Netflix PS3 discs hitting homes as early as Friday photo

According to a round of notifications, the circular keys needed to run Netflix on PS3s are on the way to homes across North America, some coming as early as Friday.

Earlier this afternoon, Netflix blasted several alert e-mails to those who signed up to receive the discs which enables the service to work over the PS3. We received a few, and a reader or two have as well, which makes this confirmed.

As announced moons ago, these blu-ray babies spin in the disc drive and make Netflix’s Instant Streaming service possible on the PS3. As we understand it, this is an initial thing -- a program perhaps similar to the one available to Xbox 360 LIVE Gold members may or may not hit in the future. We’ll have to see about that one.

Netflix on PS3: how many movies are you guys going to stream tomorrow?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

I got the email, but like I stated in Freetouch's blog, I'm a little wary of having the drive spin while the movie streams from the 'net.

Still, it is exciting though. Maybe it'll be more quiet than the 360's streaming?

I got the email too. I'll probably at least check it out, although it kind of stinks that you need the disc. Supposedly that won't always be the case from what I've heard

Is it for sure you'll be able to use it as soon as the disc gets to you?

I'm thinking all the disc does is access the streaming infrastructure that Netflix already has in place, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use it right away.

I think just the disc to load it up, doubt it spins the whole time, mine is coming tomorrow!

Assuming this works as well as the 360's streaming, I may be ditching my Gold account as soon as it expires. The reasons for me to keep it are swiftly becoming fewer.

Remeber, one the microsoft exclusivity agreement runs out sometime next year, there should be a XMB app for ps3.

How do they fit all those movies on one disc. Blurayz are truly amazing.

FYI - Most BD Live apps download a cache file onto the PS3 HDD. The disc probably loads the application and then after the cursory disk check it runs out of the install in the BD Live folders. BD Live data stays install until you delete it so it's probably only going to need to go through this routine once.

If they can make downloadable games like Burnout Paradise, why can't this just be downloaded and run like an ISO?

@tolietduck

It's a way for them to get around the microsoft exclusivity agreement. They said next year sometime they'll have it as a download.

I wonder how many new subscribers Netflix gained from being on PS3 vs how many people were already users but are hoping it is as good as the 360 version so they can drop gold. I am a new subscriber and I am really enjoying the service so far. I hope the PS3 implementation is good.

This is a cool idea; however, I have not heard of anything in Canada about Netflix.

Does this exist in Canada???

I really dig Netflix. I just wish they carried games too. It would be great to handle all my discs and streaming through a single company.

I don't get why they have programmed it to go onto a bluray disc, and not through PSN. I will have to research this penomena.
