Netflix on Sony TVs, but not PS3? photo

Sony and Netflix have partnered up to piss gamers off bring innovation to their Bravia television line. Under this new deal, Netflix subscribers will be able to stream video content to new Netflix-enabled sets this fall.

"Sony has been a world leader in consumer electronics for decades," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, in a statement. "We are proud to include Sony Electronics among our CE partners who continue to provide new and exciting ways for Netflix members to instantly watch movies and TV episodes in their living rooms on their TVs."

That's great, but what about my Sony PlayStation 3? Would that make too much sense? A ready-to-go user base has everything that's needed, Sony and Netflix. All you need to do is flip on the switch! What's holding you up?

Joystiq points out that a timed exclusive with Microsoft may be the case here. In Sony's statement to Joystiq, they say that they have nothing to announce on any partnership at this time. So maybe we'll just have to wait a bit. Or watch it on our Xbox 360s and Bravia TVs.

What if I was to watch netflix from my 360 on a bravia tv?

Would the world implode?

As always Microshaft has PAID Netflix to NOT allow it on PS3's.

Fucking underhanded cocksucking commercial terrorists.

The Xbox isn't better than the PS3, Microsoft has just paid everyone to fuck the PS3 over at every turn. This should not be allowed in a "free market" such as ours. The authorities really should look at these "exclusivity deals," there should be rules about this kind of shit.

Microshaft have many year experience of "buying" problems for their competitors, despite fines and charges in the past they continue with their unfair business practices.

Hang on, after that rant, do we even get Netflix in the UK?

Well, clam down sexchoc, as much as you're right, you can still get netflix streamed to your PS3 through Playon (google it), the trail is free, so you can test it out. I've been using this for months, bought the licence (one time fee of 30 bucks), and then of course a netflix subscription, and it will stream everything to your ps3 that can be added to instant queue (same as xbox). While its not an official release, it does everything the 360 does.

No.

Though Lovefilm are starting up a similar sort of thing with a lot less content. Be good to see console support for it.

@funran - Dude, thanks for the info, I had no idea there was software that could allow you to stream netflix to your ps3. so is playon installed on your ps3, or do you install it on an vista machine with media server capabilities? Also, when you queue a movie up on netflix, you just add it to your "Watch Instantly" queue? Or do you choose the "Instantly to your TV" tab?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm at work, so I can't try it out until I get home, and it will be late so I don't want to have to spend 3 hours trying to figure it out.

so sony have shot themselves in the foot and just made the 360 netflix the cheaper of the two options here. their feet must have a lot of holes over the past 2 weeks.

"Joystiq points out that a timed exclusive with Microsoft may be the case here. "

o that's joystiq. they even posted that "lost and damned" and the other episode were timed-exclusive as well matter of factly to then show their bluff.

when was their mention of an exclusivity deal in the first place?

does it matter, doesn't the ps3 already have a video service, would'nt two be redundant ( I'm saying this as a person who doesn't use either netflix nor the ps3s video service........except for the free episode of voltron they gave me).

@Brain - yeah, no kidding. I didn't even know what a PC was until Chronic's educated, and most certainly NOT, 360 fanboyish comment.

But yes, I already stream them from my laptop, but it would be way more convenient to use my PS3 either through netflix directly, or by using this playon service.

@Black Nexus- the ps3 video service costs money for each download. So if you're already paying for a netflix subscription, downloading a movie on the ps3 is like paying for something you already own. The only benefit is that it's instant gratification on the PS3, whereas with netflix, you have to wait for the video to arrive.
