Netflix wants Netflix on PS3 and Wii photo

Netflix wants Netflix on every device, including consoles not-named-Xbox 360. In a recent interview with Reuters, CEO Reed Hastings talked big about wanting the rental service “on all game consoles,” despite having an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft. “Eventually, we want to be on all game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs,” said Hastings. “So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts.”

“Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that,” he said.

It’s not over PS3 and Wii owners. No need to push those platform-specific surveys or casually-dropped hints out of mind quite yet. Netflix seems set on plopping their service onto other platforms.

Netflix is already on PS3 if you have PlayOn. I guess it requires you to also have a PC on the same network, but that's not really a problem since that's what I'm posting this comment from.

I wonder how much Microsoft paid Netflix to compensate for the loss of not earning money from the service on PS3 and Wii. I mean, they would earn a LOT from 2 extra consoles, can't be cheap for Microsoft to match that.

It's really crazy when a company denies it's self what it wants because some bully like microshaft forces them into and exclusivity deal.

Capitalism eh, forcing us do things we don't want to since the invention of money.

Microsoft will be able to keep buying out Netflix to remain exclusive for a year or two more. By then microsoft and nintendo will come out with plans for a new console.

So they want it on every console but sign an exclusivity deal that in turn caused sony to create their own video services and diminish demand for their product ????
(Nintendo didn't seem to care either way)

It's a free service to Netflix subscribers, where you can watch SOME movies and television shows through your console. I've used it a bit on my Xbox360. But it doesn't seem to have the very latest top-notch blockbusters that they offer on Blue-ray and DVD.

I guess I'd rather see my PS3 get cross-game-home voice chat.

@Sexualchocolate: I don't think you quite understand how capitalism works.

This should have been done right from the beginning.

Netflix, that's one of many things not available outside North America. Yay.

@ Obirano

For real.

They shouldn't complain when THEY were the ones who agreed to the deal.

Blockheads.

The CEO simply said he would eventually like full support of Netflix on all potentially compatible devices. "Eventually" is a very arbitrary time frame, so I think some fanciful leaps have been made to conclude that PS3 and Wii will be receiving Netflix.

Yeah, paid-for exclusives suck, but Microsoft aren't the first and won't be the last to implement them. Netflix always had the choice not to sign the deal, and I'm sure they were rewarded handsomely for doing so.

Sounds like this:

Microsoft: "Here's a contract and some money."
Netflix: "Fuck yeah money!" *contract signed*
...
...
...
Netflix: "Hey wait a second, we could've made more money..."
Netflix: "Fuck!"

lol @ people blaming Microsoft for this. Did they rape your dog and fuck your mom too? Get the fuck over it. They have a great console and they've taken the right steps to ensure success. Netflix is the one to blame, if anyone. Fuck.

"fuck you M$ and your paid exclusives"

how do you think any company secures exclusives in any industry? Maybe sometimes it's not paid for in cash but it is always, always about the greenbacks in the end.

this is the kind of crap I don't understand when people say that 360 owners are less hostile than ps3 owners:
look @ Your Moms Hot Lover, craigbezzle and I am sure more to come below me-

the thing is that consumers just don't like exclusives unless they are fanboys or rich.
all of us that are neither don't care what's on the other console as long as we have the opportunity to use it on ours- sorry if that makes me "bitching and moaning"

Can't blame no one. Microsoft is looking for their best interests and Netflix looked for its best interest back when they signed. Now I hope Sony looks for their bests interest and makes a deal with Hulu and other services for watching unlimited videos for a small fee. I watch netflix from my friends xbox, and dough it is nice, they don't have the latest good movies which are already released, so I hope someone comes with something better and puts it on the PS3. Watching movies without the fear of getting a RROD is priceless.

The Netflix thing would be a nonissue if Sony would offer a similar service. They've got all kinds of movies and shows up on PSN, they're just not priced competitively.

Nice job shooting yourself in the foot Netflix. They didn't think about this before getting on board with Microsoft?

@whoremongr no part of my comment was hostile. You are reading the hostile into it my friend. What constantly amazes me is people's acting like MS and Sony or any company should care about them. They do what they do to make money for their shareholders. A few individuals working at those companies might care about games and gaming but as an institution it is always going to be about money.
