EA's Army of Two is not a game one might expect to court controversial subjects with any degree of class and grace. It's a big, dumb action game with two meatheaded mercenaries that drown in their own testosterone. That said, the latest trailer for the game is making a bit of a murmur due to the fact that it opens with a scene from the 9/11 twin tower attacks. As the first scene begins, we see the Twin Towers smoking on a television screen before the two main characters are shown reacting to the event that changes the course of history.
The trailer is shown above for your own viewing pleasure and shows off a little of the two main characters. I personally thought that Army of Two would feature a pair of nondescript, customizable mercs whose personalities would come from the player via headset, so I'm disappointed to see them with their own characters (a rarity for me). It's still got potential to be a good game from a company that's clearly doing its best to show it isn't just a Madden factory. Displaying a sense of maturity in its understated showing of the 9/11 attacks is a good sign, in my opinion.
I now wait for some idiot to discover this trailer and scream about it being offensive, because Heaven forbid a videogame has the audacity to try and show world events on the same level that television and film can.

Meet the rest of the team
That trailer made me want that game even more so than before. I like the mature stance and the complete and utter badass-ness of the two characters. I'm gonna have so much fun playin' this in co-op with my roommate. Nothing says win like a gold-plated diamond encrusted AK-47 in my eyes.
Cool trailer, and the TV thing was entirely tasteful, I don't know what anybody would have to complain about. They WILL, but just for the record, you know.
It was neat, generic just how I expected it to be.
Did anyone notice when they were getting off the jeep the video seemed to lack some frames? Was that from realtime footage or pre-rendered engine video?
Hey, were moving slowly from Meh to Want! How nice to see. I was hoping this game would shape up into something cool looking. Even if the gameplay isn't perfect. Nice logos too EA.
I'm glad to see they took the early criticism of its tone seriously. It has gone from a generic game about trash-talking "buddies" that hate each other while shooting bad guys for profit, to the OddCouple with guns working for something we have a vested interest in (whether fabricated or not).
I don't see any real commentary in the trailer (and chances are slim to none there'll be any in the game,) in fact it looks like this game goes down in the exact same way the war did in real life - U.S. is attacked then jumps to war without a second thought - and that's really stupid.
Mercenaries kick ass. When I found out Mercenaries 2 was delayed I tried to kill myself. But then I saw this game and I wanted to live. I'm sure some hot mercenary action from Army of Two will hold me over for a while.
Here's my problem with Army of Two; everytime I see one of the trailers, I get a tingle down my neck. I remember flipping my collective shit the first time I saw the "Military Industrial Complex" speech trailer.
The problem is, everything I've seen regarding actual in-game has left me sort of... bleh. The gun battles don't look all that hot, much of the control appears to be clunky, and there's freakin' GLOWS on people. I hold out judgment until I play it, but I'm not chomping at the bit like I once was. I guess that's a by-product of being produced by EA; exceptional production values hampered an overarching sense of dread.
Now, on the other hand... Kane & Lynch I'm rooting for. I love me some IO interactive, and they've yet to let me down.
Hey, it's about time somebody had the balls to make a game about killing the terrorists responsible for 9/11.* Well, other than that other one, with the Kung Fu fight with Bin Laden.
Anyway, I expect that complaints from certain self-proclaimed civil rights groups might get this game toned down. Hell, those two mercs might drop down in Afghanistan only to find themselves facing off against... Neo-Nazis?!?
* For all the people with tin foil hats and who believe fire can't melt steel, I'm referring to Al Qaeda.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It takes a bit more maturity, and hopefully the final game will have enough to justify it.
Good looking trailer though.

Generic Linear Shooter XX.
This is going to be so average that mediocre does not do it justice.

Disgusting.
I went from 0 to 60 during the course of that trailer.
Weird. Affected by advertising.
