Need a reason to own a PS3? Gran Turismo shows the way photo

Yeah, the PlayStation 3 games aren't there yet, but they will be. Yeah, the graphics aren't there yet, but they will be. Need proof? Go here, watch the videos, then come to the realization that you've just watched one of the most graphically impressive games ever -- Gran Turismo HD.

Whether or not you are a GT fan, the power and awe insipired by this game should put to rest any doubt that the PS3 is one damn impressive piece of hardware. Now we just need the developers to unleash the beast hidden within.

Yeah, good luck in getting the rest of the devlopers outside of Polyphony to churn out those graphics. Oh, sorry, Konami! You got me!

What was that tool that Polyphony and Konami had in the PS1 and PS2 eras... the synthesizer thing... it used to quantify exactly what parts of the system were being underused during processes. I remember Yamauchi talking about how great it was, but only a couple were made. Anyway, I predict the same as the PS2 for the PS3: handful of developers that fully utilise the hardware.

Oh yeah... and Rockstar, actually.

So I just got a Wii and 360 for Christmas. Live is amazing but expensive (€8 to change my tag!?) Wii is cheap, but having troubles getting online.

I just wish they'd actually use that technology and apply it to crash damage so the game doesn't play like bumper cars. Immersion is reduced to zero when you bump into something.

Hasn't everyone already been over the reasons why Gran Turismo can't have damage models on their cars? It's the price you pay to get the actual licensing. Depressing as it may be.

I rather have damage than a virtual model of a real car. Skip the consumer cars and put in racing cars only, there lots of racing games with damage.

I've actually never heard any explanation for why they can't. Got a link, or care to enlighten me? TIA.

And my comp can't handle the 720p WMV video :(

Nice to see that the PS3 really does have it's first very promising game. Still not enough to warrant a purchase from me, though, even if I could afford it.

Racing games aren't that hard to get good graphics for. Cars don't animate much, and there's just not a lot of detailing you have to do. Personally, I got tired of Gran Tourismo games about 10 minutes in, but then again, most racing games seem to be the same crap to me anyways.

How come that the car in the replay has so much oversteer? Skyline GT-R is an AWD still this car is fishtailing in every corner.

Since we in Swiss I really miss some cows and it would be nice to have the spectators standing on the road running to the sides as the car come close, other than the graphics look impressive, a bit too clinical but that's typical GT.

Good grief, are they still using the same engine and tire sounds from the FIRST game? Graphics are mostly eye candy, but sound really helps you know what is going on at the wheels.

If nothing else, it would also be nice if damage affected the handling of the car, but didn't actually show up on the models, to keep the manufacturers happy.

Did they remember to include a Saturn this time? How about a K-car? ;)

@Andy17Null

They can't use damage models because the car manufacturers won't allow it. They don't want you to think their cars can be hurt by anything. Heaven forbid the Nissan is harder to damage than the Ford, and that causes you to change your mind about a future car purchase. They simply only want you to see their vehicle in its most glorious form.

Wake me when you see it running on a ps3 in the wild.

It will be fun to watch you slowly lose your mind as the completely failure of the ps3 starts to sink in.

@Petrie: Seriously, that's why? Ridiculous. One more reason why inclusion of a copyrighted but well-known entity in video games should be considered 'fair use.' Do car manufacturers try to stop car crash scenes in movies, too?

Im still not convinced. When the latest MGS arrives will be the real test of will power, wether i can resist buying a ps3 or not!

Wow, that game was oversold to me. I totally bought the "then come to the realization that you've just watched one of the most graphically impressive games ever" and then when I saw the images. Just a slap on the face, it isn't that impressive, I have to say that for the hopes I built from the hype, I am disappointed.

People have to stop overselling games, it's only going to hurt the games in the end.

Then why do Midnight Club 3 and Need for Speed: Carbon have real licensed cars *and* damage models?

I think the Gran Turismo "license cars" thing is just an excuse so they don't have to put in damage models.

@AutomaticZen

It is actually true that some car manufacturers don't want their cars to be damaged in games, for various reasons. This was confirmed by Porsche during mid-90's when there was a supposed problem with illegal racing and Porsche wanted to improve their image amongst more respected owners.

And when you have licensed cars from a manufacturer who doesn't want their cars to be wrecked it is a hard decision to leave the wrecking and include the manufacturer or to keep the wrecking and toss the manufacturer. Because you can't have some cars breaking down and others not to.

That is why many developers have opted the no wrecking policy. And as to why some games have the same cars that can break down when other games don't, can be from many reasons, maybe the developer modified the cars to look less realistic or the other developers just didn't want to work in a realistic crashes, your guess is as good as mine.
