Netflix Instant Watch coming to PS3 in November photo

Color this PS3 owner surprised: after more than 11 months of Xbox 360 exclusivity, Netflix will be making its way to the PlayStation 3 next month. We’ve heard this rumor many times before, with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings only saying that they eventually “want to be on all game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs.” But now, Sony has officially announced on the PlayStation.Blog that this is finally happening: starting this November, PS3 owners who have Netflix accounts will be able to stream “thousands of movies and TV episodes” right from their consoles.

Of note is the press release (after the jump), which mentions something curious: you can head over to netflix.com/ps3 right now to sign up to be notified when the service is available, and to reserve a free “instant streaming disc.” That’s right: at least “initially,” Netflix on PS3 will require a Blu-ray Disc to be in the PS3 in order to stream content. Destructoid tipster Adam Dork informed me that Netflix on the 360 requires syncing a console with a code, so maybe that’s what this disc is doing.

In any case, Netflix users will be able to set up their Instant Watch queues on their computers or on their PS3s, but of course, 360 owners can still tout the 1080p streaming functionality that the Zune Video Marketplace will soon bring to the 360. The timing of this probably isn’t a coincidence -- my guess is that, with Netflix coming to the PS3 sometime next month, Microsoft had a one-year exclusivity contract with Netflix (the service went live on the 360 on November 19, 2008, so that might give you an idea of when to expect it to hit the PS3).

If you’re a PS3 owner looking to open up a Netflix account, the minimum monthly plan that allows for Instant Watch costs $8.99 a month. That’s not bad -- especially when you don’t need a fifty-dollar-a-year Xbox Live Gold account in addition to it.

COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

Now even more people will be able to enjoy The Office on-demand. The world will be a better place :-)

I cancelled my Netflix subscription a few months ago because I started just outright buying DVDs again, but it was pretty handy to be able to hop on my 360 for a quick movie from time to time. Maybe this will finally force Microsoft to allow non-gold members to access Netflix? I don't mind paying for gold membership, but requiring that on top of the regular Netflix fee will be even less attractive after this news.

My favorite part is how you don't need a gold account to get this, which means more business for Netflix, and an increased streaming library. It can only get better from here, folks!

Wasn't Netflix for 360 just about to expand to other countries as well? Europe and Scandinavia, hope PS3 Netflix allows the same thing.

This would be a good thing if I was American, like how Hulu would be a good thing if I was American.

This sort of thing depresses me, really.

You need to have a Gold account on the 360 to use Netflix? A totally different service with separate subscription fees?

...My God, what's wrong with Microsoft?

You are aware that the 1080p streaming movies the 360 will soon offer is a completely separate service from Netflix? They part of the Zune HD marketplace, or whatever the official name is, and cost money above and beyond your Netflix and Live subscriptions.

$8.99 a month unlimited rentals DVD ang blu ray. Plus you can stream movies and tv shows, the selection if stuff to stream doesn't have alot of new stuff but there's enough there that you'll find something that interests you. New releases you just order on disc. It's good a service, i'm sur ps3 owners will enjoy it.

@KwikPwn: Actually, from what I understand, Netflix charges an extra $2 a month for Blu-rays, so it'd be $10.99.

my gold account is about to expire next month. and im not even planning to activate it again. i dont use it that much anymore, my 360 is collecting dust. Im even buying modern warfare 2 on my ps3. and adding netflix on ps3 without paying the additional 50 bux a year gives me another reason to just let my 360 become ps2. sorry microsoft, your console was great while it lasted. i dont even care aout zune HD, since i have 3 ipods and an iphone.

If the PS3 getting Netflix would end the console wars then this generation of games must suck. I've been playing Netflix on my PS3 for a while (and Hulu, and AdultSwim, etc - thanks PlayOn!)

Honestly, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, whatever you throw out it is all just fluff.

Give me the games.

Games that run well, games that look pretty good, games that are fun.

Shame this won't come to the UK. But lovefilm send me plenty of tasty blu-rays anyway, and we do get PlayTV over here too.

I'm hoping that the PSN video store is still on it's way to us too?! From what I see the PSN video store looks pretty awesome, not sure why you'd need Netflix too.

So the 360 is getting HD video content, wow, the service that PSN has had for years. Jolly good show trying to catch up MS.

Btw, guarantee Microsoft will now stop advertising Netflix =D

Also... will it be free for PS3 owners (bar subscription). On 360 you have to be a GOLD member.

Sweet, it'll be nice to get the service on another console. Though I've got to wonder why a streaming disc is needed when other pieces of hardware need only a code to sync with your account. Still, that'll be a useless question in the face of more movies for less money.

I had a gold account for Netflix streaming. I just factored the $4/month into the Netflix cost, bringing it up to about $12.90/month. I use the service enough that's it's wroth it. But I JUST renewed by gold membership for another month. DAMN.
