Netflix to test and prototype streaming on other platforms photo

Netflix is interested in bring their streaming experience to consoles not named the Xbox 360. A recent job listing for an “Engineering Leader” for the company’s “gaming platforms team” spilled the beans on Netflix’s plans for console domination.

According to the posting, the gaming platforms team is responsible “for prototyping, testing and building the Netflix experience for gaming consoles.” And the aptly named Engineering Leader will be the person that steers that ship with his or her intimate experience with console development.

“We seek deep experience developing and testing media rich applications on current generation gaming consoles,” the listing reads. “Expect to help build a small technology team to rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms.”

Netflix on every console sounds great if you don’t have access to a 360. But there’s one big, glaring problem with Netflix’s streaming thing in general: There are only four seasons of The Office available on the service. What else is there to watch?

This is excellent. Now I don't have to pay a ridiculous $50 more a year just to watch the Office. Because, yes. That is the only thing I watched on there.

If they decide to bring it to the PS3 I'll give it a go. I had netflix a while back, but canceled it because we weren't really watching movies that much. These days, if there's a movie we want to see, we use "On Demand" from our satellite and if it isn't available on that, we get it off the PSN video store, which has a surprisingly large selection.

If it isn't On Demand or on PSN we drive up to the local video store and grab it.

I did like Netflix's streaming movie service, but I only got to try it on the pc, my 360 had redringed twice and I had to end our relationship before I got the chance to even try Netflix on it.

A question to those who use the service on the 360: Do they still restrict the number of hours you can stream? Back when I had the streaming on PC (when the service first came out), you could only stream a set number of hours based on your subscription. Do they still do that? What are the restrictions?

Do people really have the urge to instantaneously watching streaming movies? Can't they wait?

I like it on my 360. It's a great way to watch movies I wouldn't ever consider buying on Blu Ray, and to catch up on shows that aren't going to be on Blu Ray any time soon.

I don't watch movies often enough to pay for netflicks but some of my friends have it so theres some potential use. Also that's one less thing the xbox will have going for it and that's good as far as i'm concerned.

My mother had a subscription to Netflix, which they used constantly to get three DVDs at a time, but barely used their streaming capabilities. When they released the NXE, I was able to associate my 360 with her account so I had access to dozens of seasons of decent shows, and about 80 decent movies.

Now that my mother has canceled the service, I really do miss having the ability to select any of those ~150 seasons or movies in my queue.

@necrosen - There might be limitations to the 1-DVD-at-a-time subscription plan, but anything above that has unlimited streaming capabilities.

They have 30 Rock, Weeds, Dead Like Me, A Clockwork Orange, Unforgiven and a ton of b-horror movies. If you're only watching The Office you're missing out. I just watch on my laptop, along with the dvds they send. If they could get this on Wii that'd be pretty sweet though.

My girlfriend has a Netflix account and I use hers to stream movies to my 360. It works well enough, but the selection is pretty meh. That image lies, Team America cannot stream as far as I know. My brother and I wanted to watch it :(

The movies that can stream change every month.

@necrosen

I have the 1 DVD unlimited plan, and I can stream as much as I want.

Adding to that, you have to have an unlimited DVD plan. The plans with a maximum limit of DVDs do not include unlimited streaming that I'm aware of. I have the same plan as ashtar and yes, it has unlimited streaming.

Sounds awesome to me. Would love to have more reasons to rid my living room of one more machine and move my 360 to my office.

The lowest tier plan that has unlimited streaming is around $8 a month (1 DVD at a time). Besides the Office, there's a ton of great documentaries, BBC programing, and all the movies on Starz.

I've done some Netflix streaming over my 360 and I have to say that the quality is pretty damned good! I haven't done HD yet, but I was actually surprised by how good the quality was for SD content. It's no surprise that they're looking to go to the PS3 and Wii (especially now that the Wii supports SD/SDHC cards to allow for stream buffering).
