Music game sales are down 46% photo

NPD Group’s Anita Frazier has cast a grim outlook on the formerly booming music game market, revealing that sales are down 46% from last year. Although things are bleak, it's not all bad, since music games are still top sellers and the recent release of The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 may re-energize things.

"While sales of this genre are down 46% year-to-date," explains Frazier, "unit sales are down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollar sales decline. It's still the third best-selling genre for the year after General Action and Multiple/Other Sports (where Wii Fit resides)."

Given the saturation of the music game genre, it's hardly surprising that sales are down. Evil publisher Activision releases several Guitar Hero games a year, and then there's Rock Band, SingStar, and plenty of bottom-shelf "me too" games that aren't important enough to be mentioned. We simply don't need all these plastic peripheral music games, and even of the ones we do need, there are too many spin-offs and sequels.

I hope the industry cools its jets before the bottom falls out of the whole thing. The mainstream market has a ridiculous tolerance for things, but there is always a breaking point.

Jim, after some of the abbhorent pictures you've used as headers lately - allow me to accept that picture as reparations on behalf of the community.

It was pretty inevitable really. I can't fathom the reasons why games publishers just blindly look away from incoming disasters like this. They knew they were oversaturating the market at rapid pace and then they always release a statement avoiding the real issue.

Oh, it's the dollar, is it? Not the fact that everybody is suffocated by these friggin' things. Bejeebus, even George Harrison's son doesn't even know the difference between Rock Band and Guitar Hero...and he worked on one of these bloody things!

Whatevs. Just so long as Harmonix keeps pushing great DLC they can saturate the shelves all they want.

And that header is purty.

Everyone already has one of these games.

If you release one every month, then this is what happens.

*gasp*

Oversaturation is the point of contention here, from an all-encompassing industry standpoint. Too much of a good thing always ruins that good thing, and this is a golden rule of any, nay, EVERY entertainment medium. It's the same reason why songs on the radio get "played out," TV programs become "stale" (which is why I love the BBC - they're smart enough to know when to call it quits most of the time, just look at the brilliant Life On Mars), and why nobody in their right mind wants to sit through Titanic again.

George Harrisons son is the reason Beatles: Rock Band even happened. He brought up the idea to Harmonix and basically laid the ground work to get the shareholders on board.

Saying he doesnt know the difference between the two games is pretty asinine.

That said, thanks a lot Activision, you officially supersaturated the market and made people get sick of the genre. Then again if you look at Amazons top selling games, Rock Band 2 (yes, RB2, not Beatles) is about to overtake Guitar Hero 5 in sales. So maybe they didn't hurt the genre itself as much as they hurt themselves.

It would be curious as to what would happen if the 'bottom' did 'fall out'. Maybe the endless stream of music games will end.

God I hope so.

46% is a big number when you consider sales and the amount it already sold.

I contribute to this epidemic. I cannot see myself buying another music game. No more plastic instruments for me.

Fuck off DJ Hero, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero. Same goes to any others I missed.

Actually, fuck extra peripherals in general. If you can't do it with the controller: STOP.

I blame Activision for the reuse after reuse of Guitar Hero. Rockband hasn't been as bad but Guitar Hero has been overkill for as long as I can remember. What do they do now besides copying Rockband anyways?

I don't think the genre's dead, but it's also never again going to be as big as it's been. The fact is (like Kaspar said), everybody's pretty much already bought the rhythm game/games they're interested in. As long as they keep the RB2 DLC flowing, I'll never need to buy another rhythm game again.

(Peripheral-based, that is. Show me Gitaroo Man 2 or UmJammer 2 and I'll empty my wallet in exchange.)

Will the industry never learn? This is the same shit that caused the crash in the 80's. If you pump out stuff non-stop you flood the market and when the games don't improve any (or in some cases get far worse) people stop buying. Crap like this almost killed the gaming industry before. Obviously, this is on a much smaller scale within a certain genre, but if the devs (mostly Acitvision) paid any attention to history they should have known that releasing the games in a more controlled and spread out manner would not them far more money in the long run because it would be healthier for the genre.

Yes, Activision is to blame. They are ruining the rhythm genre. HMX is trying hard to make it fresh and interesting without whoring it like Activision. And i also blame the morons who buy the Neversoft GH games. Buy Lego Rock Band instead of GH: VH or Band Hero.

The Beatles Rock Band game should be the last band specific game that comes out. We don't need a new plastic guitar set every year. Just release a ton of DLC.

The Burnout Paradise people (Criterion) didn't do it. They created a platform, and extended the hell out of it.

That's the way it should be done.

Big surprise, there's like 100,000 Guitar Hero games out, I can't even keep track. This Van Halen one they KNOW is over-saturating, so they are giving it away with GH5 like it's a fantastic deal (though you'll still have to swap discs, unlike RB2 where you got that code for all the free songs. Want Van Halen in 5? Pay for licensing, sucker!). It's stupid, and they should stop. We don't need this many games.
The face that this post came out just before announcing Tenacious D on Rock Band makes me even more confident in my choice of music genre. Anyone who cares anything about music games will stick to Rock Band. Guitar Hero has become a bane of the industry.

what bugs me about these games is the way it makes people that own them
think all of a sudden "im a rock star cuz i can play the dragonforce songs on
guitar queero"
ive got a friend who wants to join a real band because he can play drums on rock band...
not cool
this kind of attraction to music is what ruined hip hop.
oh and dj hero
ha dj's are not musicians there rippin off musicians
so screw these games sideways with a b.c. rich headstock.:)

That's the same point I've been making about Activision for a hot minute now. If those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, then I think the company who had a large stake in the first collapse should take better notes before that mistake costs even more the second time around.

But, we are talking about the sequel factory that caused me to love Tony Hawk, then loathe him - and for the most part, it's not even Birdman's fault, he just cashes the checks.

Good, I'm getting kind of sick of this stupid music game fad. All the Guitar Hero and Rockband games this gen are basically the same game with different songs. It would be like if they came out with Super Mario Bros. every year and never changed the game at all, but added new background music to all the stages.
