In the time between Rock Band 2's release and Rock Band 3's announcement we have had Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, Band Hero and DJ Hero, not to mention the fresh announcement of Guitar Hero 6. MTV Games has noticed, and isn't prepared to let Activision off the hook while it pimps its own music game.
"At E3, you'll see that Harmonix has spent two years on an engine upgrade and creating the next evolution of Rock Band," says MTV Games boss Scott Guthrie. "Unlike the other guy, we haven't been bringing a new game out every year. Sure, last year we had The Beatles but that was more about the content. This time we have lots of great, new music and some new consumer features you will find interesting."
It would be wrong to pretend that Rock Band hasn't had its fair share of releases (Guthrie didn't recall Rock Band Unplugged or Rock Band iPhone) but the franchise is nowhere near as whored out at Guitar Hero. Activision has managed to eclipse even Dynasty Warriors when it comes to shameless sequels and spin-offs, and that's really saying something. It'd be great to have more publishers with some sort of restraint, rather than acting like two-year-olds in a room full of toys.

Van Halen, Metallica, Band Hero, Encore, Smash Hits, On Tour, Decades, Modern Hits, GH 5 Mobile, GH 5, Aerosmith (11)
Unplugged, iPhone, Rock Band Mobile [different than iPhone], LEGO, Beatles, Green Day, all the full retail disc track packs that are standalone games [6], and the upcoming Rock Band 3 (13)
Nice try Harmonix. You're both doing your share of complete global saturation.
Oh, wait...
Damn my fat thumbs.
You can import all your GH 4 DLC, and 35 of the 85 GH 4 songs into GH 5.
It's not perfect, but it is possible.
but thanks for letting me know anyway!
- I actually *just* traded in GH World tour - towards RDR.
Tomorrow is the day.
But sorry... Rock Band is superior in my opinion just for releasing a 'The Beatles' Rock Band. Best band makes them the best band game.
Oh man. You've just let yourself to anti-Beatles trollism. May Mother Mary speak words of wisdom to you.
LOL BEETLES SUCK XD
wheres rockband linkin park?????
I'm confused as to why you included the RB track packs in your list. Aren't they just disc compilations of previously released DLC?
I own all the GH's and I only own RB instruments. They're fully compatible from Aerosmith on.
Is that kinda like having one less testical? 'Cause that sucks.
you gimp, thats not the reason at all. Green Day have a back catalog of over a hundred songs.
so glad i didnt graduate. didnt have to listen to that garbage.
Wow.
Announched/Released since Rock Band 1
Rock Band:
RB1, RB2, RB3, Lego RB, Beatles: Rock Band, GreenDay: Rock Band, RB Unplugged, iPhone, RB Mobile. That brings it to 9.
Guitar Hero:
Aerosmith, GH: WT, GH: Metallica, GH5, GH6, Band Hero, Smash Hits, Van Halen, DJ Hero, DJ Hero 2, GH: On Tour, GH:On Tour decades, GH3 Mobile, GH3 Backstagepass, Guitar Hero Carabiner, GH Arcade... thats 16.
You honestly consider track packs to be full game releases?
Please, please be kidding.
Green Day has 147 songs spread throughout 8 different albums. Though some weren't released on albums.
The Beatles.
ROCK BAND:
Rock Band, RB2, TBRB, GDRB, RB3 (TRPKS are not counted as a game because theyre expansions)... 5 games
HERO Franchise:
GH, GH II, GH III, GH Aerosmith, GH World Tour (here start the bull shit), GH Metallica (last good GH), GH Smash Hits, GH5, DJ Hero, Band Hero, GH Van Halen, DJ Hero 2, GH6, Band Hero 2, GH7, Band Hero 3 (7 and BH3 are comming next year, seriously, its confirmed)... 17 games
Exporting isn't a free pass :P
You mean the exclusive songs that come out as DLC eventually? I don't understand what you're saying.
Harmonix releases GH, then perfects it with GH2.
Harmonix and Activision work out RB and GH3. (the race begins here)
Harmonix takes time to work on RB2 releases it, supports it with weekly DLC.
Activision pumps out GH:world tour, GH: aerosmith, GH: metallica, GH5, GH Van Halen, GH Smash Hits, Band Hero, DJ Hero, DJ Hero 2.
Quality vs. Quantity. A lot of people liked GH2 the best and I don't think it's because it simply had the name "Guitar Hero" on it - it's because of the time and effort that the (then) developers put into their craft.
When you boil it down, it's about the music and how it's distributed. Rock Band does an excellent at this with making the games backwards compatible with each other, DLC, and now, the Rock Band Network.
Guitar Hero on the other hand...none of their stuff was backwards compatible in the past, until the release of Guitar Hero 5. Even then, you can't export ALL the songs from the previous games. That really blows. Sure, there's GH: Smash Hits...but again, that's not the full list from GH's 1 through 3.
Whatever Harmonix does, I have faith in them. They know how to mix music with games well.
It's all about distribution.
Yes. If we aren't counting the track packs, then we can't count Smash Hits, Rock the 80s, or any of the GH expansion games.
The track packs count because they are *full standalone engine* retail games that Harmonix went out of their way to make. They're not *just* DLC complilation discs - and some have exclusive timed content - they're a full effort by Haromix to make a new expansion and milk the franchise.
That's sleazy not to call Harmonix out on that just because "they're the cool one". And why would DJ Hero count? It's an entirely new franchise from a "band" experience, and has nothing to do with Rock Band in the slightest - heck, it was even under development from someone else as something else, and Activision just bought it.
Neversoft makes GH3, GH:A, World Tour, GH: Metallica, GH5, Band Hero and finally GH6
Vicarious Visions makes: Guitar Hero on Tour, Decades, Modern Hits, Band Hero
Beenox makes: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (and now is responsible for Guitar Hero DLC)
Underground Development makes: GH: Van Halen
Freestyle Games makes: DJ Hero and soon to be DJ Hero 2
Vicarious Visions will be handling any future iterations of Guitar Hero from now on.
Just wanted to clear that up.
The big mystery though: Who charted the DLC for Guitar Hero 2?
We might even see a new "Rock Band: [Band]" next year, and Lego Rock Band 2, and a new mobile game.
Chill out, brother. No need to call me sleazy.
There's a reason my comment ended with a question mark.
