Netflix goes Blu-ray only, gamers continue gaming photo

Destructoid only aims to run this story as a public service. While the rest of the world is blu in the face from arguing about their HD format preferences, we continue to frag, level grind, and dominate leaderboards.

When you do stop gaming to click your Netflix picks, you'll only have Blu-ray titles listed as choices for high definition movies. The online movie rental service has just announced that they will phase out HD DVD movies, and the format will be dropped completely by the end of the year.

"We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

"Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly. These factors could well lead to another decade of disc-based movie watching as the consumer's preferred means."

Wouldn't you love to have read this news before picking up a price-dropped Xbox 360 HD DVD player last week? You didn't, did you?

While some of us may never look at our PS3s as movie players, it's good to know that some may eventually find value in its playback capability as the Blu-ray format gains popularity and support.

Do you think Toshiba and the few HD DVD format supporters are on their way to giving up? Do you care?

What the hell kind of name is "Movie Lover"? I bet there are quite a lot of weirdos in "Anytown, USA".

Inevitable. Bought the 360 HD-DVD external about a year ago. Sucks that it is basically worthless, but I'll take it knowing that there is only ONE proprietary format once again. The HD war was getting ridiculous. And counter productive.

I'm pretty much convinced HD-DVD is dead, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it. I still prefer the HD-DVD format and as long as I have a working player, I'll still watch my HD-DVDs.

I play all my movies on the PS3 as well and LOVE IT. the PS3 is so much more quieter than the HD attachment for the 360. It does suck that we picked it up when it first came out but we did make a lot of use out of it so I don't feel like it was a waste and if anything it's an extra dvd player. I'm just glad we didn't buy too many HD movies.

Plus I always thought it was stupid that HD would make Combo discs of a regular DVD/HD movie and then charge 5-10 dollars more because of it.

I have a Blu-Ray player, but not a PS3, so this actually makes me very happy. It was just a matter of waiting. I love my Samsung Blu-Ray player and I never doubted things would go in this direction.

Good new for people teetering between the 2, now we can buy safely.

@HarassmentPanda

I don't think anyone expects you to just throw out your HD-DVD movies becuase the format is dying/dead. That baby will be an antique and you will be telling your grandchildren about the great format war!

I love me my HD DVD add-on. This is a sad day. Inevitable, but still sad, nonetheless.

I never bothered to read about the technical specs of the two formats, but I'm sure that if I had, I woulda cared.

Well considering my HD-DVD player add on to the 360 was a gift, I can't be too upset, but this end was inevitable.

They're basically identical now. There's a few extra features that HD DVD has, but those features are negligible in terms of actual movie presentation. If you want to be able to surf the web while watching your movie, I guess it's swell, but I could care less about the perks of HD DVD's technology and more about picture quality (which is identical on both.)

Don't care. Don't have HD tv yet.

Besides, in like two years there will be some new format to come out and make all this obsolete and everyone will again have to buy new players and discs.

I gotta say though, HDDVD sounds better. "Hey, I've got like 100 action DVDs" or "Hey, I've got like 100 action HD-DVDs" or "Hey, I've got like 100 action Blu-Rays". Sorry, blu-ray sounds gay.

This is just a pain in the ass now. Netflix was one of my primary ways to watch HD DVDs. If only I had a PS3.

"We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def,"

Yawn. More BS about the format war being more of a detriment to hi-def growth than the mainstream simply not caring about hi-def movies.

The mainstream evidently does care about hi-def sports and nature shows (look at Planet Earth's legs), but not movies.

@Digital

Dissing technology based on a name is gay.

Also, owning 100 action movies is a beard if I've ever seen one.

And I'm not getting into your other point, because it's hard to explain stuff like that to retards.

Grim if you give up your Xbox, I promise I'll wait at least a month to attempt to beat your high scores.

I have an HDTV and the only real HD use I get out of it is my 360. I've been waiting and waiting until a "winner" is declared in the format war. I'm glad it's blu-ray too, now I can justify buying myself a PS3.

I want neither. Gimmie downloads all the way, faster broadband and no physical media is the way forwards. Until this happens a good upscale DVD player will do me fine, I like no film enough to spend Blue Ray prices on it. The irony is that the mass public are watching downloaded less than standard def .

It really is amusing to see the former HD-DVD supporters state their sudden apathy about the whole 'format war'.

I'm kinda surprised the porn industry hasn't jumped on a USB BJ attachment. Netflix is a monster movie renter company and this is just another proverbial nail in the coffin for HD-DVD. For those looking to maybe expand your HD-DVD collection before it totally goes away Best Buy is running a buy one get one HD-DVD sale this week.

OK but when are they going to start renting games?

For a game rental subscription I'm not really thrilled to have gamefly and blockbuster to choose from.

It was inevitable for it to go this way with the studio backings. If you didnt see this coming, shame on you.

And downloadable movies is not the way of the future, dont know why people honestly think that.
