Multiplatform Final Fantasy XIII not a 'betrayal' photo

Oh, silly Square Enix, naively attempting to appeal to fanboys with logic. Square Enix has recently addressed accusations of treachery from stupid PlayStation 3 fans who threw a hissy fit when they found out that Final Fantasy XIII was going to appear on the Xbox 360 as well as PS3. Using basic logic, the company has attempted to penetrate the thick skull of the average PS3 obsessive. A noble goal.

"I’d rather they not think of [Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360] as a ‘betrayal’ or disappointment," explained Square Enix Corporate Director Shinji Hashimoto. "It’s not like we’re cancelling or delaying the PS3 version at all! It’s more of an added bonus for 360 fans. We won’t be putting them at a disadvantage in any way."

Fairly simple stuff, but I doubt it will do much to persuade the kind of selfish moron who got melodramatically upset over this. Hashimoto also addressed, for the millionth time, the belief that the PS3 version will be "downgraded" so it can be ported to the 360. Are people still seriously whimpering about that? Apparently so.

"I’d like to add… I think that maybe because it’s going multiplatform that some fans are worried about the game’s scope being reduced to fit onto both consoles," stated Hashimoto. "The fact is, the PS3 version is what’s in development right now, and the team is working to specialize that version to the very best of the PS3’s abilities."

Something most sensible people knew already, but I guess we need to reiterate it for those at the back of the class.

I think it's silly to call people who are upset about Final Fantasy XIII "Butthurt Playstation 3 fanboys".

Do you people realise that people bought Playstation 3's for this game? The reason they did that is because Square Enix has been saying for years that the game would only be avaible on the Playstation 3. So naturally some of the most diehard Square Enix fans went and spend 400$ ~ 600$ on the system only to hear....that the game would also be avaible on the Xbox360 after Square Enix said for years you MUST have a PS3 in order to play it. THAT is the problem right there.

The biggest issue here is that if you're a fan of Final Fantasy, chances are you're fan of the type of game Square Enix develops and publishes. So not only did many people bought a PS3 for nothing, they actually made a worse choice as Square Enix keeps Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4 exclusive to the 360, The Last Remnant a timed exclusive and rumors have it that Square Enix is hiring to develop even more games for the Xbox360.

so basicly Square said:
"Oh, you know that game that was supposed to be exclusive to your platform and was a very important part in your decision which console to buy? Yeah, we have changed our minds, we're going to publish it on that other console as well. Also, while we're at it, we're going to go ahead and release some other games exclusively on the other console as well, but you'll get Final Fantasy XIII versus in return which we promise will release this milenium....we think. No, we're not going to give you any info on the game yet, but here is a new CGI trailer for ya"

Square Enix can get away with making fake promises, and they can change their mind whenever they like. Those who bought a PS3 can't.

I personally am not very excited about the game as Square Enix is playing it's childish "we're not telling! we're not telling! nananana!" game, but I can understand why some PS3 Square Enix fans are pissed off.

I'd love to see the tone of a thread like this if Gears of War were coming to the PS3. I honestly believe the people giving kudos for a multi-platform version of FF13 would be angry and writing hate messages about the ps3, if the situation were reversed. (well, writing more hate messages than usual)

Such is the typically hypocritical nature of the Destructoid readership.

Oh, and @Jim:

Did you ever get around to buying your ps3 yet? As a "serious" gaming blogger, I would expect nothing less of you than to have all three major systems.

Right?

@ Gameloading: If people bought a PS3 just for Final Fantasy XIII, maybe it would have been wiser if they'd waited until the title was almost out? Then could would have not only found out that it wasn't going to be console exclusive, but they would have saved a significant amount if they decided to still go with PS3. If someone buys a console for a game that isn't going to be out for years, then they're simply being foolish.

I dont see what the problem is. Do the fanboys not see that with this move Square Enix will make more profit, thus being able to fund larger scale and better quality games in the future? Who cares what console it will be on, it will still be a quality RPG.

Personally I don't care so long as the game is developed as if it were first party using the PS3 to it's fullest. That's all.

Wait a minute.
Everybody shut up.

So what you're saying is that Square Enix wants more money for a game they know its going to sell a billion copies on BOTH consoles.

HOLY SHIT STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES.

Also LULZ@ the comments here, "THEY SOLD OUT THE LOYAL FANS", loyalty to a piece of plastic, some of you guys are so fucking retarded.

Alright, I'll stand up for the unpopular opinion here.

I think it sucks because I don't want to see Microsoft dominate, pillage and stagnate the hard core video game market the way they have the PC operating system market.

The XBox is a fine console and there are some good games for it, but think about what people are pissed off at the PS3.

It's too expensive. It took too long to come out. It's too hard to develop for.

All of those things happened because Sony tried to do some innovative things. They integrated Blu-Ray with the console while Microsoft stuck with DVD and offered an add-on HD-DVD drive. They integrated a new and powerful architecture that took some extra time to learn.

Those things added to the amount of time it took the console to grow legs, and meanwhile Microsoft was there with a huge marketing budget to take advantage of the situation.

It amazes me how some people bitch and complain about how Sony "treats customers poorly" and then fawn all over Microsoft.

Well, if Microsoft does serious and permanent damage to Sony's market position and they become the clear leader, they will do what Microsoft always does. Stagnate, and use marketing to keep the competition out.

The Square-Enix move helps make that possibility more real. Why should I be indifferent to that?

The claim that anyone who cares about this is an idiot is condescending and asinine, but sometimes that seems to go hand in hand with XBox fans.

Agreed and well stated. It's ironic that Jim pegs others for being such huge idiotic Sony fanboys but he's probably the biggest 360 fanboy I've seen on this site! He just hides that under a heavy disdain for "ps3 fanboys." LULZ!

Also, what someone said earlier about buying a 600 box for FFXIII is real. I bought the ps3 because it was a FFXIII exclusive, I could've spent 250 bucks less if I had known. But oh well, the ps3 is a better machine anyway.

this is how nintendo fans felt in the 90's, except this time, its not like they're not going to make it on the ps3 as well...

I think Sony's miscalculation was that they thought people would stick with the PS2 until they were ready to upgrade. They saw their huge install base and thought most of those people would be automatic PS3 buyers in time and that the ones who couldn't afford it would stick with their PS2s until the price came down.

That coupled with MS's smart decision to quickly release their new next gen console sold a hell of a lot of XBox 360s.

What I don't get is, after the hardware issues and the reluctance of Microsoft to address them, why to people still perceive Sony as the company that craps all over the fans? They made some missteps, but the PS3 is a rock solid piece of hardware with some fine games.

I don't like Microsoft and I wont support them, but I don't think less of anyone who bought an XBox. XBox fans don't do Sony owners the same favor.

I don't considering FFXIII to be a betrayal but i do consider infinite undiscovery (even though it wasn't good) and a delayed ps3 last remnant to be in that category. I mean really sony fans helped to build square as a company and this is how it treats them?
