Netflix movie sharing cut from New Xbox Experience photo

While I'm not keen on everything Microsoft is doing with the New Xbox Experience (NXE), I am really looking forward to the Netflix streaming video. Sadly, it's just become a little bit less awesome now that Shacknews is reporting that a planned movie sharing feature will not be implemented in the update which hits consoles on November 19th.

One of the main features Microsoft has been touting is a more community-based atmosphere, where players can meet up with each other in a virtual room and interact together in various ways. One of the activities planned was to allow up to eight users to all watch the same streaming movie simultaneously, like meeting up in someone's living room.

The other shared media aspect, photo sharing, will still be available when the dashboard update releases. And don't rule out the movie sharing entirely. Microsoft claims that they will still be delivering the feature at some point, suggesting that NXE is intended to be a more dynamic system of improvements instead of the biannual dump they've delivered in the past.

It's a little lame that I won't be able to watch the most recent episode of Heroes the night after it airs with friends who might not be able to hang out in person for it but this isn't really a major setback or anything. After all, we'll always have ShiMuNi.

I'm not feeling comfortable with NXE yet. Watching streaming video with friends online still is a nice feature, but it doesn't fill me up enough. Anyway, I'll have to install it in my Xbox though.

For a second there I thought you were talking about having no Netflix streaming movies on your 360 at all! I don't really care about this feature...I don't want to talk during movies or shows most of the time, anyway.

Wasn't this supposed to be a huge angle of the 360...you can watch Netflix?

I'm cautious...

Ok, I'm sorry, that post says nothing about the Netflix service. It is all about sharing photos and videos that already exist on your hard drive with other people.

This is the third site now that has reported this news, stating something isn't there because of a statement that something else that is slightly similar but not related isn't there. Is there an actual quote somewhere from Microsoft that says "No, you can not watch Netflix videos in a party with your friends who also have Netflix" because I sure haven't seen it...

Well thats ok. At least for me, It's hard enough to find the time to sit down for a movie, let alone coordinate a streaming movie with friends and hope that it streams properly for everyone.

At least it seems like they will still have single Netflix stream support.

At least you are getting Netflix in America, in the UK we will not be getting Netflix or any video streaming service at all.

I like the fact that Netflix is coming to Xbox Live since I already have a membership but the fact that you could watch movies with friends was not an option I was looking forward too. I just don't see the applicaton of it since the only time you will watch something with friends is when they live near you and it becomes a social event. The anonymity of the internet will do nothing but ruin that experience.

Can I stream shit from my Windows PC to my xbox and then over Live to other people?

If so, then this news doesn't matter.
There are more pirates than netflix subscribers right?

@falinter: Doubtful. From what I've been able to gather, all of the video sharing capability has been omitted from the update.

@brainderailment: I'm thinking it's either the movie studios or Netflix deciding they can't do it.

I wasn't really going to use this feature, but still sucks it's not there. Although I still don't believe people choose to use their 360 to watch movies. I still find that weird.

Well fuck. I was really looking forward to this because my gf has Netflix and we live a bit apart. Guess we'll just have to keep playing GTA4 to get xbl together time.

Well it's not like we would see any of this anyway in Europe... hell I don't think many people have even heard of Netflix over here

That's bullshit. The one feature that amped me up for NXE update isn't being implemented then. This is balls. Fuck this update, I officially don't give two shits about it.

Way to misread the title, Clockwork. Read the article before you comment.

@Blindisdedork: You still can. You just can't have other users watch the same movie you rented (hence the sharing). Which is fine by me. I wasn't down with it unless I could charge those dirty freeloaders virtual tickets anyway. Fuckers.

I think people still feel you can watch anything available from Netflix on the 360, but its only the content they have on their streaming service. Yeah, its a lot of stuff, but most of it is old crap. However, it looks like its improving ... some recent content has been added over the last few weeks. Still looking forward to it.
