[Update: We've got a trailer! Check it out below.]
Namco Bandai formally announced Soulcalibur V today, and while we've yet to see the game in action, the publisher's doing a fair amount of teasing.
Taking place 17 years after the events of Soulcalibur IV, the fighter focuses on the son of Sophitia Alexandra, Patroklos. In development by Project Soul for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, we're being promised new characters, an expanded online mode, and the return of character creation.
Vague details, to be sure, but with three years since the soul has burned, we'll take what we can get. We're gearing up for E3, and you have to hope Namco Bandai is too -- maybe we'll see the game in action, or at least a fancy CG trailer, at the show in June.
All I ask is that Tira returns in some form. Used to utterly dominate with her and I'm buggered if I'm going to put another 100-odd hours into learning someone new.
17 years, huh? Does this mean a lot of characters won't be returning? I know a good number of them are probably relatively ageless, but that can't be true for all of them.
Yay for character creation, I LOVED that about SC IV. It added so much value to the game for me, along with the armor unlocks.
oh god yoshimitsu, that was one crazy mother fucker. I want link back in the game, he actually fight the universe fairly well and was an awesome fighter.
As long as it's got more of a SCII feel and less of a SCIII/IV feel, I'm happy. SCII was the last time I was playing chess at a hundred moves a minute, everything after it felt too damn "tacked on" and schizophrenic - the last two games didn't know what they wanted to be.
Hopefully V can get a grip on its own identity with regard to being a SoulCalibur game.
I think character creation would be best suited by actual moves and weapons that aren't held by existing characters. Palette/skin swaps aren't that impressive.
Also, yes, please make the women sexy again. Ivy looked better as a high-C/low-D, not a triple-E. Goes for Taki as well. Ease off the tits, focus on the hits.
As long as all of the guys aren't dressed like pro-wrestlers, I'm in. What in the world was up with what Mitsurugi was wearing in SC4? They already have Maxi, Voldo, Rock, Cervantes and Yun Seong (and Lizard Man!) for to cover all of the bases in uncovering alot of playing area as well as all of one's fetishistic needs!
Ah, I don't really care about any of that. It doesn't even matter which official characters return as long as there are some decent options in the character creation mode (more than even SC3 had). At best, they'll be the standard to measure player-created characters against, canon be strung from the yard arm.
Besides, Cervantes is going to be back. That much is guaranteed. For every other character, let us all see what creative new era appropriate character designs the Namco-Bandai crew can whip up this time.
I'm not sure how far along in development this is, but could it be a contender for Nintendo's next-gen system launch title? I'm not implying it would be an exclusive or anything.
If it's just 17 years, you'll likely see Mitsurugi or a character very similar to him, unless he's gotten shot a few more times since.
I could list them all out, but either they or a very similar character will make a return based on popularity. All I hope is that the plot isn't as ridiculous as SC4... and I would love the return of the story modes as they once were... And I honestly didn't mind the little strategy game thingy SC3 had. It was better than the tower was to me anyway...
The reason the game is taking place 17 years in the future is probably just so they can make all of the characters look older and not how we remember them, and then nickel and dime us by releasing their classic appearances as DLC costumes.
Ivy's movesets will change for the nth time ( there goes countless hours mastering just frame Calamity Symphony and Summon Suffering ), and she will probably be wearing nothing but a pair of bottlecaps and a Band-Aid this time around.
I'm still pretty disappointed in the character modeling of this and 4. It just doesn't look much like the Soul Calibur games of old. Iono, that's probably just me being picky or something.
