Multiple Diablo sequels in development? photo

If the hardcore fans have a grudge against Diablo III, they're going to go into overdrive with this news. A new SEC filing by evil publisher Activision has revealed its plans for Blizzard's games, including not just a sequel, but sequels to the popular dungeon crawler.

"Blizzard has released two expansion packs to World of Warcraft; World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King," states the nefarious company. "Blizzard is currently developing new games, including a new expansion pack to the World of Warcraft franchise, Cataclysm, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, which will be released with the new and improved Battle.net, and sequels to the Diablo franchise."

Given Activision's love of five-game-a-year franchises, you might not have to wait so long for Diablo IV after the third game comes out.

well starcraft 2 is going to be episodic based, with wings of liberty focusing on the terrans. So maybe thats what they mean by pluralising "diablo sequels". Im sure blizzard will be juuuuuussssttttttt fffffiiiineeeeeee

I couldn't live without Lord of Destruction, so bring on the expos, imo.

Just don't do that awful "3-game" Starcraft II treatment. Those aren't even sequels, that's just the full game!

Sounds like a console title maybe?

They mentioned they are interested in that a while back right?

Who could have seen this coming? Activision ruining one of the best devs out there by encouraging the milking of franchises...

All I know is Diablo 3 better be an all inclusive game with ALL the classes in it at the same time. If they butcher this game up like Starcraft me and Blizz be done.

But yeah, putting aside the silly Diablo 3 art style rants, it's indeed a bit worrying that Activision would want to push aside Blizzard's typical commitment to quality (where "quality" equals several years for a release).

At this point I'm waiting for them to announce microtransactions in the game that let you buy super-weapons and armor.

I like when companies pretend sequels aren't being worked on. They're releasing Starcraft 2 in the worst way ever, so they might as well do this to the rest of their fans.

They seem to enjoy money.

I have no idea what "sequel" means to Blizzard anymore. Starcraft 2 is being released in 3 separate parts, so are the individual parts sequels? Are they talking about expansion packs? Pbth, I have no idea. If they are literally talking about whoring out Diablo into a 1-game-a-year thing, then I guess Diablo III will be the last game in that series I will buy.

Multiple sequels/expansion packs? From Activision (Bobby Kotick) owned Blizzard? You don't say!

Are they going to have the same graphical style as World of Warcraft as well, or will it actually look like Diablo?

Fuck that company.

Diablo II sucked balls, so I'm not exactly thinking Diablo III will be much better, especially if they are churning their replication machine to make 5 Diablo expansions in the next year.

Here's my prediction:
Diablo III : Will suck
Diablo III + Expansions: More money, more suck
Starcraft II: Will destroy series.

I don't know that I've been smoking anything. I do know that I loved Diablo and hated Diablo II, so I don't see any reason why I'd like Diablo III, espeically if they are kicking it into replication overdrive.

As for Starcraft, I loved the first and am very afraid that they are going to screw the sequel up big time. If it's good at all, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I know for a fact that activisions "mission statement" includes game sequals, all of these people talking shit about how thats all activision is... well you couldnt be more right. I just hope they wise up and realise how to get more out of each game instead of making news ones each year.

This could mean one of two things: either they're going to release Diablo 3 and then have expansion packs for it way later, or they're going to do what they plan on doing with starcraft, where they're releasing multiple versons of the same game. If they do the prior, that's ok with me. But if they pull the same shit they're trying to pull with starcraft.... God help them because they're just going to be having a bunch of 12 year olds buy the game because it was advertised on their now completely watered down world of warcraft. Activision is a cancer that has effected blizzard greatly.

Blizzard still operates and makes decisions independently of Kotick and crew. Not even the Bobby Devil himself is stupid enough to fuck with how Blizzard works. I think we're safe.

Maxxthepenguin's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/03/2010 11:59

Two reasons: Blizzard produces far more revenue than Infinity Ward and operational independence was an important part of the merger to begin with. Bobby Kotick doesn't actually have much authority over Blizzard's development and publishing. I'm not saying Blizzard never tries to rape customer's wallets ($10 WoW pets, sup) but I am positive that was Blizzard's decision, not Activision's.

@ Verision: I can't even begin to understand how you can rationalize loving Diablo and hating Diablo II at the same time, but if that is your honest opinion, so be it.
I would like to remind you that you have not played Diablo III, nor any Diablo III expansions, nor Starcraft 2, so predicting that all 3 will undoubtedly suck is quite silly. Not that it really matters to you how good the games will be, seeing as how you have already made up your mind and will find any way to justify your prejudgments whether the games are good or not.

Maxx, While I agree that Blizzard brings in more revenue than IW, we are still talking about a company that put 1 billion dollars into Activision's wallet in the past three months. And as far as I know, the operational independence of IW was just as strong, hence the firings for the owners not wanting to submit to Activision's whim. Of course, that last part is pure speculation but seems more and more plausible as more information is released.

MW2 took 2 years of development to get that ~1bil and is an outlier. WoW alone pulls at least that much every single year (the exact amount of revenue is tough to figure out, with different subscription packages and China's entirely different payment scheme.) Also, Activision didn't buy Blizzard. They merged. Infinity Ward was bought. It's an entirely different business relationship.

I'd expect Diablo III to be episodic, like Starcraft 2. That is, a full priced, half-plotted game with all the classes, then a couple full priced launches that finish the story.

Which, if true, would make me very angry. Starcraft 2 makes a modicrum of sense, but...I feel like the only thing Activision has done to Blizzard has been make them realize they can siphon more money from their consumers.

Why all the idiots have to post?
fact #1: Starcraft had around 30 missions total for 3 different races
fact #2: Starcraft2's each episode has 30 missions mainly focus on one race.
fact #3: Starcraft had 1 expansion.
How about you treat last 2 starcraft2 episodes as expansion packs? They add extra single player missions and they add extra mutiplayer units. Last I checked, those are called expansion packs. 1 game plus 2 expansions, Big deal, Stop QQ!

fact #4: No, Activision does not own Blizzard. Blizzard's parent company owns 51% of the shares, and Activision owns 49%.

There is one glaring omission. That quote has no mention of the "next gen mmo" that Blizzard are developing.

Does this mean that their next mmo will be a diablo based game? Maybe it will be a diablo sequel in the way that wow was to warcraft 3. Perhaps they just didn't want to mention it as they haven't officially announced it (it's been announced in advertisements over the internet and on their website looking for new employees though), but it might be an idea.

This COULD be a good thing, because Blizzard makes good games. So more good games is better, amirite?

That said...I quit WoW because it has seriously gone down the tubes. You can tell Blizzard has too much on their plate right now because WoW's armor designs, weapon designs, etc. all got extremely lazy and uninspired.

So this could also be bad news...

Also, you guys should remember that Blizzard was and is a stand-alone publisher and studio, not just a game studio that does whatever it's publisher says. Their company - last I heard - is called Activision Blizzard now...Blizzard is not flying the Activision banner really. Now, I don't know how this all works, but what I do know is this: Activision can't take a shit on Blizzard desk and tell Blizzard to clean it up...metaphorically. Blizzard is not run by Activision. It's not even a division of Activision like IW or whatever.

So I wouldn't expect Blizzard to start pushing out shit for cash-cowing, really. Like I said though, they do have too much on their plate and WoW's laziness of design has been showing for quite some time.
