Destructoid only aims to run this story as a public service. While the rest of the world is blu in the face from arguing about their HD format preferences, we continue to frag, level grind, and dominate leaderboards.
When you do stop gaming to click your Netflix picks, you'll only have Blu-ray titles listed as choices for high definition movies. The online movie rental service has just announced that they will phase out HD DVD movies, and the format will be dropped completely by the end of the year.
"We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
"Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly. These factors could well lead to another decade of disc-based movie watching as the consumer's preferred means."
Wouldn't you love to have read this news before picking up a price-dropped Xbox 360 HD DVD player last week? You didn't, did you?
While some of us may never look at our PS3s as movie players, it's good to know that some may eventually find value in its playback capability as the Blu-ray format gains popularity and support.
Do you think Toshiba and the few HD DVD format supporters are on their way to giving up? Do you care?

Plus I always thought it was stupid that HD would make Combo discs of a regular DVD/HD movie and then charge 5-10 dollars more because of it.
@HarassmentPanda
I don't think anyone expects you to just throw out your HD-DVD movies becuase the format is dying/dead. That baby will be an antique and you will be telling your grandchildren about the great format war!
They're basically identical now. There's a few extra features that HD DVD has, but those features are negligible in terms of actual movie presentation. If you want to be able to surf the web while watching your movie, I guess it's swell, but I could care less about the perks of HD DVD's technology and more about picture quality (which is identical on both.)
Besides, in like two years there will be some new format to come out and make all this obsolete and everyone will again have to buy new players and discs.
I gotta say though, HDDVD sounds better. "Hey, I've got like 100 action DVDs" or "Hey, I've got like 100 action HD-DVDs" or "Hey, I've got like 100 action Blu-Rays". Sorry, blu-ray sounds gay.
Yawn. More BS about the format war being more of a detriment to hi-def growth than the mainstream simply not caring about hi-def movies.
The mainstream evidently does care about hi-def sports and nature shows (look at Planet Earth's legs), but not movies.
Dissing technology based on a name is gay.
Also, owning 100 action movies is a beard if I've ever seen one.
And I'm not getting into your other point, because it's hard to explain stuff like that to retards.
Grim if you give up your Xbox, I promise I'll wait at least a month to attempt to beat your high scores.
Have I ever told you how fantastic your avatar is? Because it is.
It really is amusing to see the former HD-DVD supporters state their sudden apathy about the whole 'format war'.
For a game rental subscription I'm not really thrilled to have gamefly and blockbuster to choose from.
And downloadable movies is not the way of the future, dont know why people honestly think that.
