Natal + PS3 wand = crappy third party plastic crap photo

You know it's coming. Natal is little more than a concept to most people, yet that hasn't stopped the parasitic third party plastic garbage makers from dreaming up peripheral nonsense for both it and Sony's motion control wand.

"One of the biggest challenges for peripherals firms is keeping up with changing technology, particularly the trend toward interactive gaming started by Nintendo and now embraced by Microsoft’s Project Natal," says DreamGEAR COO Richard Weston.

"From all the recent revelations at E3 for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, motion sensing devices and add-on accessories for these devices will be the main focus in the future," adds Paul Coucher of Logic3.

Typical. Third parties are not going to let Natal's "hands-off" nature get in the way of a "hands-on" rubbish steering wheel. It'll be hilarious how many Natal users will buy a load of peripheral junk, completely missing the point of Microsoft's new invention.

@ Jim: Actually, I would consider purchasing some sort of steering wheel if I wanted to play a racing game with Natal.

I mean, who drives with no wheel or controller? You can't drive with your hands, it won't feel right.

Natal is such a waste of time....

there's a "trend towards interactive gaming"? you mean next-gen games are actually gonna be INTERACTIVE? Wow, I don't think I'm ready yet.

The E3-Motion-Three will either be a step forward or a step to the side.

For Natal I can see plastic peripherals becoming huge, and not being something stupid. Granted I can see it coming with the game rather than from a 3rd party. For instance.. Natal. Say your driving, holding your hands at 10 and 2 on the "virtual" steering wheel in mid air. It is hard when you have nothing to grab, Natal is sure going to have a hard time recognizing where the "Virtual" steering wheel is, but lets say when you buy Need for Speed you get a wheel (kinda like Mario Kart) with say.. colored markers on it to help Natal do more accurate tracking, AND you get the tactile feel of grabbing something analogues to the real thing. I can also see it for swords as well, holding a 12 inch red plastic stick will help Natal better orientate where your hands are, rather than closely trying to see how your hands are orientated.

I get your point though.

I think for some added features, like moving in a FPS, weapon swapping etc, it may be useful to have these plastic crap items. I just hope since they are needed less, they cost less. I would be all for a gun with some buttons on it for a FPS. While it partially defeats the point, many other things from Natal can still be in effect. My outfit being in the game if its an urban/gta liek shooter as well as my persona, etc.

There needs to be some form of peripheral for Natal... I can't see how holding my hands out in front of me will ever be comfatable let alone without a device to hold.

I think this might be less likely. Both Natal and the DualWand rely heavily on camera feedback.

Wii crap only needs to make sure the infrared emitter isn't blocked (sometimes not even then), but the other two, especially Natal, need a camera to do the sensing.

Motion control is and always will be a gimmick to me. Sure it brings in the big bucks, but to gamers like me it means nothing. It gets ridiculous when you have plastic add-ons to your Wii-mote to make it look like a tennis racket, or a bowling ball, WHY not just go bowling irl instead? It'll cost a'lot less than a $40 game and a $20 add-on for the controller.

This is the one reasons I may actually look forward to when oil runs out. No more cars but hey I can play a METAL DS... anyone?

@jrod885

Although I disagree with your comment on motion sensing you've made a damn good system of proving who's casual and whose hardcore. If you have any add-ons that aren't guns, steering wheels, practible accessories (i.e. chargers) or came with the game. You're casual.

After seeing how responsive the PS3 Wand is, I might buy a sword and a shield peripheral just for the hell of it. But as unangbangkay has said, they both rely heavily on camera feedback so I dunno if anything will come out for the PS3 Wand. But as for Natal, expect a slew of peripheral when the thing can scan objects to use. I'm pretty sure that Microsoft and third party companies will be taking advantage of that feature to make more money.

I wouldn't be surprised if Natal gets confused if you hold some accessory. After all, it relies on being able to identify your hands, feet & head to infer posture and movement. If you obscure your hands, e.g. by holding a wheel, you might actually lower the motion sensing capability rather than enhance. Since I think its motion sensing will be highly questionable to start with, this is not necessarily a good thing.

As for the PS3 "wand", the important bit is the bit on the end. I don't know if I see much market for accessories. After all, how are you meant to attach (for example) a golf club *above* the glowing ball? The only way I see it being possible is if accessories have some clear plastic ball compartment which allows them to house the ball but somehow extend it.

Anyway, the Wii demonstrates what utter shit these attachments are. I don't know who buys them but I am certain they are next to useless.

One big potential issue I see with Natal is the lack of tactile and force feedback since there's a sense of disconnect between the game and the player.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand the point of plastic add-on crap for Natal.

Here's the solution right here:

Use your Wii wheel for all driving games on Natal, your light gun attachment and Wii controller for FPS, and your guitar hero/rock band guitar peripheral for pretty much anything else you can think of - sword fighting, pole vaulting, etc.

You ever wonder what the bottom of an avatar's shoe looks like?

Bam, there it is.

At least a gas/brake pedal would be good with Natal. That's one of my most fundamental disagreements... okay, so you can control steering, but how about the speed?

Also, the scanning BS shown in the video confuses me.

@ EternalDeathSlayer - But that would defeat the purpose. Have you never pretended to drive a car when you were young and just used your body to simulate the car and wheel and stuff?

@ megaStryke - It's like the word "imagination" just pops into your head when you see it. Of course it only works for us folks who watch Spongebob.
