Netflix confirmed for Wii

Netflix confirmed for Wii photo

After the endless speculation, it has finally been confirmed that movie streaming service Netflix is coming to the Wii. Nintendo's system will now join the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in offering instant-access movies and television shows in HD ... oh, wait, not in HD.

Like the PS3, the Wii's Netflix service will require a free software disc in order to run the service. The Wii, of course, has no HD capabilities so it won't be able to compete with the Netflix services already provided by the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Still, since the majority of Wii owners are idiots, this version of Netflix will probably be amazing new technology to them.

There you have it, Netflix has finally come to the Wii and it will look slightly rubbish. At least we can finally stop hearing about this one.

For those with only a Wii, this is good news. I love Netflix on my 360. Between that and Hulu, I don't have cable. No HD is kind of a bummer, but the vast majority of content available for streaming is only available in SD anyways. But still, it's great being able to watch newer shows like Heroes, Lost, or 20 Rock in glorious HD on demand without commercials.

I wonder if there will eventually be a Netflix channel on the Wii, much like the PS3 disc is temporary.

30 Rock, rather. 20 Rock is similar, but 10 less funny.

It's not that big of a deal not having HD. I'd venture a guess that 80-90% of the content on Netflix instant watch is SD anyway.

I know that I rarely watch anything that's HD instant watch through my 360.

And the return of the blurry netflix image goes right over everyone's head.... again. Thanks for trolling Jim.

I only have a Wii and this is great news. I don't really need HD since I have my Wii connected to my tiny ass tv right now I'm used to watching 700MB Xvids anyway; DVD quality is all I need. Can't wait till it comes out

I agree with u guys, but as an owner of the beefier consoles ,its jarring to go to SD

The Wii is the only console hooked up on the old school SD TV in our living room, and, the quality for most everything I watch dips below HD anyway. My only problem is that, if the PS3 disc based system is any indication, the buffering will be shit...

But, still, cool announcement.

Well last time I checked people still buy DVD's and the Wii might not be in HD, but its still DVD quality. Either way its not like its a bad thing, because its a free feature in the first place. But as a Canadian I really couldn't care less what service NetFlix is on, because I can't get it on anything. I have a 360 and the movies selection sucks in the marketplace here in Canada. Plus we can't get Netflix, so I haven't watch a single movie in HD on my 360 yet and I probably won't anytime soon either!

Also as an owner of the beefier consoles, SD is fine, really.

Yup, yup, yup.

It's good to hear this. I feel like as long as Netflix is around this is going to become a new standard on home consoles which would be wicked.

Half of wii owners are morons? Great job once again for being a troll Jim. And just trying to get fans riled up to get more comments than everyone else.

Well I for one think this is a good thing. The Wii has up until now not had any baked in media playback beyond AAC and JPG's which is sooo 2001 it's not even funny.

Giving them a movie player is a step in the right direction for the continued relevance of the Wii since the game quality slid into the toilet sometime ago.

Hey and what's with the trolling Jim? I went straight to the original article and didn't see that.

C'mon Jim. I get sarcasm, I get funny douchebaggery, I even get trolling for lulz when it's directed to idiots. But calling Wii owners "idiots," and "this version of Netflix will probably be amazing new technology to them," is just being an asshole.

But then again the British are idiots.

He means all the 50+ year olds that have wii systems now - my grandmas nursing home has 3 nintendo wiis now and i highly doubt any of them care if its in HD or not

The vast majority of any console ownership are idiots. Have you not played on XBL with random people? The amount of idiots on there is staggering. Just listening to those people will lower your IQ by 10 points, LOL!

i bet this one move improves netflix stock more than any other single business development they have this year. and yes, jim, i'm sure that for most of the general public, this will be very new tech. but that's only because the 360 and ps3 don't matter in the least to the general public. as for the wii version not being able to compete, we'll see what system gets the most netflix use in the next few months. way to show your fanboy, jim.

yeah about the HD junkies, if you actually had brains you would go out and get the Blue ray cause it is going to be way more HD than streaming video unless it took at least 30min to load.

Is Netflix available in the UK? I have no hang ups about SD-HD. Considering that most television is broadcast in SD (even when stated it's HD) I don't think there'll be too much of a difference. Also, I've yet to meet anyone that, from the ideal viewing distance, is able to distinguish SD from HD unless side-by-side. And unless they look really closely. iPlayer only streams SD and the quality is fine.

Yeah having been using the bbc's iplayer for a while streaming full programs seems to work fine.
And the SD content dosn't look that bad, unless you have a huge 40inch tv or sit too close then you most likly wont notice it that much.

I wish I had a job like Jim where I can have an outlet to a great many people while having little to no real experience with anything relating to technology (beyond playing videogames of course) and giving people my good for nothing opinion. Last I checked, the far greater majority of the content on Netflix is standard definition anyway and if you knew anything you'd realize the quality scales to your connection. It's very possible you'll be running at 320p if your wireless connection isn't very strong. Calling a large group of people idiots for owning a console is pretty responsible of you as well buddy. The fact that jackasses like you are allowed to voice your opinion without any reprimand is pretty ridiculous. Maybe I should say all loud mouthed fat asses who play video games suffer from acute down syndrome? Would that accurately generalize all people in your demographic?

Just to get it out there, I'm a PC gamer first and foremost, but I do have my Wii gathering dust like the majority of us as well as a PS3.

No. I really don't care much about it either. I mean, look how long console HD has been available on computers. However, the smaller the resolution, the bigger of a deal it is when it gets an increase. Like how the increase from the super nintendo's resolution to the N64's was a big deal, but how the increase from the N64's to the Gamecube's wasn't.

Honestly, this was just news Jim had to post, and do some insulting to, since apparently has some consistent beef with Nintendo not catering to him and the "hardcore"'s every whim.

This is great news for Wii owners ... who cares if they can't watch the (small) selection of available titles in HD. The more avenues Netflix uses to get into the hands of consumers, the more brick-and-mortar stores like Blockbuster will have to change their marketing strategies to compete with an ever-evolving media distribution landscape ... or fold trying.

I have used this on my PS3, and (@Tubatic), I have never had an issue with buffer times. It has been instantaneous every time. How's your connection with online games?

Anyway, good news for wii owners. Won't be surprised if this is the fastest selling form of netflix.
