MTV mocks Activision's Guitar Hero saturation photo

In the time between Rock Band 2's release and Rock Band 3's announcement we have had Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, Band Hero and DJ Hero, not to mention the fresh announcement of Guitar Hero 6. MTV Games has noticed, and isn't prepared to let Activision off the hook while it pimps its own music game.

"At E3, you'll see that Harmonix has spent two years on an engine upgrade and creating the next evolution of Rock Band," says MTV Games boss Scott Guthrie. "Unlike the other guy, we haven't been bringing a new game out every year. Sure, last year we had The Beatles but that was more about the content. This time we have lots of great, new music and some new consumer features you will find interesting."

It would be wrong to pretend that Rock Band hasn't had its fair share of releases (Guthrie didn't recall Rock Band Unplugged or Rock Band iPhone) but the franchise is nowhere near as whored out at Guitar Hero. Activision has managed to eclipse even Dynasty Warriors when it comes to shameless sequels and spin-offs, and that's really saying something. It'd be great to have more publishers with some sort of restraint, rather than acting like two-year-olds in a room full of toys.

you know who the REAL culprit is, though? people buying them. you really can't blame a company for attempting to make as much money as possible if there's a market for them.

Let's do a comparison -

Van Halen, Metallica, Band Hero, Encore, Smash Hits, On Tour, Decades, Modern Hits, GH 5 Mobile, GH 5, Aerosmith (11)

Unplugged, iPhone, Rock Band Mobile [different than iPhone], LEGO, Beatles, Green Day, all the full retail disc track packs that are standalone games [6], and the upcoming Rock Band 3 (13)

Nice try Harmonix. You're both doing your share of complete global saturation.

Yeah I wouldn't joke too much Harmoniz, because you haven't exactly held back on the releases of your games either. RockBand might be the golden child with the gaming media, but that only goes so far. I think Lego RockBand was the last staw, and does anything give a damn about Green Day RockBand? I know I don't!

You can import all your GH 4 DLC, and 35 of the 85 GH 4 songs into GH 5.

It's not perfect, but it is possible.

I stopped following the GH series after GH 3. The first two were awesome, the third one was ok, but after that I just gave up. I find the Rock Band games much more enjoyable anyway

@Magnalon - That's a start, but being as though i recently bought Rockband drums, which (again, to my knowledge) don't work with GH, well my World tour seems to think they're a mic? Kinda makes it not matter tome.

but thanks for letting me know anyway!

- I actually *just* traded in GH World tour - towards RDR.

Tomorrow is the day.

If I had the money I would of bought all the Guitar Hero games to be honest. They all had the great music I wanted to play since GH2.

But sorry... Rock Band is superior in my opinion just for releasing a 'The Beatles' Rock Band. Best band makes them the best band game.

The only reason there even doing green day is cause they wanted to find a band that would let them put every song they have ever done in a game, and well green day has only 43 songs so that should be N easy one! Lol losers!

It would be more fair to count Harmonix vs. Activision rather than GH vs. RB. Even then you have to take into account how the music game scene changed once harmonix moved on to Rock Band and left Guitar Hero behind for Activision to pick up.

Harmonix releases GH, then perfects it with GH2.
Harmonix and Activision work out RB and GH3. (the race begins here)
Harmonix takes time to work on RB2 releases it, supports it with weekly DLC.
Activision pumps out GH:world tour, GH: aerosmith, GH: metallica, GH5, GH Van Halen, GH Smash Hits, Band Hero, DJ Hero, DJ Hero 2.

Quality vs. Quantity. A lot of people liked GH2 the best and I don't think it's because it simply had the name "Guitar Hero" on it - it's because of the time and effort that the (then) developers put into their craft.

Oh yeah, although Harmonix did put out a lego spinoff of rock band, as well as a beatles version (which is much different from the others and they decided to make because they love the beatles). I didn't count any of the "alternate platform" ones like the portable titles or arcade titles, but even if I did that would just stack the argument toward Harmonix even more. And track packs are basically just DLC for people who can't get online to buy DLC.
EX35's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/20/2010 11:59

The one track pack you can't get as DLC is AC/DC. Aside from the Beatles, at least all the songs (except for like...2 or 3 if I'm not mistaken) from all the RB console games are backwards compatible to use in Rock Band 2.

When you boil it down, it's about the music and how it's distributed. Rock Band does an excellent at this with making the games backwards compatible with each other, DLC, and now, the Rock Band Network.

Guitar Hero on the other hand...none of their stuff was backwards compatible in the past, until the release of Guitar Hero 5. Even then, you can't export ALL the songs from the previous games. That really blows. Sure, there's GH: Smash Hits...but again, that's not the full list from GH's 1 through 3.

Whatever Harmonix does, I have faith in them. They know how to mix music with games well.

It's all about distribution.

Everyone should look forward to the Call of Duty games getting the "Guitar Hero treatment" now that most of the talent has split off and made a new company, leaving the franchise (and most importantly the name) with Activision.

How about Lego Rock Band, AC/DC Rock Band, Rock Band Track Pack 2, Metal Track Pack, etc. Yeah those aren't full fledged games and can be exported to the original Rock Band, but they still take up retail space and cost more than the actual DLC.

Track Packs are options for people who have Wii/PS2, or no Internet connection to get DLC with. They are a GOOD thing because it makes more songs available to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get them.

Yes. If we aren't counting the track packs, then we can't count Smash Hits, Rock the 80s, or any of the GH expansion games.

The track packs count because they are *full standalone engine* retail games that Harmonix went out of their way to make. They're not *just* DLC complilation discs - and some have exclusive timed content - they're a full effort by Haromix to make a new expansion and milk the franchise.

That's sleazy not to call Harmonix out on that just because "they're the cool one". And why would DJ Hero count? It's an entirely new franchise from a "band" experience, and has nothing to do with Rock Band in the slightest - heck, it was even under development from someone else as something else, and Activision just bought it.

Harmonix makes GH1, GH2/360, and finish their contract with GH:80s
Neversoft makes GH3, GH:A, World Tour, GH: Metallica, GH5, Band Hero and finally GH6
Vicarious Visions makes: Guitar Hero on Tour, Decades, Modern Hits, Band Hero
Beenox makes: Guitar Hero Smash Hits (and now is responsible for Guitar Hero DLC)
Underground Development makes: GH: Van Halen
Freestyle Games makes: DJ Hero and soon to be DJ Hero 2

Vicarious Visions will be handling any future iterations of Guitar Hero from now on.

Just wanted to clear that up.

The big mystery though: Who charted the DLC for Guitar Hero 2?
Chris Carter's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/20/2010 12:15

Also, citing the history of the GH franchise versus Harmonix isn't effective. GH has a history of milking their games slowly but surely - but Harmonix wasn't a milker until *just* recently, when they basically went overboard with all their recent games.

We might even see a new "Rock Band: [Band]" next year, and Lego Rock Band 2, and a new mobile game.

Guitar Hero is better. It plays much more like real instruments which, in my opinion, makes for a better game. The only reason Rock Band has more songs is only because of MTV, and still the Guitar Hero series has amazing songs. Also how many of the Guitar Hero games or Rock Band games have or will you acctually play? The only reason there are so many are so different people can play the game even if they only have a DS or the like (and so they can make money)
