NCsoft thinks PC gamers will eventually move to PS3 photo

Ever since this year's E3 announcement at Sony's press conference, there has been a steady stream of watercooler talk about what gamers can expect from NCsoft on the PS3. We know that an agreement has been made, and that NCsoft will produce several titles for Sony products. Apparently, NCsoft feels that PC gamers will eventually transition to the PS3, so this could explain why the company is backing Sony.

NCsoft Europe boss Geoff Heath said, "I think there is a difference between PC and console players but there's overlap as well."

"Our view long term is that people who have traditionally only played on PC will actually now start transitioning to PS3. Once they figure out what PS3 does, I think that take-up will get greater and greater."

It may still be to early to know if PC gamers will add PS3s to their MMO diets, but if anyone can catch their attention, NCsoft can. Titles like Lineage, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars already have many PC gamers glued to their screens, and something similar could bring them out to the living room with SIXAXIS in hand.

We still don't know exactly what NCsoft titles we'll be playing. Heath hasn't listed any titles yet, but Eurogamer says to expect three or four in the first batch. They are currently working with Sony to choose some of the many products (mostly MMOs) that NCsoft currently has in development.

Wow, I don't know about all that. There are so many PC gamers out there that never plan on touching a console controller? Why? I have no idea.

Hmm Guild wars on a TV, I suppose it could kick ass or just fail.

Let's see how HOME does first.

I'm not sure how well Guild Wars would do on a console. In the heat of battle, you'll live or die based on how effectively you can use your skills, and I don't see a controller setup being able to access them any better than the hotkeys on a keyboard would.

Of course, if they allow you to use a USB keyboard and mouse, then it's no problem. (Of course, the real issue is that for the same price as a PS3 and USB keyboard / mouse, you could afford a computer that can play Guild Wars anyway.)

Give me the ability to have my xfire, MIRC, Foobar, Torrents and everything else my computer has, and then you'll have a PC to PS3 convert.

Getting HOME done right, and putting WOW on the PS3, then maybe.

dont forget UT3 on ps3 is allowing full keyboard and mouse support, which is usually, aside from upgradeable video cards, the main issue for pc gamers to make the switch or add console play to their life.

with ps3 full keyboard and mouse support and good server support as well as cross platform support between ps3 and pc this could work

I like to think of myself as a pretty "hardcore" PC gamer, and I have no idea what NCSoft is thinking. Why would I want to buy a PS3 when I just spent all my money buying a DX10 gaming rig? Especially when the 360 offers a better multiplayer platform, which is what most PC gamers are looking for in a console, if they're looking for one at all.

Maybe I just don't understand this because I'm not an MMO guy, but I still think the 360 is a better choice and NCSoft is not persuading me at all.

In other news, NCSoft today announces that they've officially lost their minds.

Back to you Dale.

If he means people who play NCSoft games on the PC moving to the PS3 then he may have something there but to I don't think NCSoft speaks for Blizzard or the many other PC-game developers out there who seem to see nothing wrong with the PC format. Sounds like spin from someone in NCSoft to justify their exclusive agreement with Sony.

Well I don't think the controller issue is always going to be applicable in this situation. Take, for example, UT3 on the PS3. They claim you will be able to connect your usb mouse and keyboard to the PS3 to play AND it will let you compete with PC players. Being the hardcore fps'er that I am, that's a big selling point and one of the complaints I have every time I try to sit down and play the halos.

The only way I can imagine them coming to this conclusion is because of the PS3's relatively open format (3rd party hard drives, installing Linux, M&KB support, free interweb play, etc). I can see that appealing to the PC gamer's desire to customize and mod.

Other than that though, I have no idea. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they meant PC gamers who get a console will get a PS3 over anything else (though I think they'd pick up a Wii first), instead of them meaning that they'll give up PC for a PS3.

Either way. Dumb statement.

I think there's something to this. As a PC and Wii owner, I can play most of the 360 games that I would actually want to play on 360, on my PC under the Games for Windows moniker. PS3 games, however, are a different story, as (I'm assuming) many of those games might be PS3 exclusive.

Plus, BluRayzorzomgpmp.

Also, cocks.

Also, give the PS3 the ability to actually do something convincingly useful when it's not being used for gaming, and I will be glad to agree with them.

What do you want from your PS3? To do something convincingly useful like cleaning your room?!
