NCsoft: Sony's Home app won't sell PS3s photo

Thomas Bidaux, NCsoft's director of product development, thinks that while Home is "very interesting," it probably won't cause PS3s to fly off the shelves.

"One of the limitations is linked to the PlayStation 3 - so the success of Home is 100 percent tied to the PS3's penetration into the market," Bidaux said. "I don't think you can say you will sell more PS3s because of Home, but if the PS3 had the right penetration in the market, then yes - Home will be very interesting."

It makes sense. Some PS3 owners can't wait to get their hands on Home, but we haven't seen much in the way of outside interest. Granted, that may change as Sony puts some advertising muscle into  Home in the coming months, but for now it's just another neat feature for PS3 owners.

If you'll recall NCSoft just partnered up with Sony (announced at E3) to bring some new MMOs to their consoles? While they aren't as excited about Home, NCsoft likes that Sony has a history of keeping their consoles in living rooms for a good period of time.

"You don't want to roll out an MMO and make it obsolete because of a new platform a year after that," says Bidaux. "You want to have your MMO for many, many, many years - as many as possible."

"So the PlayStation 3 is a good platform for us, and we assume it's going to be around for quite a long time. Early adopters, and the early days - we don't really worry too much at that point."

Won't sell PS3's, maybe...

But help push Online Games, Why that's what it's for!

Home is pretty boring, but they haven't added most of the features yet so it may get better. The ps3 will do fine with the price drops and the library finally ramping up. Games and HDTV's will sell ps3's, home is just a neat diversion right now.

If I buy a PS3 I don't expect to use this at all.

I think Sony's Home is cute. It's like doll houses for nerds. ;)

I don't even understand what Home is all about. Seems pointless to me.

It might be a really neat concept, if they included a suite of casual/party like games that were fully integrated with it.

But yeah, i'm not holding my breath for Sony to do things the best they can.

If I had a PS3, I'd probably use Home once or twice a week. But why the hell would people buy a PS3 specifically because they're excitied about Home? It's The Sims with better graphics.

home looks like it will be cool, but it will mearly be a connecting element. it isn't going to be a "game" persay, it is just a social tool to bring all the games and gamers together.

What happened to all the people on here claiming that Home would be *the* system seller? Bueller?

It's the same way that Miis were the big system seller for Wii. They sold the systems...and then nothing happened. Boo.

This is no surprise, but what I see as a pretty important statement is, "So the PlayStation 3 is a good platform for us, and we assume it's going to be around for quite a long time. Early adopters, and the early days - we don't really worry too much at that point."

Apparently they are completely not worried about sony's previous blunders with the platform and possible stumbling points.

I'm not so crazy about Home itself, but I am excited about the new PSN features it will bring along with it.

Home looks like one of those things that will fill up a 20GB hard drive, 99% of which you won't use -- sort of like a version of Google Earth that caches every texture you see.

If so... NO WAY.

As a PS3 owner, I’m certainly intrigued by Home...but I can’t see myself spending hours upon hours in the virtual world per day, or even per week. I barely have enough time to play the games I own.
