Some NBA teams are using NBA Live 09 as a testing device to explore the potential impact of trades and other front office roster decisions. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Rockets GM Daryl Morey said that he uses it to gauge team effectiveness when certain players have the ball. He elaborated with an example: ... you can tell how often, if [Kevin] Love throws an outlet pass, how often his team scores on the possession. You can tell how often [O.J.] Mayo goes right versus left, how effective the team is with Mayo pulling up and shooting versus when he pulls up and passes instead.
The article goes on to state that up to 15 teams are currently using Electronic Arts’ latest basketball product to their own advantage. What makes NBA Live 09 better than the competition, NBA 2K9, is a feature called Dynamic DNA. Essentially, the DNA system is a statistical aggregator that feeds new information such as shot and scoring tendencies directly into the game. The reason why GMs would want to use it is that it is constantly updated and directly affects gameplay.
The one thing Dynamic DNA can’t do is stop Ron Artest from beating up people who care enough to show up for a basketball game. It also can’t stop Shaquille O’Neal from rapping, or the Pacers from being terrible. [Via Kotaku]

I saw this earlier, it's kind of retarded. I can't really understand what they see in these games, especially considering everyone knows that the 2K series of bball games is the more realistic of the bunch.
I guess this explains why the Rockets can never win a playoff series anymore.
But can it see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
Does Apple Jacks taste like apples?
@EDS: It's not about the quality of the game itself gameplay-wise; it's about the quality and depth of the statistical data employed by the game. Dynamic DNA runs on data from Synergy Sports Technology, a company that already provides stats to real-life sports teams -- I imagine that the implementation in NBA Live 09 is just easier to deal with for teams' GMs.
they'll regret using it when they start shooting people [/Jack Thompson]
Can it stop Mark Cuban from being an obnoxious douchebag? Because that would truly be a miraculous achievement.
Doesn't NBA 2K9 have essentially the same feature, dubbed "Living Rosters"?

Just like Brian is Stewie's douchebag?
...And whatever you do, don't rape Rupert!!!

...at least the first link works.
Or the kobe from-- Oh nevermind.
Thanks for the tip, Samit.
I have seen the light.
Go LAKERS!
It's a pretty awesome idea if it was to work a hundred percent of the time. Unfortunately, what the stats cannot tell you is the instances that led to the player shooting that particular shot at that particular spot- only the end result.
For instance- was an extra pass necessary, did the player shoot because of a roving defender, a botched dribble, shit like that, was it a off balance shot- all these things that can't be put into a stat machine.
The best thing about this is probably the ability to use this for your fantasy team picks.
