NES and five games for $13,105?

NES and five games for $13,105? photo

I was at the local used game store yesterday and was eyeballing one of those silly Chinese all-in-one systems that have all the cartridge slots you'd ever need to play all your old games. It was $35. $35. Even then, I was pacing, weighing out my options, doing math in my head, and thinking about my unpaid bills. Finally I said to myself: f*ck it, that's what emu...Virtual Console is for.

Some guy on eBay went all the way. No, went beyond. He paid $13,105 for a Nintendo Entertainment System and five games. Hey, I liked TMNT and Super Mario Bros 3 as much as the next guy, but I can waddle down to the earlier mentioned used game store and nab those and about 10 more for less than $20. To be fair, some were in their original packaging with manuals, like Stadium Events.

From the item eBay item description:

I HAVE HAD THIS STORED IN THE CLOSET FOR YEARS FOR MY KIDS TO PLAY BUT THE WAY THAT ELECTRONICS COME & GO AND CHANGE FROM ONE YEAR TO THE NEXT THEY WANTED ALL OF THE NEW HOT ITEMS OF THEIR OWN NOW AND NOW IT'S TIME TO GET RID OF THINGS THAT ARE NO LONGER BEING USED OR WANTED.  THIS SYSTEM WORKED PERFECT WHEN I STORED IT BUT SOMEHOW OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE MANAGED TO MISPLACE THE AC CORD & THE TELEVISION HOOK UP.

I hope you buy your kids some of the "NEW HOT ITEMS" with your earnings, sir. This seems fake or wrong, but there was actually 36 bids, and it was actually completed at $13,105. Who knows if the winner paid or not.

Oh, and I loved this: "MY ITEMS DO COME FROM A SMOKING HOME"

Would You Pay $13,105 for an NES with 5 games? [HBG]

I think I'm going down to my local used game store and buy some games then put them up on e-bay for $2,000.

I would say it's almost certainly an underhanded exchange between two people and this is just being used as a front.

Goddamn, I hit the "add comment" button too soon!

Person 1: Sir, I'll give you $10 for that half-working NES, and 5 games.

Person 2: Did I mention it comes from a smoking home!?

Person 1: I'll give you $13,105 right now! Do you take cash!?

I did some research (don't know if it will be mentioned by the time I post this) but apparently the Bandai Stadium Events game is extremely rare. I never even heard of it and I've played tons of NES games in my time :P

@AlphaDeus - That's what I thought as well, it seems to be a 'Holy Grail' for games collectors. That's very interesting as it is reported that only about 200 reached consumers. Damn.

He didnt really pay 13k for just the system, the prize is apparently the Stadium Games cartridge.

One of the Q&A sections says "it is a true rarity and is valued right now between $15,000.00 up to $25,000.00 because as I have heard there were only around 10 ever put out into the population"

As much as I like rare shiny things, 13 grand is a bit extreme.

Theres a store close by that sells the NES w all accessories, and a number of games still in original packaging. Think the NES ran $135, not sure on the games.

$13k is more than I'd ever pay for an NES game (yes, it was just for one game - the other crap in that auction is irrelevant). Still, SE is ridiculously rare - a boxed copy with all its original material even more so. I can see where a hardcore collector would easily shell out that much.

Honestly? Not trying to sound like a dick, Dale (or D-toiders for that matter), but there's no way this should have been put up with a little research. When I heard about this earlier today, my first thought wasn't "Man, who the hell would pay that much," so much as it was "Okay, what rare game was with it?" I found out how much Stadium Events was worth moments later.

So how did grandma happen to buy her kids one of the rarest games ever? And by extension, how did they not play it?

This is the sort of collecting I just can't get my head around. So this game is deemed a holy grail item by virtue of it being rare. Not being the best game ever and rare, but just rare. What's the point? I understand Earthbound going for a hefty price, so much so that I've been tempted to list mine, because it's a fantastic game and it's also rare. I could take a purple and puce shit today, and you'll never see one like it ever again (since it just went out of print), but it's still shit.

I have an NES and 3 of those games (and a whole bunch more), plus an extra controller and a light gun.

If you want to buy it for $13,000 I'd be glad to oblige, as much as I love me some classic gaming nostalgia.

Way to label without knowing :P As others have said it's because of stadium events, it's an incredibly rare game, especially boxed as it seems there.

As a few others have noted, the reason the price was so high is the inclusion of Bandai's Stadium Events, which shortly after release, was rebranded as World Class Track Meet, included with the Nintendo Power Pad. Incidentally, the Power Pad was first released by Bandai was part of the Family Fun Fitness product line.

Hopefully Dale will update the post to make it seems less sensational and more researched.

Stadium Events is super SUPER rare.

Its even rarer that it comes complete. The cartridge alone can go for a few thousand dollars. While $13,000 is a huge amount, you have to realize that some games fetch $5000 - $10,000 for the cartridge alone, like the World Championship cart.

I find it hilarious how a good portion of the people here think he was paying $13k for an NES and just five generic games.

$13k for Stadium Events is a bargain. A huge bargain.

Look at the condition of the Stadium Events box too, it looks fucking perfect. I'm drooling right now. I'd pay a lot more than 13,000 to have that in my collection. Congrats to the winner.

Man, really starting to lose faith in the bulk of the gaming community. Common sense should tell anyone with half a brain that that no one with even less than half a brain would ever buy an NES for that much money unless SOMETHING was really special in this bundle.

I mean, come on people. Think for half a damn second.

I'm certain these types of auctions are "put-ons" meaning the buyer and seller orchestrates the sale to make it seem like a sought-after title. Then they go to the Press to make it seem "official".

Plus, i've noticed the buyer and seller have defenders coming into the forums
such as these to back up this ridiculous publicity stunt.
