Naughty Dog not interested in Uncharted motion control photo

Developers might be shanking their own grandmothers right now for a chance to hop aboard the motion control gravy train, but Uncharted developer Naughty Dog isn't so keen, at least for its flagship franchise. If you were hoping to bring a little waggle into Nathan Drake's life, you'll be waiting for quite some time.

"We really don’t have any interest in using the motion control to do a third-person action game," says Naughty Dog boss Evan Wells. "If we were going to make a motion controller game, we’d want to tackle it from the bottom up and make sure that we were designing the game around the motion control, the way the best Wii games are designed.

"I’m not a Wii hater at all, in fact, it’s probably one of my most played consoles in the house. I have a 3-year-old son which might account for some of that, but Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort are some of the best experiences of this generation, honestly ...  I think the PlayStation audience is totally for it. In fact, I bet you there are lot of closet Wii owners in the PlayStation community."

As a member of the PlayStation audience, I can't say I'm personally up for having Wii games on my PS3, but what about you? Looking forward to Carnival Games HD?

As a member of the PlayStation and the Wii audience, I can say that Uncharted (and just about every third person shooter) would be more fun with the option for RE4 Wii Edition-style pointer controls.

Maybe you have a point, John. Resident Evil 4 looked sweet with motion, and most who reviewed it seemed to agree. It's too bad people will just write your comment off as "fanboy" banter.

Oh, how witty.

And I'm all for multiplatform games. This "My console has more exclusives than yours!" bullshit is for retarded people.

Jonathan, I have to respectfully disagree. There's a reason why motion controls were moved from The original Uncharted( throwing grenades aimed by the sixaxis sucked). Uncharted is just too fast paced of a game for the RE4 Wii style to work. There's just too much action coming from all angles to make that work cohesively. Imagine having to fight the Guardians with the RE4 Wii scheme.Hell the last boss fight would suck with those controls.

@ Steel Brotha- I hear you. That's why I said "option". Pointer controls aren't for everybody, but I know that I'm much faster with them than I am with the analog stick. I think it largely depends on what you're more used to.

Also, I never mentioned motion controls.

The first Uncharted had motion controls with the sixaxis. You needed to tilt to aim grenades and balance on narrow ledges. The sequel is better off without it. I did not care for motion controls in RE4 either. Not to mention Leon couldn't move while shooting. Resident Wiivle controls in Uncharted would be a mess.

Thank god!

The sixasis controlled granade throwings in Drake Fortune was annoying enough. On the other hand i did like shaking the controller to shake off the vampyre mutant spaniards

As long as motions control is NOT mandatory.

I don't know. It only makes sense to not use motion controls on a game that wasn't built around them. Save the motion controls for a game that actually takes full advantage over what it can do. I've played a good many games that had pretty awesome motion controls. Hell RE 4 worked beautifully with them so there are some exceptions to the rule. I just don't feel like slapping motion controls onto a game that was built around using a controller is a very good approach. At least not most of the time.

"Carnival Games HD"

OH GOD.

@Holmes
As good as RE4 wii was, the combat is slow and precise anyways. It really caters to sitting there and pointing at your screen. Uncharted is a much faster paced experience and I think aside from dieing a lot more than you already would, it would just kill the pacing and "immersion".

Sounds like Naughty Dog is sucking a little Sony d*ck.
Though sorry for that word picture.
Sony must be forcing this stuff. They just have to be. Because that was no coincidence the Wii reference coming up. That was an indirect hype for the wand...which just you watch, Naughty Dog will have some game that launches with it. Because that was way too obvious to me.

@ steelbrotha @ oncomouse

I think he simply meant the pointer style controls would be a cool option, not to be confused with the controller tilt sixaxis stuff

I didn't think about the pace, maybe motion would be better suited somewhere else. Matter of fact, i don't think motion would work at all with most shooters, it would have to be a lot slower paced. I don't know now Holmes, maybe if it were slowed down a bit. I didn't think about the fact that RE4 is very slow.

Holmes: You really liked those dreadful RE4 Wii controls? Turning the camera with the analog stick and aiming with the pointer was terrible. I'd always wanted RE4 re-released on GameCube with the extra PS2 content put back in but the controls ruined the game. Tacking that nonsense on to Uncharted would destroy one of the best action game series of the generation.

I'm not closeted about owning a wii, but I pretty much use it to get exercise, I don't remember the last actual "game" I played on it

I'm fine with this. Motion controls wouldn't work. Pointer controls, however, would be good.

You are neither funny nor witty.

I too was thrilled when the balance beam and grenade motion control aspects of the original Uncharted were left out of the sequel. By the time I'd accurately get a bead on throwing a pineapple, my head'd be blown into next Tuesday.

That said, if it meant getting headshots to actually register in either game by having an accurate reticle/targeting system, I'd be all for it.

You know you can play all of RE4 on the Wii with a GameCube controller, right? It'll have the same exact controls as the GameCube version, too, but as you stated, with all the extras of the PS2 version.

Personally, I LOVED the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls in the Wii version, though.

I know, right? What better way for Sony to hype up their product than by using their loyal puppets - ya know, the same loyal puppets that thanked Bungie for inspiration with Uncharted 2 - to praise a competitor's console?

I knew I liked these guys for a reason! It's frustrating enough when you can't get the buttons to do exactly what you need, let alone mapping controls to unresponsive waggle. Let me fail of my own accord, dammit!

Pointer-controlled shooting is one thing. Motion for motion's sake (i.e. Lair) just ends badly.

Wii controls can work if they are done properly. Those who screw up only give the wii controls a bad reputation. I honestly believe that wii type controls could add a lot to "next gen games" and make them even more interesting. However, both the natal and the wand do not look like they could be used for most games unlike the Wiimote.

Naughy dog is working on another ps3 game? they should take a lesson from insomniac that you can still create your main franchise and a platormer. i would love to play jax 4 on ps3 , imagine jax and daxter running off the uncharted engine.
