New Aliens vs. Predator game announced, our second jaws are salivating already photo

Sega has just announced that it is continuing to make use of the Aliens license by publishing a brand new Aliens vs. Predator title due for release next year. The game is currently going under the simple title of Aliens vs. Predator, and there are no gameplay details or system announcements yet, but there is one rather brilliant bit of news attached to this game's reveal.

This brand new AvP is going to be developed by Rebellion, the same team responsible for 1999's incredibly well regarded FPS of the same name that became a LAN party staple at the turn of the century. While no details have been announced thus far, it is reasonable to assume that this game will be a continuation of that hot multiplayer franchise.

This is incredibly exciting news for fans of Aliens games, and I am thrilled by the announcement. Getting a fresh chance to play as teams of Xenomorphs and Predators online is enough to make me wetter than a Facehugger's underportions.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 11, 2009) – SEGA of America Inc., SEGA Europe Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox L&M) today reveals exciting new details of their increasing portfolio of upcoming games based on Twentieth Century Fox’s Aliens universe.

SEGA will publish an all-new Aliens vs. Predator (working title) game in early 2010. The game is currently in development with independent developer Rebellion, creators of the original 1999 Aliens versus Predator; a legendary title that went on to define an entire generation of multiplayer gaming.

With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, SEGA has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio.

“The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us,” says CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, “It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming’s most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans.”

“SEGA continues to create masterful games based on our Aliens franchise and this new addition is sure to continue their successful track record,” said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox L&M.

SEGA will announce further details of the new Aliens vs. Predator very soon.

AVP 1 and 2 (by Monolith) were really good fun online, and this is incredible news!

I was a huge fan of the original back in the day but it's 10 years later how many people who worked on the original are still working for rebellion.
Well anyway, drowing myself in sugar and then playing in just infra-red vision never gets old.

This has potential. The previous AVP that Rebellion did on PC was amazing. The engine and everything about it was awesome. If they use that as their backbone and just build off of it, it could be absolutely incredible. I was one of the few people that liked the first game more than the second. Don't get me wrong, Monolith did an amazing job but the engine in the first was so much better for the game and the atmosphere. Being able to destroy lights was one of the coolest and creepiest things about the game, especially online. Well and the whole dismembering system was sweet too! We need a new amazing AVP game. I'm so excited right now. First Colonial Marines and now this. I hope to god both don't suck ass.

I thought AvP 2 was the better game, but it's still pretty good news. I have my original AvP OEM discs around here somewhere. I feel like playing it again.

I had to stop playing AVP2. There was only so much running backwards, emptying my clip into chasing aliens face, that my poor heart could take. And don't get me started on what happend if I back-ran into a wall. Scared the Bejeezus out of me.

Unfortunately Kotaku says this will be the first of their Aliens games to get released, which means a delay for Colonial Marines.

This is bad news. The Kotaku story says that AvP will be the first Alien game that Sega will publish and that Aliens: Colonial Marines has been pushed to 2010. Fuck! That game was announced in, what, 2006? Enough with the delays already! I have a feeling that it will be canceled just like the first Aliens: Colonial Marines for the PS2. I'd much rather have a pure Alien game over an AvP anyday.

And where the hell is the Aliens RPG Sega announced along with Aliens: Colonial Marines way back in 2006?

AvP1 was an awesome game (didn't care much for the sequel) but since then Rebellion seemed to have fallen apart. I'd like this to be a return to form but I have doubts.
