward to this game since there's not been enough decent Sci-Fi horror (Run Like Hell..was not..good). Though between this and the new Alien game should be set for Sci-Fi horror for a bit..yay.
The audio log storytelling mechanic originated in the Looking Glass Studio's System Shock. It is not an original idea thought up JUST for Bioshock. It was also used in the superior System Shock 2. Fortunately, since Ken Levine and the majority of the SS2 people also worked on Bioshock, it can easily be considered as following up using an already proven mechanic.
Mr Lazy
Doom 3 is obviously id's attempt at remaking System Shock 2. It's pretty plainly an homage to Irrational's best work. It just happens to be not as good, and take place on Mars with a bunch of demons running about. If you liked Doom 3, you simply must play SS2.
Game is looking pretty awesome alright, but I'm so fucking pissed off at EA about the rock band cuntasstry that I'm just not getting hyped about this.
Being serious though, audio logs used in the manner in which Bioshock employed them is lazy storytelling, regardless of how good the story being told may be. I loved the atmosphere in Bioshock, and am hoping I will love the atmosphere in Dead Space, but the audio logs in Bioshock really kind of lessened the game's impact for me because they just feel extremely contrived and are about as feasible as classified corporate secrets being discovered in a shack in the middle of a park in Raccoon City, if you catch my meaning.
huh??? ones set in space, the other in central park. one is called dead space the other alone in the dark...what's so confusing?
*nudge-nudge* *wink-wink*
