Yesterday Infinity Ward Creative Specialist Robert Bowling went on an information dropping streak about the upcoming PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Those looking to play the game on the PC can breathe a sigh of relief as he tweeted that the PC version of the game will indeed be landing on the exact same day as the 360 and PS3. He doesn't have the minimum specs yet, but he says the PC version will have Prestige Mode and plenty of Steam support, which is good news for those who prefer to shoot with a mouse.
Bowling also dropped some info on the PC version's servers, or lack thereof. On the Bash and Slash podcast he discussed the upcoming PC version and let slip that it would not have dedicated servers. Instead Infinity Ward will be using a propriety matchmaking network called IWnet that runs along side Steam to do all matchmaking so that it will "allow matchmaking for our PC users as well, just like you have on a console that’s built in on Xbox Live and PSN." This is obviously a lot different than dedicated servers as IWNet basically works like a console game's multiplayer and matches you up with players of the same rank. According to Bowling there will be "no dedicated server list[s]," and you will rely on IWnet for "matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches." Kind of taking what is unique about multiplayer gaming on a PC and crushing it, huh?
Sorry to get you PC gamers all excited in the first paragraph and then come down on you in the second. What do you say? Boycott?
[Thanks, Johnny and Andrew M.]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Goodbye IW.
If I wanted a console, I would have bought one. I want a PC version on my PC, not a crappy port with no servers, no mods, no maps, no recoil. Will they bring on the crappy textures as well? lol
Yeah nobody is going to buy this on PC at all now. Not that they care, I'm sure they're perfectly happy making their mediocre shooter the 360 crowd eats up and buys millions of.
From Valve I might take it, because it'd be fucking brilliant, but MW1 was no brilliant title (at least on PC, I never played it on 360. Could be poor port, but I doubt it, everything worked), so this isn't something that'll find it's way into my games list.
They finally managed to kill the stupid elitist jackoffs, or at least culled their ranks a fair bit.
Seriously, the freaks with their stupid mods and clanservers and ridiculously pretentious rules have been keeping me from returning to COD4 for months.
I will get immense satisfaction from pirating this. Until the first Steam sale, there's no way I'm paying extra money for less features.
No, I'm just not into this half arsed realism bullshit.
TF2>CoD
eat me.
The hardcore crowd though... yeah, they are pissed. The IW forums are insane right now, I think they actually deleted a 100+ page thread that was all about how horrible this is.
It's just another sign of the times... games becoming more mainstream, the older, more niche-market feeling crapped on. As a PC gamer and fan of old adventure games and RPGs I feel this crap falling on me on a daily basis.
Oh well.
they cant admit that they have made a mistake.thats ugly....i lost all my trust in IW and Activision.
In l4d they still support dedicated servers though, plus the matchmaking really is kind of necessary, otherwise playing with friends or even getting a versus match together would be a pain in the ass.
In the case of MW2 however, it's really not necessary or wanted. Nixing dedicated server support is a pretty bad thing and lessen the ability to have a smooth online experience.

Might even sign it for amusement purposes.

It all makes sense now.

Most people will buy the game, yes. On consoles.
The PC crowd in general looks into these things, and I can assure you that these measures will hugely put people off. Couple that with the fact that not using multiplayer means that you don't lose anything from pirating it, and you'll see how things go from there.
They are going to lose TONS of Revenue and piss off a lot of people by this little diddy. No more purchases from Activision Console, PC, or otherwise, if this is what they want, they can have it! Seriously, this is a horrible action taken by IW and Activision!

boycott all actvision games, we love blizzard but half of actvisions income comes from pc gamers.
rent or buy used consoles only, publisher don't get no money from used game market.

This is good news.
I happen to like Matchmaking. When it works, it works well and creates an even playing field.
You know what happens when you don't have dedicated servers on PC? You start playing games online with people with a ping of 120 or higher, the experience becomes saturated, lagged, and not enjoyable. We are used to a seamless lag free network, we are use to a low latency environment, we are going to be pushed back into the 56k experience because of this (just look at Fear 2 and OFP:DR - because this is exactly what is happening right now). You cannot host a 32 man server on a local house hold connection, you need at least 1.5 to 2 gigs of upload bandwidth speed for it to be a seamless experience.
And they wanna charge 60 bucks.

For all the people who are crying elitism, get off your "I'm not an elitist" high-horse, because you're essentially practicing what you're preaching against. While matchmaking definitely has its own place in the gaming world, so do dedicated servers, and I'd argue they have a much more important place in it. They provide a hub for like-minded gamers to get together and play consistently, for one. You get to know people who consistently come to the same server, and even those who you don't strike up a friendship with you still know better than some random John Doe from the CTF game last night, and it helps build a genuine community. Not to mention previously stated complaints about ping levels, clan battles, custom maps (I can't not play on the all-Goldeneye map CSS server I frequent) and so on so forth. PC gamers are throwing a fit about this for a good reason, without a doubt.
Can you explain to me how this is a good thing? PC users have had a system in place that has worked for well over 15 years, server browsers are the easiest way to get into a game with the amount of players you want and the ping your looking for. Ok so fine let's keep the matchmaking after all it's not a total loss, but why get rid of dedicated servers? Now I have to rely on shitting internet connections to play? Fuck that, 90% of the US has shit for upload speeds from their service providers unless you pay twice your bill in order to get the faster speeds. Also they are gimping their pc market by getting rid mod support, that is what keeps most pc games alive for years, why the hell do you think people still play the original half life? Because of it's millions of mods that completely change the game. This is a huge slap in the face to pc gamers as usual and if I were most people just don't buy this shit, buy the console version if you want a console experience, stick to games that are made specifically with pc users in mind and not just lame ports.
Shows how much you know, CoD Was a PC only affair until CoD2.
