The first level involved manning the turrets on a flying PBY Catalina boat plane in the Pacific. Attacking a Japanese merchant ship, the game controlled the path of the PBY as the player rained bullets down below, taking out spotlights, gunners, and causing massive destruction to pieces of the ship. During the demo, Treyarch placed a lot of emphasis on the damage caused to the ship; it looked impressive, with huge explosions taking off chunks of the crumbling vessel.
While we didn't see the complete PBY level, Treyarch hinted at some gameplay that takes place later in the area, which involves landing the plane in the water. It's unclear if control will be given to the player, but it was made to sound like you'll continue to man the PBY's .50 caliber tunnel guns and the like.

We were then shown some gameplay from the game's European campaign, which took place in a war-torn Russian city. The level faded in, the player's character injured and just coming to. Not far from where he was lying, an injured Russian sniper called for help; in poor health, his hands no longer steady, he asks that you man his sniper rifle for him.
"Sniping an enemy is like hunting any other animal," he says. "Fire at the wrong moment and your chance will be lost forever."
With an emphasis on patience and timing, the right moment here was when passing bombers would drown out the sounds of your gun fire. As they passed overhead, the Russian shouted to indicate it was time to fire, and with a steady hand the player dropped soldiers one by one. The remainder of the level was of typical Call of Duty intensity as the player and the Russian made their way through the area: lots of explosions, an escape from a burning building, and taking fire from snipers perched in building above.

Lately, Treyarch have been taking a lot of flak for bringing the Call of Duty franchise back to World War II. But everything I've seen so far is looking sharp. The team looks to have taken a lot of cues from the Infinity Ward team and its work on Modern Warfare; the extra development time they're being afforded for the title (more than double than that of their previous Call of Duty efforts) looks like it's being put to good use.
Call of Duty: World at War should hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii this fall. [Note: Treyarch demoed the game on an Xbox 360; the Wii version is said to be using the same -- but slightly modified -- tech for its version, which should be a similar experience.]
Looks great, can't wait to hopefully pick it up this fall.
i kinda hate them for taking it back to WW2... but i like the new gameplay aspects their trying to implement if they do them right... but i still hate WW2 games.
This needs to be either continually suprising 1st time around, or epic in size of battles at anyone time.
Treyarch are continously making me want this game more, but I have no illusions about it possibly being better than COD4. Or even coming close.
dull
I really want this one to be good. But I know Treyarcs history in game design.
When this drops to 20-30 dollar range, I'll buy it. Until then, no thanks Treyarc.
I will admit, the shooting the boat from the bubble gunpod screenshot looks like it could be cool.
I still have my doubts, but I'll continue to be interested. Sure, it's probably going to be a pretty good game, but will it reach or surpass the high standards set by COD4? I know they are probably tired of already (the games not even out yet) being compared to COD4, but there's no avoiding it.
ñaca ñaca, great pics.
Lets see how the gameplay delivers, Im sort of tired of ww2 games.
great pics, and also sounds pretty good, however I'm so fucking tired of shooting with crappy guns of that age... I mean they didn't even have a true brilliant sniper-rifle back then...
whenever i hear about this game i have the sudden urge to yawn.
Not interested at all for some reason
Wasn't there a sniper mission and an on the rails plane mission in Call of Duty 4? Damn Treyarch you guys are creative. They're obviously copying everyone's favourite missions from CoD4 and hoping that it makes their game good.
wasn't that interested but this article has let me hold onto the small smidgen of hope i have left for treyarch, the extra development time is the only logical source of hope! :D
i thought you were talking about the player having messed up hands for a second, that would have actually be genuinly interesting!
Still feeling that DO NOT WANT
@Soulwax
I find it amazing that you ignore every game before COD4 to feature sniping and a level on rails.
If there hadn't been so many generic WWII shooters prior to this, would we be as hard on this game as we are? I sincerely doubt it. Instead of judging it based on setting, why don't we view it as an individual game?
Gotta love that this-gen grey.
I can't wait to play in those forested levels. Looks like a lot of fun.
Looks kinda cool.
looks good but...i'm pretty fucking tired of WW2
know it's cool to hate on Treyarch, but this looks pretty sweet
Where's my "Call Of Duty: Vietnam?".
WW2 has been played out to death. Infinity Ward already gave us an epic modern day shooter. Why doesn't Treyarch take the tech to someplace less explored, or not already mastered?
Korea and Vietnam, heck, even a WW1 game would be a welcome change of pace!
well it LOOKS pretty.
atleast infinity ward is looking towards the future. well wayyyyy towards the future now with their space age cod 6.
god i'm so tired of WWII games... i was SO excited about the sequel too-- damnit
I really don't care much, but I'm keeping an eye on it. Who knows?
it looks damn good but going back to wwDeuce is the worst mistake they coulda made. i'm not touching another ww2 game till they make a Jew vs. Nazi game. who wouldn't love game play aspects such as hiding in pianos, attics, etc. fused with awesome tripping nazis with bananna peels, or pouring a bucket of water on a road in the dead of winter just before them nazis come marching down the street. it's like metal gear and mario kart sans karts.
@ MechaMonkey
I have absolutely no problems with the game being set in WW2 and I'm not judging by the time period that it's set in.
The problem I do have with the game is that Treyarch are purely riding off the success (and to a small extent, the mission structure) of Call of Duty 4.
