Namco Bandai's newest Tales games: Tales of Graces, Versus photo

Just when you thought they ran out of words to pair with Tales of..., Namco Bandai officially announces Tales of Graces and Tales of Versus.

Tales of Graces is a Wii game of a new...genre, says 1UP.  "The RPG In Which You Come To Know The Power To Protect" is what they call it. Riiight.

In this game, due out in Winter in Japan, expect a seamless world, where towns and dungeons run into each other. The talented animators at Production I.G. are working on the cutscenes and character design will be done by Mutsumi Inomata. The new Style Shift Linear Motion Battle System will allow characters to switch battle styles on the fly. And forget waggle: game play was demonstrated with the Wii Classic controller.

Also announced at the same time was Tales of Versus for PSP, a 4-player Smash Bros. style Tales-based fighting game. A story mode will also be included. While the game will have 35 characaters, all we know now are four: Yuri from Vesperia, Luke from Abyss, Shing from Hearts, and Richter from Symphonia.

I'm interested in both titles. How about you?

Tales of Versus already has my interest. I mean, the most recent Tales games have been Smash-like already (what with the direction+button specials like in Smash), and it'd be a good translation.

I'm really excited. For Graces, I may wait and see what comes up first. But yeah, I'm looking forward to Versus more than Dissidia! *hears horrified gasps in the crowd*

Despite the Gratuitous English, Tales of Graces might be worth picking up if it can manage to ford the Pacific. Versus, on the other hand, sounds like another opportunity for Bamco to steal my money with DLC.

Praise the lord we can play with a classic controller. Tales of Symphonia 2 felt so awkward with the wiimote and nunchuk.

I'll buy the Wii version if I'm convinced enough as time goes by and I can see some videos and screenshots of the actual game.

A question re: Tales of Franchising if you will:

I know absolutely fuck-all about the Tales series except for when I played Eternia for some 2 hours back in the day. About the most I know about the other entries is that the most popular sources for hentai doujinshi are Abyss and Vesperia.

Is there anything I need to know for if/when I pick up PS3 rerelease of Vesperia (which I heard was a pretty good entry)?

@unangbangkay: If you've played Eternia, the battle system is pretty much the same, just a little more streamlined and better controlled. Still takes place mostly on a 2D plane, but you can free-run to dodge attacks and reposition yourself now. There's also a skill system and over-limit attacks aren't as much of a pain to pull off anymore (none of that "press X+Square+Triangle while HP is flashing" stuff). Thematically, the games are unrelated, aside from some small references to spirits like Gnome, Undine, etc, and even those are used in different ways.

Vesperia doesn't have any story links to any of the other Tales of... games, so there's really nothing you need to know beforehand.

Are the tales games good at all? How do they compare to different Final Fantasy games or Chrono Trigger? I never really tried to expand my RPG game playing (even though it's my favorite genre) since I don't really have enough time to play that many. I get really into all RPGs I play and try to finish everything available, and with final fantasy at least, that usually takes me over 80-100 hours or so.

I'm surprised she hasn't posted yet, but in terms of questions and opinions about which Tales games are good and how they compare, I'd await SAKU's post on this story, which should eventually come. The "breakout" title a lot of people do enjoy would be Symphonia on the Gamecube if that's any help.

@thisissami: I'm probably the wrong person to answer this, since I hate Final FAntasy and Chrono Trigger, but Tales games area lot more action-intensive so there's more to keep you awake. the recent TAles games have gone way overboard on the "Let's cram way too much filler material in here to artificially extend the game's length", but the originals(Phantasia through to Eternia) and Symphonia and it's sequel are pretty good imho.

Don't expect amazing stories, though. Pretty much every game in the series has the same plot with new character/place names.

I'm waiting to hear more info on these. A fighting game could be neat, but it could also go really badly if they stick too many RPG qualities in it. Graces looks nice so far, though.

And I usually say, I'm willing to bet neither of these come out in the US. (Though, Versus is more likely to stay in Japan than Graces.)

Sadly, I bet neither comes out in the U.S. because I don't think Dawn of the New World sold well. :(

"being able to to switch battle styles on the fly." That seems good.

But the seamless world with no instances at all, seems even better.

BUT...even better is the classic Wii controllers!!!!

"The RPG In Which You Come To Know The Power To Protect"
"Style Shift Linear Motion Battle System"

That sounded a lot to me like:
"The RPG In Which You Fight Historical Battles of Feudal Japan"
"With Real-Time Weapon Change"

In other words, I think it's a bit soon to hipe over not-really-new-at-all RPG features.

Did you forget to mention Tales of Vesperia for PS3? Or was that in another article?

Anyway, Tales of Graces looks great and Namco continue to please me with their genre names.

The 4 characters announced for versus rock. Although Shing is only cool because he has the same japanese VA as Simon.

Blending dungeons with towns sounds like a good idea. I just hope they don't use it as an excuse to make the game short.

If Graces and the PS3 version of Vesperia get confirmed for release in NA, then my Christmas wish will come true! *sparklesparkle*

But seriously, here's hoping.
