Namco Bandai tease was for Digimon, not Xenosaga photo

A short while back, Namco Bandai had teased that an RPG will be making a big comeback, and fans excitedly crossed their fingers for a new Xenosaga or other such venerable franchise. If you're a fan of the Xenosaga series, you are to be disappointed bitterly. If you're a fan of the poor man's Pokemon, you are to be thrilled.

Yep, Digimon is coming back.

The big RPG tease was to herald the return of Digimon, Scamco's male-centric Tamagotchi franchise that eventually got its own TV series and became quite a popular Japanese fixture toward the end of the nineties. There is to be no Xenosaga, and no Baiten Kaitos. We should have seen this coming, really.

The new game appears to be called Digimon Story, and it's due for arrival on the Nintendo DS. Yeah I know, this sucks.

[Thanks, Miles]

Because I totally wanted more of an already too damn long RPG series.

I'd be a lot happier if this were new IP, or even Baiten Kaitos, but maybe we'll finally get a good Digimon game. The show was much better than most other crap on kids' TV then, so I can only hope it gets a decent game for once.

I would have paid for all their crappy DLC if it had been another Baten Kaitos game.

Xenosaga was Monolith, while Bamco holds the rights to Xenosaga and its charadcters, Monolith is now with Nintendo (acquired in 2007), which has yet to bring any of their RPGs stateside. Tell Nintendo to bring over Soma Bringer, now. Kthx.

Baten Kaitos was Tri-Crescendo and Monolith. Think the last we heard of TC was Eternal Sonata, which actually wasn't a scam on Live, but a good and intact game. But that's on PS3 now, too, right?

What's there to really expect from Namco these days but Digimon or another Super Robot Taisen game they're too dickless to bring to the US themselves? Well, not that I'd want Namco localizing them, Atlus USA usually steps up and does the job for them.

Namco wanted to be an RPG contender, but they don't seem to have what it takes to make it happen these days.

If they had to do another Digimon game, why not remake the first two Digimon World games? Those two kicked major ass, seriously. 2 was (and still is) one of the best dungeon crawlers I've ever played, and I'm not even talking with the rose-tinted glasses on. I went back and played it a few months ago, and it's still as great now.

@ The Silent Protagonist - Perhaps you've heard of Tales Studio? Or maybe the (arguably) most popular JRPG of this gen, Tales of Vesperia? Whether or not you like the series, I'd definitely say Scamco is a contender.

I laughed. God, who was I kidding?

@Electrium: I overlooked Tales because, well, its the Tales series. Once Namco kicked the main series into "oversaturate" I stopped paying attention to it. That and Namco seems to follow a playbook of what they think SE is doing, rather than what they are doing. I'd like Namco to be Namco, like Atlus is Atlus. Do your own thing.

I never actually played Xenogears or Xenosaga, but I can tell this is going to piss a whole lot of people off...

To sum it up for you pedro, Xenosaga was an incredibly long cutscene held together by dungeons.

I kid, I kid. It was a great game, but the second and third didn't really live up to expectations and the series as a trilogy is long as balls. They're a classic but I think they need to be left alone.

How exactly is this a "big comeback"? There have been two Digimon World games on DS very recently. I got one called "Dawn" or something like that no more than two years ago. This even looks like it's using the exact same assets.

Also, Xenosaga was garbage.

@TehPeanut: It seems from the little I've seen that the "comeback" refers to this new game being based on the very first generation of digimon (i.e. the original character dude whatever his name is, and the OG T-Rex Digimon)

I am mildly excited, digimon world 3 was the shit.

Of course, it seems kinda uneccessary to do the countdown shit when there was a digimon game released on DS like, two years ago, but that's namco bandai for you.

Uh, wait, The first DS digimon game was called Digimon Story (Because every game had to have DS in some form)...

Man, I wish monolith would make a Digimon RPG, the DB Kai rpg on the DS is quite good, concidering it crimps from Super Mario RPG and Breath of Fire 4.

I liked Digimon back in the day. I'm just hoping that this will have something to do with the first series of the anime........that'd be sweet.

@Silent Protagonist

Monolith developed the recent Dragonball Z RPG for DS, which was very, VERY good. Not just by DBZ game standards, but by RPG standards as a whole.

That's a relief, I'd rather see them release some child's game than further ignore the excellent story that was Xenogears.

The first 3 games on PS1 are pretty fun if you are a fan of the show but it goes downhill after that. PS2 Digimon Data Squad game is totally unplayable thanks to random encounters every 5 secs.

If all it was was Digimon I don't understand why they had to get us all rile up by saying stuff like, "That RPG returns." When I think of RPG's by Namco I sure as hell don't think of Digimon. I was really excited when I saw the countdown page, saw the background, and thought, "Oh yeah. It's Xeno." But, no. Of course not. I used to like you Namco. I really did.
