Never say never: Sony says that Microsoft is eyeing Blu-ray photo

Stan Glasgow, Sony US president, says that they are in talks with Microsoft to add Blu-ray drives to their hardware. And right now, the only hardware Microsoft has is the Xbox 360.

This was announced at a media dinner, where it was also mentioned that similar talks are taking place with Apple. Up until now, both Apple and Microsoft have had some focus on downloadable high-definition content, though Glasgow isn't worried about this content overtaking Blu-ray.

“Downloading will build over time, but this will be over a period of years,” he said.

The Financial Times points out that a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with Sony, but at the same time would have them paying out extra revenues to Sony. It would also probably mean a more expensive Xbox 360.

If talks are going on, Microsoft isn't fessing up: ”We have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.”

It's hard for me to imagine this happening, at least right now. We've been hearing rumors for some time, but I think Microsoft would lose some face if they included Blu-ray in their console too early.

What do you think? Are we still of the "don't care about movies in our game consoles" stance?

On the one hand, Sony would be getting money off of the 360, which would be cool. But on the other hand, this could be Sony's big "Fuck you" to M$.

If Microsoft adds Blu-ray to the XBox 360, the PS3 loses it's only true advantage. I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I can't see a 360 equipped with Blu-Ray for the same reason it didn't work with HD DVD - Makes the 360 too expensive and the read speeds are too slow. So, MS would have to make the HDD standard at the same time.

I can see a Blu-Ray add-on just for movie playback though.

If MS makes any sort of deal, I feel like it would just be another add-on drive. Blu-Ray read speed is still too slow to replace the Xbox 360's DVD drive and I imagine shoehorning a Blu-Ray drive into the 360 would wreak havoc on load times and playability of current 360 games. Not to mention the fact that the 360 doesn't have nearly a large enough hard drive to install games a la PS3.

I’m with HarassmentPanda. Ron keeps saying this’ll never happen, so I’m going to assume that if it ever does, it’ll only be in the form of an add-on drive.

Who said they were adding it to hardware available now?

Blu Ray in the 3rd Xbox, you heard it here first.

360 will just have an add on blu-ray player like it did with hd-dvd. it will NOT have it built into it. Future machine might.

I think an add-on drive is more likely than adding it into the console itself.

Why would MS lose face if they included a blu ray option to the console? They constantly remind everyone that they are a game system first, but the option for blu ray add-on couldn't possibly be a bad thing. No?

I am confused, Sony only plays a part in the Blu Ray group, why does everyone think that Blu Ray is Sony. There are 18 Board member of Blu Ray,
Apple Inc.
Dell Inc.
Hewlett-Packard Company
Hitachi, Ltd.
LG Electronics
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic (Matsushita Electric)
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics
Samsung Electronics
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
Sun Microsystems
TDK Corporation
Thomson SA
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.

I aint watchin no movie with those fans whining either. By the end of the year I am pretty sure we will £100 players which will not suck electric like Jude Law in AI.

I see a blue-ray addon in the near future, but not built into the system until further down the road, if that even happens.

Yeah, why waste this on the current system. Save it for the 360 replacement in 2-4 years, when it will release in advance of anything Sony can release because they put themselves so far in the hole with the current PS3 that they will either have to stick with it or cut their losses at the expensive of their pride.

A Blu add-on for the 360 would be fine with me. But in all likelihood, is Sony ready to allow their main gaming competitor to release a potential Profile 2.0 player that would undercut their own PS3, the "lowest" and futureproof Blu player currently on the market?

I'll just copy-pasta this from my comment on NihonTiger's similar blog:

For once, I'm going to defy Ron Workman. Microsoft will do this. Maybe not this year, maybe not even for the 360, but Microsoft WILL go Blu-Ray, provided that BRD continues to sell and its sales improve. If MS doesn't, then they will eventually be left in the dust, similar to how Nintendo currently is, technologically speaking, inferior in the hardware department. The next generation (not the current gen, the literal "next") will demand HD discs.

Why do they need this? Still, it's a good way to help kill the need to have a PS3 since not only will the 360 have the most games, and certainly far more better games than the PS3, but it will also have about the only reason people buy a PS3, a Blu-Ray drive. So why would people bother buying a PS3? I'm still trying to justify buying my one since it's been a big disappointment, but I keep it merely for the Blu-Ray player.

There will be a Blu-Ray player for the 360. There will never be a 360 with a built in Blu-Ray drive. Only the most self-indulgent, lazy coders could ever fill up a Blu-Ray disc, or have the need for more than 9GB, and microsoft knows it's customers want an HD movie solution. Turns out the only HD movie solution is Blu-Ray, which microsoft will undoubtedly support in Windows, and will most certainly pay the hardware licensing fees to release a Blu-Ray add-on. Sony makes more money from drives and discs, Microsoft makes money selling addon boxes, everyone wins. I still think that there's no solid reason to have a 20+ GB optical storage solution. By the time that's necessary, 20GB of flash memory will be cheap as all get out and load approximately 300,000x faster.

Built in Blu Ray drive is feasible. I think people here dont realize that a blu ray drive can play DVD9 at good enough speeds, the problem comes when using the blu ray read mode. Funny enough cross platform games for PS3 could have no load issues in Sony was to allow developers to avoid the Blu Ray format when they didn't need it, protection-wise this is an issue though for Sony and they would rather not admit that most games could be BETTER on a standard DVD. Silly.

No, no it isn't. They just cost too fucking much. Even if M$ was able to get a "deal" on blu-ray drives for $100 a piece, that's compared to a standard DVD-ROM for probably less than a fifth of that. Technically, it's more than feasible. Economically, it would be suicidally stupid.
