Never have to charge your DS again with solar mod photo

I'm not the type to mod my consoles, but if you are and you tire of always having to go hunting to find the charger to get your DS back up to speed, we may have the answer for you. While browsing The Awesomer this morning I stumbled across this ingenious little mod over at Instructables, you can alter your DS to charge using delicious, natural sunlight.

With a few solar cells, two diodes, wire and some scotch tape you can be rolling charge free in no time (well, assuming you don't mind leaving the DS on a windowsill to charge).I never play mine outside because of the glare, but I'm guessing this could be useful to some of you regardless. What's the coolest DS mod you've ever seen?

The person who made this failed hard for not having either Boktai game in the GBA slot.

...though that wouldn't stop me from shouting "TAIYOHHHHHHHH!" when I'm outside with my DS...

Eh, this wouldn't do me much good in the dead of Midwest Winter™. Still gets an A for effort, though.

...Okay, an A- for use of scotch tape. You leave that shit on your system too long, and it'll leave a memento behind.

@sammich

Sun peeks through clouds. It's UV rays that do the charging, so it would work on a cloudy day, just not as effectively as direct sunlight.

If I were to set this up, I'd make some sorta "charging" station to keep this from being a full system mod. I'd been wanting something like this anyway for my ipod.

How would it work outside? you hold the DS with the screens up and the bottom on the bottom? unless you play upside down there's no way you can play and charge it outside. Still, that's pretty sweet.

I'm not sure how much this is worth the purchase for me. I live in the Pacific Northwest. We've all but forgotten what the sun looks like here.

@Dimly: Glare would be the least of your problems if you're willing to play IN the sun.

That's nothing new. Tom's Hardware made a solar-powered DS March 2007

Don't really see much use for it, the only times my DS battery runs low is during super long travels.

Reminds me of hunting for Sun here in good ol' Blighty to play Boktai. Good times, good times.
