Naughty Dog: The PS3 is a bottomless pit photo

It seems to be a common consensus that this generation might be one of the longest ever seen. Tight budgets, the rapid rise of development costs, and the ever-closer ceiling of graphical improvements mean that the PS3 and Xbox 360 might be sticking around. Naughty Dog certainly hopes so, and thinks the PS3 has enough power to last another half decade.

"We're getting comfortable," says co-president Evan Wells of the PS3. "We're not itching for new hardware. I would love to keep working on the PlayStation for 5 or 6 more years ... I think there's still a lot to get out of it.

"We made a very big advancement between the first [Uncharted] and the second game, we're really tapping into the Cell processor, but there's more there. We're not really feeling limited by the hardware, it's more about the hours of the day and how quickly we want to get the next game out."

He continues on to say that the PS3 is like a bottomless pit of videogame magic: "It really feels that sometimes it's this bottomless pit of processing power, you find the right kind of job for it and it can just churn through those things so fast, which really helps with a lot of our rendering and post-processing effects."

How long do you think all this talk will last until developers and publishers get itchy feet and look forward to the arrival of the PlayStation 4?

I agree that the PS3's exclusive titles aren't yet pushing the hardware, but ports like Dragon Age that are not optimized for the cell architecture are sluggish. I'm hoping the PS4's cell (if it has one) is better at pretending it is a regular processor.

As for the Xbox 360, I think we're about to see the best it's going to get with Mass Effect 2 and [maybe] Alan Wake.

The Wii... Please just give us a normal controller, Nintendo. Thanks.

The PS3's only been out for 3.2 years. I'd give the PS3 another 3 years before something new happens or it finally becomes unprofitable.

Consoles usually have a shelf life of 5-6 years. Except for the PS2 which doesn't know when to quit. So another console won't probably pop out until 2012. Then again, technological development might have reached a peak or has slowed down.

I wonder what Naughty Dog will say when they leave SONY to set off in their own direction(if they ever do that is) if asked the same questions they were asked for this article.

Its alright for Naughty Dog, with the tons of help the get directly from Sony to make Uncharted. But as soon a multi-platform developer struggles to make a game on Sony's bizarre architecture, they get slated.

Well right now Developers don't want a new hardware, this means more development costs to just adjust to a new system and they are just starting to profit from the PS3. Besides, nothing will happen until 2012.

Having both gaming boxes sitting in my cabinet with no fanboy attachments to either one, I can easily say that the 360 has about hit it's peak in terms of graphical power and processing (we might be seeing more and more double disk games soon), and I certainly haven't seen any 360 games that surpass - or even match - Gears of War 2. The PS3 is just starting to come around with some pretty spectacular titles that look amazing in action - Uncharted and Killzone to name a few, are head and shoulders above anything I have seen on my 360 - now if only the gameplay for both systems can evolve like the visuals have I would be happy.

I don't think we will be seeing any new consoles until software sales for the current gen start to dip. When games like MW2 can sell 6 million copies why would Sony and Microsoft need new systems? Just keep tapping the current market with better software until interest starts to wane, then shovel out the next box that can make prettier pictures!

@Arianol

IBM recently announced they're discontinuing development on the cell platform. Whatever the PS4 has, it won't be cell. That worries me about the PS4 having backwards compatibility with the PS3 catalog.

Anyways, I'm still happy with my PS3 and 360, especially since I got a new 42" 1080p set. That alone was like getting new consoles. I hope this gen does last longer than the last couple.

The longer the better. I don't have the money for another system any time soon. And by that I mean years, given what this gen started at.
Also think of all the great looking games that came out on the PS2 after the PS3 was out! I'd rather have those games before the PS4 is released.

The PS3 actually isn't that powerful as a gaming platform, and as such I'm quite astonished to see what people can do with it.

But the amount of people who CAN do something with it are few and far between. And that will be the downfall of the PS3.

I don't want to see new consoles yet. Developers are really starting to hit their stride on current gen consoles, as evidenced by games like Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2.

Or in other words:
"We sank a lot of money into the development of our engine and we would like to make additional games on this engine for maximum profit. We don't want a new console because it would cost us money."

"we don't feel limited"
Yeah sure. Graphics programmers always feel limited. There's just not enough processing power out there to make this limit disappear.

I am tired of people who make Sony sounding like the one who gave a birth to Jesus. Developers have not maxed out any platform. Wii has a decidedly underpowered architecture so it's out of this argument. Microsoft itself is maxed out with DVD storage limitation (but this could easily get remedied with flash rom options for games, etc.) Sony clearly has the advantages with some dodge architecture decisions with memory, and supposedly slow read speed of bluray which seems like true when I play bluray movie on PS3. In any case, both 360 and PS3 appeared to be under utilized by developers. Microsoft's shortcoming is the easy development kit which may not encourage developers to think outside of the development kit. Sony's shortcoming is the esoteric decisions on hardware and software architectures. Sure the first party company like Naughty dog will have no problem using the PS3 architecture since the mother company will continuously feed the company financially. However, this is not true for many third party companies. In any case, I would love to see companies utilize 360 and PS3 more and optimize their software for them. Screw Naughty dog's obvious marketing talks paid by Sony. I warmed up to Naughty dog due to uncharted 2, but meh.....

There really isn't much of a point bringing out a new gen yet when most games today don't even look as good as the first Uncharted, or are as large as Oblivion.

But then that's never stopped them before!

It really seems this way.

Considering the PS2 has enjoyed a *strong* 6-7 years of market, by processing comparison, the PS3 should do 8-10 just fine.

I don't expect to read about a new Sony console (just don't brand it PS4 and give us a new controller already!) before 2014, but we'll see...

Weeehoooohh!!! I played and finished Uncharted 2 over the christmas period on a friend's PS3, and I have to say it was BeeeeYooootifull. Graphically superb, though I didn't rate the Character design that highly. It's very linear, but tight, which is good, but there are some things in it which are just shocking. The cover for one - a very poor imitation of the Gears mechanic, and secondly, but less shocking - no decals, and a corpse count of five. Apart from that I enjoyed it a great deal, but not as much as the reviewers obviously. Not the best game I played last year by any stretch, but probably the prettiest. So Naughty dog can do good things with the PS3, and that's good to know, because they appear to be in a minority of coders who can make the beast squeal like a pig, and with the so called bottomless pit of goodness that the PS3 offers, more pig-squealing is going to be needed to see that the PS3 reaches its potential. So far, so meh.

If Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 2 are any indication, when I look at those graphics compared to Killzone 2's, which had damn good graphics for the beginning of the year...if within the same year games keep improving by that much, that fast I could easily see PS3 going another five years before needing to go PS4. It obviously isn't peaked and has much more room for growth than say, the PS2 did.

360 on the other hand...great games still come, but on the technical side of things they seemed to have leveled. Does anyone really think a 360 game will improve past Gears Of War 2 or Fable technically? They need a new console in a year or so if they want to keep up with the same consumer PS3 is gunning for.
Because great gameplay without keeping up graphically...oh, heh. That's a Wii. I guess 360 could take it's time, Nintendo is doing okay money-wise.
Still, lose the graphics race, you lose me (right now they're close enough to equal that I play both). Graphics aren't everything, but they're still a large part.
Plus, they need a more stable console. They red ring again with the next console and Sony will fly right by them again like the PS2 did.

@Oncomouse: You must have missed the memo. IBM halted production on the successor to the PowerXCell-8i processor and not their entire line of Cell chips. For the time being the expectation should still be that PS4 will run on Cell, though if this generation goes long enough who knows what will happen?

Also, @OtakuNoise; While we're wishing, why don't we just bring back Clover Studios at that. ;_;

People act like somehow the machine is evolving or something.

The reason some games like KZ2 can be bested by games like Uncharted 2 isn't because somehow the "graphics got better." It's because they have different devs with different skill sets and different pirorities. I think sometimes we forget that.

As far as whether or not the PS3 is a bottomless pit only time will tell but it's not like eithe system suffers from not being bottomless.

I'd also be happy sticking with the current generation of hardware for a while. The 360 is also a "bottomless pit" of processing power, really any console is, the more you work with it the more you get out of it.

Learning a new console is a huge pain. I'd prefer to work with a console I know, squeeze more out of it, and produce a really solid game.

Backwards compatibility is a privilege not a right. A console's worth really shouldn't hinge on whether or not it can play its previous generation's games. That was great for PS1 to PS2. PS3's current evolution has done away with it and i don't think thats a bad thing. It's not really that big a deal

Sigh.... yet another case of corporate bullshit... the PS3 processor itself isn't completely maxed out yet, but the graphics card however... it's just unable to produce higher quality graphics on par with most games nowadays. The RSX is the equivalent of a 7900GX2, which no longer holds up against today's games. People always think the PS3 is this amazing machine because it cost so much and because Sony invested so much money in the Cell processor. Thing is, the Cell processor isn't even that powerful, it's good at some things and great at others, but it's not amazing.

PC gamer (as of just a year) here, I think you know the drill. Seriously the technological gap between the console's graphics cards and that of AMD's new hd5000 series is one generation bigger than the gap between the xbox and xbox 360. Optimization may be all good and dandy, but there is no substitute for much, much better hardware. That said, I am still using an hd4850 and will for a while because it maxes nearly everything on my 32" hdtv with a lowly res of 1360x768. Also, upgrading is an opportunity to get better graphics/performance if you desire and only a necessity after say 5 years.

Crysis, and it gets better with every new graphics card that comes out. That's the point you seem to have missed.

Uncharted 2 looks fantastic, but the PS3--like every console ever made--is held back by its unchangeable hardware. PCs will always have the edge.

That's not fanboyism (I haven't gamed on a PC since mine died last year, and I own all three current-gen consoles), it's a simple fact.

Also pcs may have the "edge" in graphics but they have lost the "edge" in install base as far as "for gaming" goes. Most households have a computer yet choose to get a gaming console for gaming needs. As far as "consoles" go the ps3 is far better graphically than it's competition. That's "the point" you seem to have missed.

I didn't miss it, because I agree with it. It just seems like people always seem to forget the PC when they argue the merits of each gaming system, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't overlooked here as well.

I've also noticed that a lot of people seem to be switching away from PCs for game-related entertainment, and I'm in the same boat. After all, my PC died last year and instead of replacing it, I bought a Wii, 360 and a PS3.

the reason why people forget about PC gaming is that YMMV with games depending on the specs/requirements. with consoles, you get a consistent (hd or sd) experience (or you used to when they only had one base model).

plus, you may have the power but where are the PC games? its like having a Lamborghini but no roads to drive it on.

just my .02

i personally would love if this generation lasted another good 5 years. we've all spent enough on our systems/setups that we deserve it!
