Atari does kinda seem like that guy that's like 38, and is just now realizing that all those cool bands he liked as a young'n no longer work as conversation padding with a 23 year old woman.
Blizzard's position is understandable. I mean, do honestly think anyone exists that:
1) would be interested in Diablo III or Mists of Pandaria,
2) doesn't know those things exist yet, and
3) follows enough video game news that they'll hear about it first on E3?
2 and 3 are pretty much conflicting with each other. I guess there are some people who only follow video game news during Big Events, but I can't imagine they're a large enough crowd that it's worth appealing to them. And events are pretty expensive.

NCSoft have more or less taken over gamescom each year for the last couple of years. I won't be surprised that now Guild Wars 2 is on the verge of release that they put all their focus on that.
"Finally Blizzard, who still won't be attending. Diablo III is almost here, World of Warcraft is getting its Mists of Pandaria expansion, they've got their own flavor of Dota in the works, and not only are they skipping E3, but Blizzcon is cancelled this year? What is this nonsense?!"
Unless I missed it said on the site for some reason, around Feb 29th it was said that Blizzard is also letting 600 people on their staff go (Read this on Eurogamer) and like I said, unless I missed it being said here for some reason, I'm very surprised no ones said anything about this yet.
They've got Diablo 3, Another Starcraft 2, A WoW expansion and an unnamed/nearly unspoken MMO, all in the works, yet they're letting 600 people go? Trouble in paradise if you as me.
As for E3: I think we're going to see another decline in E3 again, maybe not completely this year but this year could be the start. I don't think this is going to be something that stops here. The industry is in a bad way and I think between the problems the industry is having as a whole, and any ill feelings still felt by those who opposed to the ESA backing SOPA, we're going to see a fall in a number of booths and devs/publishers with less scruples (like Zynga) are going to scuttle in.

I still refuse to support anything Zynga-related. They are quite possibly the most soulless, most evil game company I've ever seen. And considering how some of the big-name publishers have been acting in recent years, that's saying a lot. >.>
