Need for Speed: Shift goes simulation all over our asses photo

If you were never able to understand what all the Need for Speed fuss was about, it's high time you started paying attention to the series. Some of you may recall that the franchise was given a major face-lift, and now we're getting three news NFS titles.

One such game, Need for Speed: Shift, is looking to be the most in line with our interests (we are "hardcore" still, aren't we?). Departing from the series' traditional arcade racing feel, NFS: Shift is straight up simulation.

It's hard to judge a racing game based on in-game screenshots when one of the genre's biggest factors is handling and a number of other things that need to be seen in motion, but damn do I like the look of the in-cockpit camera.

Need for Speed needs retire gracefully. The name has been milked and drained of all its past glory and is now just being used for any and all mediocre racing games they may have in production.

Sad. I had good memories but recent entries are slowly erasing even those good times.

I still enjoy the Need For Speed series although I haven't played any of them since Carbon. I keep meaning to pick up Pro Street though, should be cheap now. If NFS really wants to compete with Forza and Gran Turismo, it's going to have to bring a lot more to the table than GRID or Race Pro did.

I worked on Carbon, but I have to admit I have no idea what people think of the final product.

I started to drift away from the series as it became more "cartoony." This game actually looks like more of what I like in competitive racing games.

I would have loved the tuner style cars in an actual sim. This looks like Grid. No car customization and stock professional cars.

What does Need for Speed have that sets it apart from other racing games?

I liked pre-Underground NFS (always liked Tokyo Xtreme Racer much better), but why even bother when you have Criterion in-house as well?? Sorry, I forgot about money :P. This game will get crushed if GT5 ever drops.

I agree with the statement about the in-cockpit camera... for those that remember The Need For Speed back on the 3DO, they actually digitized all of the different cars' unique interiors. Why those were axed from later installments, I'll never know. :/

They're gonna have to actually make it a simulator, not an arcade racer masquerading as a simulator as in pro-street. Otherwise, itll be boring as fuck again.

@Chronic Logic - for the most part (certainly not all), theyre accessible, fun racing games, that have a robust customization system to keep people playing. I played Carbon a heck of a lot, buying new cars and making them look cool.

NFS needs to take a few years break and regroup. And like Chronic suggests, it needs something new.

I disagree Celica, GT4 and Concept where horrible, I think this has a good chance if doing well.

@ Nanbu

By GT4 you mean Gran Turismo 4, the gold standard of simulation racing?? Actually it doesn't matter. I haven't played this game yet so I have no clue how it'll turn out :P

Burnout and Mario Kart are more my cup of motor oil anways haha.

Remember when NFS was made by Road & Track? (or was it sponsored? They had something to do with NFS back in the day)

I sure hope that they do it right if they're going to go the racing sim route, otherwise it'll just be overlooked when it's in the same ring as Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, and just recently Race Pro.

Developers/publishers should remember what made some games popular in the first place and stick to doing that, well.

Yeah I do. I loved the way it was pretty much a spiritual remake of Test Drive 2.

I don't really see where NFS is going to position itself between perect arcade racer (Burnout Paradise), more serious arcade racer (GRID, which can be played extremely realistically) and hardcore simulation (GT5, if it is ever released). All three games do what they do to perfection while NFS has only been a shadow of it's former glory recently. And with even more daring racers like FUEL around the corner one has to ask oneself: "Who needs NFS anymore?"

The shots above looke like GRID, only wihout the cool damage-model.
