I have been looking for an excuse to talk about Dawn of War II ever since the beta went public (download here), and now I have the perfect opportunity to do so. The latest installment of these faction introduction videos focuses on the Orks, which have always been a personal favorite of mine.
So, the multiplayer beta ... it's somewhat different than what I was expecting it to be, but that's far from a bad thing. I'm really digging the RPG lite aspects and focused gameplay. The game is impressive visually, for sure, but above all it's just a blast to play.
What about the bad? Games for Windows LIVE was a royal pain to set up, but beyond that, I can't think of any serious complaints besides maybe some units that need to be balanced; it's hard to come up with much else without nitpicking.
Playing Dawn of War II on medium settings is fine for the time being, but I can already tell this is going to be one of those games that will make people upgrade their computers, myself included.
Beta's really fun so far. I've never played an rts such as this so when i enter my first game. I had no clue what i was suppose to do. (Where Are my Miners?!) But the gameplay is very fun and addicting. So far so good.
How about you give me some bases to build! I couldn't find any supply depots to put at choke points and the vehicles don't transform into siege mode :(
Ive been playing space marines and they all look like theyve ben neglecting their armor. The enviornments look great but I kinda wished the marines looked a bit cleaner as opposed to looking like they just pulled their suits out of the trash bin. Other then that, could have used a better toutorial instead of just trial an error. Also got some nasty bugs. But having an Xbox Live account I found setting up for games for windows a breeze and I really like the new style of gameplay. Waiting for Tau empire though ><
It's not bad.. kinda fun. I just wish there was a tutorial. I do kinda like that your guys can level, it's neat. I'd want to see all the features before spending $50 on it though.
It's pretty fun but I have some complaints. I'm really enjoying it dispite the flaws but I really hope they actually are willing to work on some big changes before launch if possible.
Complaints...
(Now in list format!)
-UI could be done better, like a lot better. In game important information (like what units you have selected) doesn't stand out nearly as well as it should. Overall the in game UI is just a clusterfuck of not that important information. Out of game the UI feels clunky
-Steam >>>>>>>>>>>>>> G4WL. It takes 4 or more button presses to simply accept a game invite from a friend. That's absurd!
-No ingame hotkey editor. W---T---F this is 2000 and fucking 9. We still can't get an in game hotkey editor as a STANDARD FEATURE for RTS games? At least give the option of a q-w-e-r-t-y (left side of the keyboard only) layout!
-Units look samey. The units supporting my Shurekin Platform are the same model as my guardian squad. Makes it a little tough to tell which squad(s) I have selected (see UI complaints) or which squad has a unit standing out in the middle of nowhere.
-Animation/AI reliant. I've perfectly flanked my enemy's unit (one with heavy fire power, suppression, and a firing arc) and start meleeing them to bits. What happens? one of my units steps in front of the unit as they're cutting them down then proceeds to get the whole squad suppressed and gunned down. Yay.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the beta, though the missing builder-units are a strange thing to get used to :-)
Can't wait for the full game though... and then for the expansion that brings back the allmighty Necrons :-) god I like that race... indestructable ( almost ) :-)
@Holyetheline - I like where your head is at, but 'Ork' is the common spelling for an 'Orc' in the Warhammer 40,000 world. Its a WH40K thing, so to speak.
