New artwork and screens of the gorgeous Skullgirls photo

A game which caught me completely by surprise this past GDC was Skullgirls, a 2D fighter with incredible art design and animation. It reminds me of Arc System Works fighters such as BlazBlue with its fluid movement and the concept of the hats being the source of the characters' powers (which, honestly, feels a little cribbed from Guilty Gear's Millia Rage).

Here we have a glut of new screenshots and concept art released for the game. Marvel at their bright, vibrant colors and fantasize about controlling such lovely ladies on your PS3 or Xbox 360. You'll get your chance later this year.

The 'hats being their source of power' only applies to the characters you can currently play as. Everyone else has their own deal going on.

:P

I really hope the BlazBlue comparison only extends to the art style. My girlfriend and I both kind of hated that game. (To compare, she really likes TvC.)

If you guys want to see more of the art, please check out Alex Ahad's work. http://oh8.deviantart.com/ (I'd post his actual website, but it's not the most elegant thing in the world)

I've always been a fan of his style and the guy deserves credit for his amazing work.

conerning 2D-fighters i am usually not the nitpicking-type, but this character design looks like it was made for a french yogurt-product (aiming for the Yu-Gi-Oh!-buyers-segment

As long as it plays with simplicity, has depth to its fighting system, and allows for an actual fight to take place (none of this MvC3 "keep 'em defenseless until they die" bullshit), then screw the art style, I'll gladly take it. Playing is believing when it comes to fighting games.

I'll believe it's a fighting game for fighting fans when they're ready to show people more than the same two characters doing the exact same things in the exact same pose.

Surely they have, y'know, concept arts or working sprites for other fighters?

Ehhh... I'm sorry, but this art style does absolutely nothing for me. Looks like a Guilty Gear/BlazBlue wannabe with only female characters. There's just something really amateurish about it.

Ugh, what are you guys suddenly complaining about? It looks like a flash-game? The art-style looks like they grow tumors? It's gonna be a rip-off? Get serious.

I must admit, it might not exactly be the greatest thing on earth, but it has a lot of potential. It looks like it has solid gameplay and Mike Z certainly seems like a trustworthy guy. And the art-style isn't something completely new and revolutionary - come on, you guys, it's influenced by current art-styles, mostly from the far east. Your eyes had the pleasure to feast on shit like this before, plen-ty of times.

I don't know where all of this hostile crap is coming, from, but I don't like it. To each their own, yes, but the complaints I heard so far were only troublesome and hard to take serious. I hate to defend this game since it seems I would do so because it's a low-(if-any-)budget-indie-title. That's wrong; any game at all should be equally treated. That's not why I defend it. I just dig the art-style and the things I'm seeing so far, as well as the heart the people involved seem to be putting into this.

@Everyday Legend: It seems they take care of that. You also seem to talk about something they called "Infinites", tossing and toying around with the helpless enemy until their HP are completely drained, right? That won't happen; the game detects such Infinites and gives the helpless other player the option to break free. The game seems balanced and is supposed to be fun for pros and newbies alike.

Ugh. I have great disdain for anything western-made anime art style. It just feels cheap to me for some reason. I think its because that most of the people who make it lack the proper manga art school training.

There are indeed concept arts and sprites for all of the other characters. In fact, the website originally had all of that stuff but I guess Alex or Mike or the Web devs wanted to hide some stuff. As mentioned before though, the "concept art" has been around for a long time, and I've been watching it for almost as long. As previously linked: http://oh8.deviantart.com/

Normally, I'll sympathize without on that, but this game looks like it will be a high-quality fighting game that won't be just using an anime artstyle as just a lame gimmick.

wasn't meant that hostile (just my impression), anyway, early feedback (and even hostile crap)might be useful for developing something decent.
furthermore, since we all are - by now - used to conventions of asian art styles, we are able to differentiate between gem and the uninspired.
i do like the sketches but the on-screen-material still doesn't overwhelm me.
->agreed, the heart is shines through though

Sorry, didn't think of you when saying "hostile crap." I didn't mean to be insultive or anything. That's the thing - conflict usually means progress and I'm all for that. Five-word-trollan-comments aren't proposing any positive pgoress, though. That's what bothers me so. Here we have a game by a small and aspiring team and everyone shits on it before it can even get out of the womb.

Sorry if that gave you some weird pictures to imagine.

Anyway, I just want to see this given a chance despite the mainstream-industry being so big. It seems good and if it indeed IS good, I want it to reach as many people as possible.

@Red TheHaze Veron
I see where you're coming from - many artists you see these days are really trying too hard and get themselves stuck in some other culture's style without making any progress with their skills. It's quite sad.

The "manga art school training"-part really caught me by surprise though and took quite some credibility from your comment. What the hell is a "manga art school training?" I hope a thing like that really doesn't exist. From what I can tell, the lead artist, Alex Ahad, has taken a lot of influences from current-anime-styles (no shit, Sherlock!) but has mixed them with something else that I find enjoyable. He seems to know his trade. So... I don't know ENTIRELY where you come from with your entire comment. Haha.
