So I guess the Mother/Earthbound community has been talking about this for a while, but I didn't see the connection until this morning as I was cruising around the Game Watch Impress looking for news. LoZ: Spirit Tracks has been really hard to notice in general. Something about the game is just totally ignorable to me.
I guess I should say "was totally ignorable" because as a hardcore Mother 3 fan, I now feel a pressing need to find out everything I can about the game, with hopes that there are a few other Mother-shout outs therein. LoZ: Link's Awakening had more than a few Super Mario Bros references, and the Star Fox cameo embedded in unused files still present on the LoZ: Ocarina of Time ROM still gets me all giddy and silly. To think that the new Zelda game may have multiple Mother 3 references isn't totally crazy, is it?
How about it, Mother 3 fans? Does this shameless fan service get you excited about an otherwise predictable-lookingnew Zelda game?

I seriously doubt that Spirit Tracks' rope is the same as the one in Mother 3. The last one is an important and quite funny character in the game, I don't think it would have the same importance in Zelda's game.
I met Chain Chomps in Link's Awakening before I saw them in Mario 64. I totally had it backwards as a youngster- I thought Chain Chomps were Zelda's thing.
It actually makes me crave Mother 3 more than the new Zelda game, but that probably has more do with my being underwhelmed by Phantom Hourglass (not to get off topic, but PH just felt like a stripped down Wind Waker, and I loved Wind Waker). I love the reference, but it's a big tease, just like Lucas and New Pork City in Brawl. They shouldn't be allowed to reference Mother 3 like that if it isn't coming stateside. It'd be like if Kevin from Seiken Densetsu 3 had a cameo in FFXIII.
I haven't noticed any other cross-franchise references yet, but there's definitely some Zelda in-jokes hidden for series vets. Actually, there's a lot of humor in this game. Like, Almost-Paper-Mario-Level humor.
That Star Fox trick in Ocarina of Time isn't a ROM thing -- I've done it on both the N64 and GameCube version. Thank you, Gameshark and Action Replay respectively!
It certainly doesn't get me excited for the new Zelda, don't really need anymore filler, but it nice to see references between the francises (especially with Mother 3). Nintendo used to do this kinda thing all the time on the Gameboy, we need more of it.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. You know what's sad? It does, and I don't even really like Zelda.
I dont see how this applies to Mother 3 (a great game in its own merit) items appearing in a Zelda game.
"Incest" just sounded too gross.
