Atlus has announced that they will be publishing My World, My Way for the DS. If you can't tell by the above trailer, it's an RPG which is obviously being marketed towards girls. Without getting into the whole, "girls play the same games guys do" argument, I think that's totally cool that they're bringing out something that's aimed at the demographic without it being a Petz or Barbie title.

What's grating my nerves about all of this is the content of the game. The story revolves around a spoiled princess who casts off her tiara in exchange for armor to win the affections of an adventurer with whom she is smitten. The game has mechanics which reward the player for being selfish, allowing them to pout more effectively and get whatever their heart desires.

I'd hope that there's some kind of turning point for the character late in the game or that she's punished comically for such behavior over time, but I can't help but think that this is a really bad idea. Thank God it's Atlus and, therefore, under the radar of a lot of people or there would no doubt be some outcry over this. Odds are that its February release won't even be noticed.

A press release follows the jump.

IRVINE, Calif. - November 13, 2008
Atlus U.S.A., Inc., the publisher you all will love (or else), today announced the new world-crafting adventure My World, My Way for Nintendo DS™. After being turned down by her fated love, Princess Elise is determined to cast off her dress and fineries in exchange for a suit of armor and a weapon and prove that she too can lead a life of excitement. As Elise, the lands you explore are yours to transform as you see fit. If the bitter sting of rejection wasn’t enough to stop you, how can a bunch of unruly monsters? It’s your world, your way, and that’s that!

My World, My Way is scheduled for release on February 3, 2009 with an MSRP of $29.99.

About My World, My Way
Elise is a beautiful princess who has been given everything she’s ever wanted. Upon turning 15, she realizes there’s only one thing in the world she lacks – a handsome boyfriend. She sets out to remedy this by asking her father to hold a ball in her honor, to which every prince from every kingdom is invited to come and try their hand at wooing her. However, only one young man catches Elise’s eye, and, as it turns out, he is no prince, but an adventurer. Knowing that fate itself has ordained him as her true love, she confesses her desire to share in his exciting life... Only to be flat out rejected. He tells her, "If it is truly your desire is to be with an adventurer such as me, I would ask you first to do something with that long hair. Cast aside that frilly dress, and don a suit of armor. Gain some experience in battle, and when you have matured, we shall meet again. Until then, I bid you farewell."

And so, much to the Kingdom’s shock and dismay, Elise, the clueless princess, sets out on her adventure! It’s her world, her way, and as long as she can help the weak, slay the monsters, and win enough fame, she’ll get her happily ever after!

Why does this remind me of a certain television program that I'd rather forget about?

"Selfishness is Your Power," eh? I'll bet we'll be seeing ads for this in Reason magazine. :P

The idea that complaining loudly enough will actually change the game world could be amusing if done correctly, but it could also be a disaster...keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

So she gets her world, her way ... as long as she does it the adventurer's way! At least girls are learning to be selfish as long as they're doing it in deference to a man's wishes.

Wow. That's... Incredibly insulting. I seriously want to punch this game in the squishy bits.

There are games out there that allow folks to slaughter human facsimiles for entertainment. I see little problem with this, really.

There can't be a turning point, if the story tries to teach something to the little girls then they will just stop playing.

Comical punishment needs to come in real life.
