Atlus had us play the guessing game to figure out what their upcoming title that started with a "G" would be. We guessed it a long time ago, but here's the official confirmation.
Gungnir [how do you pronounce that?] is coming to the US on June 12, 2012. It comes from the awesome folks at Sting, makers of other fine titles like Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare. Gungnir is a strategy RPG for the PSP, so it's like they were thinking of me when they secured the publishing rights. I appreciate that, Atlus.
Atlus has put a new page up for Gungnir, so poke around there if you want a better idea of what we're getting next summer. We also have some screenshots from the Japanese version in our gallery below.
It looks I'll be playing this on my Vita. What about you? Are you ready for some Sting SRPG goodness?

Meet the rest of the team
Props to Atlus for bringing back the Japanese game love! They've been overtaken by the likes of NISA and Xseed lately so I'm glad to see something very awesome like this game.
Personally I was hoping for Gangster: A Summon Knight Story, but with Atlus I'll take most anything. I'm not a fan of SRPGs, but there are a few I enjoyed.
Also, phonetically I think it would be "güŋnēr".
The best way to pronounce it in English would be be goo (the substance) + ng (as in the end of "long" or "young") + ee (as in eel) + r.
Why do these game make all the characters look like 8 to 10 year olds? I mean I get the target audience and the ability for them to relate to their peers in a game, but to me, an old school gamer, I cannot at all relate to playing a preteen in a game.
Yggdra Union was really good. Knights in the Nightmare shows why games shouldn't be designed by schizophrenics. Hopefully this one will be closer to Yggdra Union.
Loved Tactics Ogre and FF Tactics, working on Jeanne D'arc now, so if it is a mixture of those and Yggdra Union, I'll be good to go.
On what system will I play it?--well July 2012 is still a long ways off. For PSP games, I stick it in my Amazon cart and wait for a sale; if a PSN sale happens before that then fine but it rarely does (although that is how I got Persona 3, Yggdra Union, and Knights in the Nightmare, so maybe). I do pretty well with that system. Got a big stack of games still to play. God Eater Burst is the last hold out of PSP games I want, that poor sucker is still sitting in the Amazon cart for ages.
I was super excited for this until I realized, "I don't know anything about this game. But it's by Atlas and it's called Gungnir, which sounds awesome." And, I'm actually okay with that. I'm still excited!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
(and so did several other people).
Never really got into SRPGs but I'd totally be down for this if it had a cool use of Norse mythology.
so this is their big reveal? A new srpg for the psp... in June of next year....
Meh....
You'd rather have a spinoff of a Dept. Heaven game than an actual Dept. Heaven game?
@JQM78
Atlus's PSP games are usually downloadable too. So if you're getting a Vita down the road, you can still play it.
What happened to the other ds union game?
It's actually more like "Goong-naer" Not sure how I'd write it out phonetically for English speakers :O
But since they now started with "Guess the next Game with G" that probably will be Growlanser IV. ;)
I got Knights in the Nightmare and Riviera for DS and GBA. This better not be a PSP exclusive.
