MTV Multiplayer announces gaming's greatest aquatic animal, no surprises photo

MTV Multiplayer continues one of their most popular features, and today has announced the results of their "Greatest Aquatic Animal in the History of Video Games" search. Multiplayer's Tracey John had asked me to participate as a judge, and I could have had a tougher job.

The world of aquatic animals in gaming is great and complicated, from the Bloopers from Super Mario Bros. to the Finny the Fish of Finny the Fish & the Seven Waters "fame." Ultimately, the spirit and influence of Destructoid's dolphin-loving Chad Concelmo forced the hands of the judges, and Sega's Ecco the Dolphin emerged as an overwhelming favorite.

I know our own Hamsa "CTZ" Aziz will be miffed that no sharks were chosen as finalists -- was a grave error in judgement made when choosing Ecco the Dolphin?

There aren't many sharks in games though really. The only one that comes to mind is from Jaws Unleashed (from the guys who made ecco the dolphin).

And once again the build-your-own-fish-thing from SNES classic E.V.O.: Search for Eden swims under everyone's sonar.

I stand corrected AND thrilled: The fish from E.V.O. was a nominee!

Ecco is a massive win, regardless of Cha(c)d's prompting.

While it might have been nice to throw some sharks into the finalist list, how dare you suggest that anyone but Ecco should have won? You'll make Chad cry.

All right then. My pick for criminally overlooked sea creature goes to the Coelacanth from the Animal Crossing series. Runner-up: Sea Bass.

Ecco is pure win. When are we getting a new Ecco game? Or will Sega fuck that up too?

I really wish someone would make an amazing underwater shark game. Great Whites are some of the most chilling killers that nature has to offer and there has yet to be a game to do them justice.

Developers need to think out side of the box on this too. Just because it deals with a shark, doesn't mean it has to be in present times. Why not have a futuristic setting? Underwater colonies in glass bubbles you can fuck with. Destroy and flood their homes, drown people and their colonies bit by bit. Fight off submarines and deep sea diving suits like big daddies from Bioshock. Or tear apart an entire underwater city like Rapture.

How terrifying would that have been in Bioshock to see a massive great white slowly drift by a window as you walk down a dimly lit hallway and just as you think he safely passed by without seeing you he snaps back and shatters the glass window flooding the room and you have to haul your ass quick-like. I want to be that Shark!

No offense to Chad or any of the judges, but Linda the Lungfish was the right answer. It's a sad day for Lungfish lovers.
