It seems to be a common consensus that this generation might be one of the longest ever seen. Tight budgets, the rapid rise of development costs, and the ever-closer ceiling of graphical improvements mean that the PS3 and Xbox 360 might be sticking around. Naughty Dog certainly hopes so, and thinks the PS3 has enough power to last another half decade.
"We're getting comfortable," says co-president Evan Wells of the PS3. "We're not itching for new hardware. I would love to keep working on the PlayStation for 5 or 6 more years ... I think there's still a lot to get out of it.
"We made a very big advancement between the first [Uncharted] and the second game, we're really tapping into the Cell processor, but there's more there. We're not really feeling limited by the hardware, it's more about the hours of the day and how quickly we want to get the next game out."
He continues on to say that the PS3 is like a bottomless pit of videogame magic: "It really feels that sometimes it's this bottomless pit of processing power, you find the right kind of job for it and it can just churn through those things so fast, which really helps with a lot of our rendering and post-processing effects."
How long do you think all this talk will last until developers and publishers get itchy feet and look forward to the arrival of the PlayStation 4?

As for the Xbox 360, I think we're about to see the best it's going to get with Mass Effect 2 and [maybe] Alan Wake.
The Wii... Please just give us a normal controller, Nintendo. Thanks.
Consoles usually have a shelf life of 5-6 years. Except for the PS2 which doesn't know when to quit. So another console won't probably pop out until 2012. Then again, technological development might have reached a peak or has slowed down.
@_@! damn that name looks very similar to someone I know...
Well right now Developers don't want a new hardware, this means more development costs to just adjust to a new system and they are just starting to profit from the PS3. Besides, nothing will happen until 2012.
I don't think we will be seeing any new consoles until software sales for the current gen start to dip. When games like MW2 can sell 6 million copies why would Sony and Microsoft need new systems? Just keep tapping the current market with better software until interest starts to wane, then shovel out the next box that can make prettier pictures!
IBM recently announced they're discontinuing development on the cell platform. Whatever the PS4 has, it won't be cell. That worries me about the PS4 having backwards compatibility with the PS3 catalog.
Anyways, I'm still happy with my PS3 and 360, especially since I got a new 42" 1080p set. That alone was like getting new consoles. I hope this gen does last longer than the last couple.
Also think of all the great looking games that came out on the PS2 after the PS3 was out! I'd rather have those games before the PS4 is released.
But the amount of people who CAN do something with it are few and far between. And that will be the downfall of the PS3.
"We sank a lot of money into the development of our engine and we would like to make additional games on this engine for maximum profit. We don't want a new console because it would cost us money."
"we don't feel limited"
Yeah sure. Graphics programmers always feel limited. There's just not enough processing power out there to make this limit disappear.
But then that's never stopped them before!
Considering the PS2 has enjoyed a *strong* 6-7 years of market, by processing comparison, the PS3 should do 8-10 just fine.
I don't expect to read about a new Sony console (just don't brand it PS4 and give us a new controller already!) before 2014, but we'll see...
360 on the other hand...great games still come, but on the technical side of things they seemed to have leveled. Does anyone really think a 360 game will improve past Gears Of War 2 or Fable technically? They need a new console in a year or so if they want to keep up with the same consumer PS3 is gunning for.
Because great gameplay without keeping up graphically...oh, heh. That's a Wii. I guess 360 could take it's time, Nintendo is doing okay money-wise.
Still, lose the graphics race, you lose me (right now they're close enough to equal that I play both). Graphics aren't everything, but they're still a large part.
Plus, they need a more stable console. They red ring again with the next console and Sony will fly right by them again like the PS2 did.
I hope we get at least 2 or 3 more games from them for the PS3.
If that's the case, and if my memory is right, then I believe we'll be waving good bye to the Cell Processor.
Also, @OtakuNoise; While we're wishing, why don't we just bring back Clover Studios at that. ;_;
That the rumour but there's no confirmation at the time and little to back it up, so take that with a grain (cup) of salt.
The reason some games like KZ2 can be bested by games like Uncharted 2 isn't because somehow the "graphics got better." It's because they have different devs with different skill sets and different pirorities. I think sometimes we forget that.
As far as whether or not the PS3 is a bottomless pit only time will tell but it's not like eithe system suffers from not being bottomless.
Learning a new console is a huge pain. I'd prefer to work with a console I know, squeeze more out of it, and produce a really solid game.
Realy, i dunno if anyone can remember the days when a pc game's development took 3-4 years? Yeah maybe time has past, but realy, i believe in what Evan Wells said, time makes better games, and there are other things than money witch are core elements for a game's development.
Crysis, and it gets better with every new graphics card that comes out. That's the point you seem to have missed.
Uncharted 2 looks fantastic, but the PS3--like every console ever made--is held back by its unchangeable hardware. PCs will always have the edge.
That's not fanboyism (I haven't gamed on a PC since mine died last year, and I own all three current-gen consoles), it's a simple fact.
I didn't miss it, because I agree with it. It just seems like people always seem to forget the PC when they argue the merits of each gaming system, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't overlooked here as well.
I've also noticed that a lot of people seem to be switching away from PCs for game-related entertainment, and I'm in the same boat. After all, my PC died last year and instead of replacing it, I bought a Wii, 360 and a PS3.
Graphics aside, I think I'll survive.
the reason why people forget about PC gaming is that YMMV with games depending on the specs/requirements. with consoles, you get a consistent (hd or sd) experience (or you used to when they only had one base model).
plus, you may have the power but where are the PC games? its like having a Lamborghini but no roads to drive it on.
just my .02
i personally would love if this generation lasted another good 5 years. we've all spent enough on our systems/setups that we deserve it!
