N+ handheld multiplayer servers no longer exist photo

Pour one out for the online component of N+ handheld. According to a post on core developer Metanet Software’s blog, the community servers for the DS and PSP versions of the platformer are down for good. All the data on said servers has been lost, despite attempts by publisher Atari to retrieve it. Another online option won’t be presented to owners of the title, either, as it has been labeled “something of a financial failure” and Atari is withdrawing support.

We’re not sure when the servers went dark-dark. This situation is attributed to the January 2009 closing of Silverbirch Studios, the developers of the aforementioned handheld versions of the game. The Metanet post is recent, but we’re guessing level-sharing capabilities were spotty -- at the least -- after the Silverbirch collapse.

“We are saddened by the news,” the post reads, “since this marks the end of a (rather short) era of sharing levels and playing multiplayer games on the handheld systems, but we are not surprised; this was an inevitability that we think unfortunately arrived long before it was due.”

A sad ending indeed, but hey, at least the single-player still functions, right?

The handheld versions had multiplayer components? Seriously?

I don't have online service for any of my systems, but this story still makes me a sad panda to hear that N+ was a failure. It's one of my favorite DS games, and it's just a port. :(

I loved the original N, and always planned to pick this up.

They had level-sharing, Los. I'm sad to see it go, but I do have to acknowledge how much the DS version sucked. Did you know you could accidentally erase your entire save game in two button presses on the main screen?

N+ is such a fantastic game, I didn't realized it had performed so poorly sales-wise. This news makes me sad, like you said though single-player still works and there is plenty of fun to still have there.

I share all of your sentiments. I had no idea it was a "financial failure". I made sure to support this game fully by buying it new. It isn't just one of my favorite DS games. It is one of my favorite games ever. I'm truely saddened by this news. I was even thinking about doing this months Monthly Musing based around it, and I've never made the time to do any blogging on here yet. This game is a perfect blend of alot of my favorite game aspects, and it is so well designed. So much for a sequel... It is nice to see that not only does this game have other fans, but is also notable enough to get an article on a quality game site after most would ignore it because of how long it was out. Well, at least their the possibility of another one on the internet.

It kinda makes sense. It was 23 mb... So it was REALLY easy for PSP people to pirate that up. shame, I liked it.
