New content for Final Fantasy XI announced with extra moogle photo

I know most people that played Final Fantasy XI played it when it first came out and have likely forgotten about it since in favor of newer, shinier things. Square hasn't deserted the online community though, and they recently announced even more new content coming soon for the title.

The new add-on is called "A Moogle Kupo d’Etat™ – Evil in Small Doses" and is slated to launch at the end of July. The only prerequisite to play it is that your main character's job level be at ten or above, which I'm sure came and went a long time ago for you hardcore FF XI players. All we really know about the add-on's storyline is that the moogles are in trouble and most likely need your help. How can you deny a moogle?

If you have a Playstation 3, you can prepurchase this content starting on July 5th. Be warned you have to have the Rise of the Zilart expansion installed before you can play it, though. Is this something you're thinking of picking up, or are you waiting for Final Fantasy XIV?

SQUARE ENIX ANNOUNCES PRE-SALE DATE FOR NEXT ADD-ON SCENARIO FOR
FINAL FANTASY XI

LOS ANGELES (June 29, 2009) – Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in North America, today announced that the second add-on scenario for FINAL FANTASY® XI, their MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), will begin pre-sale on July 5, 2009. Titled “A Moogle Kupo d’Etat™ – Evil in Small Doses,” this upcoming add-on scenario will launch simultaneously worldwide later this summer.

Beginning on July 5, 2009, “A Moogle Kupo d’Etat – Evil in Small Doses” will be available for pre-purchase for $9.99 via the PlayOnline® Viewer. Slated to launch at the end of July following the next FINAL FANTASY XI version update, players whose in-game character’s main job level is at least 10 can begin to enjoy this new content. Introducing a brand-new story arc, this new scenario requires the purchase and installation of RISE OF THE ZILART®, the first expansion pack in the FINAL FANTASY XI series.

The development of these add-on scenarios, including the already launched “A Crystalline Prophecy™ – Ode of Life Bestowing” and the upcoming third and final scenario, “A Shantotto Ascension™ – The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born,” is led by Masato Kato, who created the stories and scenarios for FINAL FANTASY XI and its first expansion pack, RISE OF THE ZILART. With the summer release of this second scenario, “A Moogle Kupo d’Etat – Evil in Small Doses,” players will delve into a dark mystery set in motion by a single drop of water.

STORY

It all started with an innocent drop of rainwater and a rickety, ramshackle Mog House desperately in need of repair.

Little did anyone suspect that this would be the beginning of a harrowing nightmare unheard of in the annals of moogle-kind.

Accommodating players in North America, Europe and Japan, FINAL FANTASY XI is the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game capable of simultaneous multiplayer cooperation across three different platforms. Now in its eighth year of service, FINAL FANTASY XI has a robust community of 500,000 subscribers from around the world. The series continues to evolve and expand, offering newcomers and fans alike an immersive, engrossing and engaging universe to traverse, defend and explore.

Hummm, Wikipedia doesn't list the PS3 as a platform for Final Fantasy XI. Did I miss something?

I feel like this is the second time they've used the phrase "Kupo d'Etat," but it's still awesome.

I just picked up FFXI on 360 for $20 from newegg ($10 for vanilla, $10 for Wings expansion) so I've been playing it a bit. They've definitely improved the game in the past few years, made it a lot more accessible for people who don't have time to play for hours per session, and for people who prefer soloing over group combat. It's still really difficult and unforgiving compared to games like WoW, but I think it's worth playing if you're a fan of the FF universe.

I think I'll wait on FFXIV at this point. What I've heard of it makes it sound like Monster Hunter, which might make it awesome.

Even without backwards compatibility?

I find it odd how every article involving FFXI from any gaming website always hints at the idea that the game has been long forgotten by everyone, despite having over 2 million active characters.

Anyway, worth pointing out is the fact that this expansion will be download only, not available in stores anytime soon, if at all.

@CBunn, no I'm pretty sure you need that :)

My friend used to play FFXI religiously but I didn't have broadband so it wasn't a possibility. I will probably pick it up soon actually. Good to know they're still supporting it :)

As unangbangkay said, I cannot wait for FFXIV to be released, as it will most likely be my first MMO also.
