One of my only major complaints about BioShock was that for a first time FPS player, I would have preferred the sensitivity of playing with a mouse over the right stick on a 360 controller. Since I don't have the SuperComputer Of The Future and playing it on PC was not an option, I often found myself wishing for a better way to look around me. Seems like I may not have been the only one reimagining a better FPS control scheme. N'Gai Croal posted his concept for a Metroid Prime inspired Wiimote -- and boy, do I like it. What do you guys think? [Via Level Up - Thanks Joe!]

woooow
its soooo much diffrent than a regular wiimote......................................................
N'Gai Please...
It wouldn't change things up that much.
I don't want to get used to wiimote controls for smash bros though.
Gcube controller ftw.
@wilbo
You joke, but that would make pressing those two buttons so much more comfortable. Not to say the original is bad, but this would be an awesome improvement.
I like this improvement a lot.
That would be amazing in Metroid, but that might be weird in a game like Super Paper Mario where you hold the remote horizontally.
That would definitely make sense for Metroid. I can't imaging playing some games with the plus and minus buttons that close to A. But it's definitely an improvement on most levels.
The redesign in the picture looks like it would be more comfortable and user friendly and I have a Wii so I've had extensive hands-on with the original Wiimote. This would be a welcomed change to me.
Works for metroid, but only because of the control scheme they chose. While it'd be amazing for Metroid, I don't think it will work for other games as well.
The controls work well and logically for me. A and B are raised because they are primary context-based action buttons. +/- are auxilary, and recessed to de-emphasize them. Having all of the buttons in the same style is a step in the direction of a button-heavy PS/XBOX scheme that caters to experienced gamers.
The only mechanic that doesn't work well in Wii games IMO is the forward/backward motion sensing. When I pull it back or push it forward, the on-screen character is half or 1/4 through the motion but I've fully extended my arm and need to move in the opposite direction to reset like a mouse on a tiny pad.
What's up with the changed picture?
N'Gai 3rd party hardware ftw. If he were to make a game-phone, would it be called the N'Gaige? N'Gaiden?
I can't say I like it too much. I'm sure it works great with Metroid and games using a similar style but it really detracts from the basic user friendly style that has been adopted. However I would prefer the +/- and 'Home' buttons to be shifted a 1/4 of an inch upward. My only gripe with the controller though is 'up' on the D-pad. It's rather uncomfortable to reach has I have to stretch my thumb over.
Man, Colette, your on a roll with good story's today
There was a Wiimote concept similar to that if I recall correctly and two additional buttons in that area was one of my early desires for the controller. Being from the small city state of Europe Nintendo hasn't seen fit to allow us to play MP3 yet so I can't comment on that game specifically.
Some alleged early Wiimote designs, not what I was looking for but interesting nonetheless:
I love it.
Although it may not be quite as good for sideways games like Paper Mario, that would merely be because it feels weird. For games like MP3 where you hold it normally but still need + and -, however, it would be a dream.
*approves*
It would also work greatly for RE4.
/agree
I wonder if the next nintendo system will even have the same concept of controls, or if they will concoct some new thing, or even just simply go back to normal controls. There are pros and cons of going either way, obviously they don't want to compete in the graphics dept.
neeeds moar buttons?
I thought bioshock controlled pretty damn well on the 360, definitely well enough to keep the thick sheet of dust growing on my wii.
@agentmoo: you get the award for making me laugh out loud today. nicely played, nicely played.
Holy crap, that's...that's a great idea. Damn, now I'm all disappointed.
Neat, but shipping a special controller with the game just to move up the + and - buttons is a bit unrealistic.
This would have been better from the get go for the Wii. I find the + and - buttons quite cumbersome at best. This would really be handy for FPS games.
You want to improve the Wiimote? How about giving it an angle like the Nunchuck? I know it's supposed to look like a remote control, but seriously, some ergonomics would _really_ help in pointing the damn thing at the television screen. My wrist doesn't want to bend at that angle using a straight remote.
I posted this earlier, with the suggestion that buttons be under A, rather than over, so that they don't interfere with games where you hold the Wiimote sideways. I really, really want this.
nah, that wouldnt work. you'd hit the + and - whenever you reach for the A.
I like my big lonely A button. it messes up developers' heads.
I only have a few complaints about the Wii Remote. The home, minus and plus buttons are just too small and reaching down to press the 1 & 2 buttons is inconvenient especially in games like Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda:Twilight Princess that I have played. Other than that, I really like the controller, but Croal's proposed redesign is even more appealing.
I'd like it for games like Metroid, but my concern would be when you play a game that requires holding the Wiimote horizontally like in Super Paper Mario. For that game I thought the + and - buttons were in the perfect place.
I always like the idea of having customizable shells for different types of play so the buttons can be in different places for different games. This could be the FPS shell
could never happen based on HALF the ppl i know that have wii's. this may be hard to believe, but adding buttons only frightens and confuses them.
I don't comment because Mxy has all my opinions.
I think this update would be completely unneeded. The entire time I was playing MP3 up until I got the last weapon, I was completely expecting something to be mapped to the other 3 d-pad buttons, and I was completely let down and felt a bit cheated. That was 3 usable buttons completely unused right near the A button, and easier to hit than the + and -. I also felt cheated at how few new weapons were actually in MP3, besides the grapple beam, there wasn't any actual new weapons at all, just the Hyper mode, and that was my only complaint with the whole game.
God, please make nintendo make these. Putting the often used and bloody awkwardly placed plus and minus buttons so far from your thumb's resting poition on the "A" button is the one thing that makes the Wiimote slightly annoying to use. 3rd party modders -> new Wiimote top-plate and wiring plz?
I think this is an awful design. First, the buttons would be very small like that. Second, the buttons would be hit all the time inadvertantly. I use the middle of my thumb to hit A, and I can comfortably hit down on the d-pad with the tip. With this setup, Id hit the other buttons every time I tried to fire a missle. No thanks.
Are the buttons as is really uncomfortable for some? They aren't at all for me.
Very nice
Somehow moving two buttons upwards slightly does not strike me as a particularly ambitious controller re-design. Furthermore, I agree with mandlebaum123 that you would constantly hit these new - and + buttons accidentally.
