NASA + Sony: Watch shuttle launch on PlayStation Home photo

Tonight at 4:50 p.m. EST Space Shuttle Discovery will launch into space. This is the first time you'll be able to participate in a sort of social launch using your PS3.

The launch will go social in PlayStation Home. Users will be able to chat via Bluetooth headsets with others watching the launch, all from inside the PlayStation Home. On a yacht. That costs $5. That's a small price to pay for this cool bit of sharing of a historic moment, though. And NASA is also sharing other launches and goodies, so you'll get your money's worth.

"We're excited about this new way for people to experience the exhilaration of human spaceflight as part of a larger community," said David Weaver, NASA associate administrator for the Office of Communications. "In addition to the other two shuttle launches planned for April and June, NASA looks forward to sharing more of our endeavors with PlayStation users."

If you really hate Home you can watch the shuttle launch free on the web.

I have no interest Home, but approve of anything that supports space exploration.

why would anyone pay 5 dollars to watch the launch through home when they can watch it on the computer or using the ps3 browser for free? makes no sense

This is actually a rather cool concept... and for a change it's a decent use for Home. They've done the Sony E3 presentations before, but things like this... or the Oscars... would be fun.

So... I can pay to watch it in Home, or I can watch it for free on any television or PC?

Why would you log into Home to watch a Shuttle launch? You'd get much better performance and quality if you just went online.

My little group is going to watch Endeavor's launch in April. I was thinking of taking some pics in the Become shirt, so as to make sure the Destuctoid community was properly represented. : )

This would be cool if I didn't already get the NASA station in HD. It comes with the package I pay for I swear.
