It's a WWI shooter. Could you tell the difference?

Even though I'm a bit of a WWII junkie, "the war to end all wars" deserves more of the spotlight than it gets. Especially if the depiction is going to include zombies, werewolves, dragons and demons. Pepper in a mad scientist with a gigantic robo-scorpion and you have yourself a game. And that's what 505 Games is doing with Necrovision, an FPS they plan to release in 2009.

There's really only two ways you can go about this and really make it work. It has to be either scary or totally, over-the-top campy. I'm just not sure which way they're going here, if they're even attempting to make anything more out of this than a humdrum shooter. The trailer does nothing to suggest that there's any more tension than a rousing game of Doom. While the enemies might make me lean towards camp, the scientist seems too serious in spite of his awful attempt at a German accent.

Still, if they give me the chance to kill an undead Moltke the Younger, I'd be willing to forgive just about anything else. Check out the press release below for more details on Necrovision.

Milton Keynes, November 13th – Think you know about World War One? Think again. A new trailer of Necrovision, from 505 Games and published under the 1C label, gives a horrifying vision of World War One that you didn’t learn about in history lessons.

Necrovision is a fast-paced and furious first-person shooter from The Farm 51 that blends historical detail with nightmarish horror. You play as Simon Bukner, an American soldier who decides to help the British effort to take out the German threat. But that’s only the start of his troubles and Bukner soon realises that there’s something far more terrible stirring in the trenches.

Dead soldiers have started to rise from their graves with a lust for flesh. A battle between vampires and demons is threatening to spill from the depths of Hell into our world and a mad German scientist has built a giant mechanical scorpion armed with a flamethrower.

In this exciting new trailer, you get a glimpse into this terror-filled world as Bukner blasts his way through undead German soldiers, hulking trolls, high-kicking ninja vampires and fire-breathing dragons before finally hinting at one of the epic boss battles.

Necrovision will be published in Europe exclusively on PC by 505 Games in 2009.

Wow WWI looks awesome, mecha-spiders, the undead and was that fucking dragons or what. I'm off to do some much needed brushing up on history.

The great battle of 2009 to use as many excessive blury filters as possible is already won

Wsa the vid quality low for anyone else? Also, of course I can tell the difference those were clearly WWI werewolves as the lack of nazi arm bands showed.

WW1 is an interesting idea but I swear to god, if I see another FPS featuring run and gun with heavy machine guns someone will die. Normal people can't do it, even Master Chief is weighed down considerably by a heavy machine gun.

I hereby am invoking what I call 'Wyzzerd's Law': if your game features heavy machine gun run and gun then you need at some point to show your main character consuming super-soldier serum. Otherwise your game makes no sense.

doktorwyzzerd1: Yes because giant robot scorpions, dragons and zombies are totally ok but heaven forbid the guy runs while shooting a heavy machine gun. Totally unrealistic.

Yeah, the trenches and the roasted landscapes, that brings to mind WWI imagery, to me. And the game looks pretty cool, too. Seems to be kind of like Painkiller.

With the dark steam-punk/Sons-of-Ether overtones, I could believe that this takes place during world-war I.

Too bad it's PC only. Looks hellafun.
