MW2 may have had the biggest entertainment launch ever photo

Seems like the early morning analyst wasn’t too far off the mark regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s day-one sales. Activision internal estimates have pegged worldwide launch day sales at a cool $310 million. According to Activision, this little estimate nugget makes MW2’s launch the “biggest launch in the history across all forms of entertainment” with around 4.7 million units sold. Roll that around in your head for a second.

So, this is the reason why my GameStop’s midnight release line was wrapped around the abandoned plaza the boutique sits in. Subsequently, its the reason why I spent an hour or so inside of Wal-Mart in a much shorter line with all the wonderful gentlemen who came with their infants, foul-mouths, and energy drinks to purchase the game at midnight. I like the idea that MW2 stomped all over day-one entertainment launches, but man, Wal-Mart is a mad depressing place to chill at in order to get a disc.

Regardless, props for the sales. We suspect that all of you purchased this game, right?

I guess that means I'm one of the only people in the entire world who hasn't bought it.
I put it in my Goozex queue, though. Only 300 people ahead of me! I should be getting it around the time MW3 comes out.

a big fuck you to harry potter and frodo!

Will the media and general public now remove their "gamez r toyz 4 kidz" glasses?

I very much doubt it.

I'll pick this up in the spring sometime, after I finish most of the games in my backlog (including the original MW). I wanne get through Bioshock 2 first as well.

Both Gamestops in my area were sold out, as well as the Walmart. I had to go to freakin' K-Mart to pick it up, but at least I got a free $10 gift card with the purchase.

Didn't get it, but that's because I'm getting L4D2 instead :)

Getting Borderlands for Xmas, might get MW2 for Xmas from somebody else I guess.

I didn't buy it. I'll probably play it like DaedHead8 and get to this in the spring.

Its sparking interesting conversation and I surprised myself by enjoying the first one (single and multiplayer), but I'm too engrossed in Dragon Age and have had my fill for shooters at the moment.

I didn't buy it yet 'cause I couldn't afford it, but I have a $25 giftcard to Walmart coming my way so that'll make the price a little more affordable.

Looking forward to this game event though I didn't play the first one.

Nope, I previously had no interest in this game. I am now curious and want to play. Since I still hate Activision I will wait and buy a used copy.

I didn't buy it. I can't wait until the hype backlash for this game. GTAIV's was pretty huge and was actually still a great game, MW2's will be huge.

What needs I have to put the cursor over an AI combatant and press the left mouse button were mostly satisfied by Quake 2, and any lingering inclinations were finished off by the original Half-Life. Not that I haven't bought shooters since, but it takes more than the hype machine to get me to buy it.

Er what I meant to say... I rented it and, ya know, the game is great. Gameplay wise it's amazing. No, I don't agree with all of the decisions behind it's release. But now I think buying it isn't out of the question. If I can gather the money. IW may not be PC friendly and they aren't very PC in general but they make incredible games.

Nope didn't pick it up. I want it but I'm just not plugged into the hype machine so it's just another game amongst a sea of games I want.

I'm just waiting for the hype to wear down so 3-6 months from now we can all walk around talking about how shitty it is because it's cool to hate big titles after the hype is gone. Then right around that time I'll probably just be playing it and I'll be all "This game is sweet," and everyone on this site will be all "That game blows."

Nope, I wasn't really that into the first one. Decent enough single player, but way too short. And the multiplayer never really grabbed me, due to having more morons on it than Halo back in the day and being nothing more than a less strategic Counterstrike.

I'll probably pick it up in a year or so if the price drops (which amazingly still hasn't happened to any notable degree for Cod4), but until then I'm having far too much fun with Borderlands and am patiently waiting for Heavy Rain.

I picked it up, loved it, and will continue to love it for a very long time. Even if that means I supported terrorism, or even worse, Activision, I don't care. Game is awesome. I'm still playing Borderlands and I plan on picking up L4D2 next week. I just love me some shootin' games.

I've not bought it and won't be doing so until it's in the pre-owned bargain bin. Nobody in the UK with half a working brain would buy this new, let alone before a price drop.

I can't really stand playing FPS games on the console, and the PC version is a giant Fuck You to all PC Gamers, so I haven't, and won't be, picking this one up.

I bought it and am addicted to it. The ending to the single player is so pathetically bad that I can barely stomach it. It's presented nice but the story itself needs massive editing.

Spec Ops is really awesome, and Multiplayer is addicting as well.

Overall: great game

Just a tip for those that want games at midnight launch but don't want to wait in line.... show up at 1 A.M.

That's what I did and I walked right into the store and bought the game.. no waiting, no fuss. It was great.

There was supposedly around 200 people @ Futureshop and 10 people @ Wal-mart. futureshop was also giving away a free 4pack of Monster with each purchase.

I wasn't going to buy it but after 2 of my friends got it and told me to buy it I am glad I did. Spec Ops is addicting!!

I hate Call of Duty because every time I go to my friend's house, he's playing it. However, at the launch of Modern Warfare 2, there was a tournament at my local Play N Trade. About 70 people showed up for the tournament, which lasted from 8 to almost 1 in the morning, and my friend won. It was quite sweet. He got a 15 kill streak in the first round, and pulled out a fly win in the final round.

Yes.

I bought and loved it.

People who are saying they don't want to follow hype, just think it's cool to not like what others are liking. It's a good game, hype had no influence in a lot of peoples purchases.
