Netflix Instant Watch coming to PS3 via third-party program photo

If any PS3 owners were feeling a little jealous of the 360 getting access to the Netflix library of streaming video, this might perk them up a bit. PlayOn is a program which allows for viewing several forms of streaming web content (such as Hulu, CBS.com and YouTube) through a PC on to PS3 and 360 consoles. On Wednesday, the developer released an update which adds Netflix to their list of compatible services.

The program is currently in beta so there will, no doubt, be some bugs. If you'd like to check it out, however, the program will be free during the test period. Afterwards, PlayOn will run you $30 if you want to buy the software. All things considered, that's a pretty small price to pay for those of us who'd like to watch movies from the comfort of a couch without need for a computer in the room.

The PlayOn website has experienced some downtime, likely due to the Netflix announcement, which is causing some problems with signing up for the beta. The devs say they're working to get everything up and running, so keep checking. This sounds pretty damn cool and I might consider getting it to use on my 360 regardless of the native Netflix on the way.

I've used the beta and I have to say it is very disappointing. Anytime Hulu or any of the sites makes changes to its API it renders the software useless. Likewise, I was seeing a lot of studdering of the video stream, despite being on a quick broadband connection, with 902.11g wireless and using a high-end PC with a quad-core processor. Not to mention their customer support is really useless, given the fact that they want you to pay $30 for the program.

Maybe I just had a bad experience, but considering the software is priced at 15% of the total cost of an Xbox 360 Arcade model, you're probably better off just going the whole hog and buy another console.

Didn't the Slingbox people already make a unit that does this? And in HD...over great distances...?

I've been using this for a while, and am downloading the update now... even before netflix, I've been watching a lot of the movies they have on it for free...

I think that is through CBS. They have a bunch of CBS shows and such, and they seem to work a lot better/lag less/have more selection than the hulu portal.

I still watch the hulu a lot as well. Basically it's like getting cable without a monthly fee, and the netflix just seals the deal. Hopefully it will work well, I'll report back on it after I watch a few movies!

I've been using the beta since it came out, and it seemed to have worked much better when it first was launched. Hulu hasn't worked for weeks, CBS has always been spotty, Netflix never worked for me, and lately I can't even get the 360 to find the PlayOn server at all. I've tried disabling all my antivirus/firewall software and reinstalling the software, and I've sent in multiple support tickets; nothing seems to work.

I'm sure it's eventually going to be a great program and from what I've seen will be worth $30 when everything is fixed, but right now it's really fubar.

It's been working fine for me - I downloaded the update, added some movies to my netflix instant queue, and am watching "Letters from Iwo Jima" right now. The selection isn't as good as normal netflix, but it does have a LOT of movies available.

One thing that I did notice was that when they released a new update, you had to uninstall the old software, then reinstall the new update package, otherwise it would stop working.
