Mt. Movie License: Paramount gets into the games business photo

Following Warner Bros., Paramount has expanded their interactive department to get into the videogames business.

Variety says that they will either partially or fully finance titles and will oversee title development. Not surprisingly, they intend to focus on Paramount film properties and older catalog titles. The group seems most interested in making casual, handheld and mobile games, as the development costs are much lower than a typical console game. They will also continue licensing some of their properties to other game publishers as it has in the past.

"We are entering into deals now where we will be publishing games this year," said Sandi Isaacs, Paramount's senior VP of interactive and mobile. "There's going to be a slate where in some cases we're publishing, in some cases we're co-publishing, or in others we're funding development and another publisher buys it. It's important for us to have a flexible model."

Matt Candler, formerly of Activision, Grind Games, Seven Studios and Six Studios, will act as VP.

What do you think Paramount has in store for us? Should we get our hopes up?

This is going to go as well as their decision to support HDDVD went.

Ugh, cloverfield. I spent 8 bucks expecting a monster movie and got dawson's fucking creek. That would make a horrible game.

What if there WAS a Cloverfield game and you got to play as the monster. I'd be down.

Movies and games are about as compatible as jim and indie games. they dont mix.

They just dont have the time they need to develop the game to be good or even great. I mean there was lots n lots of room for error in the 8-bit days to get a movie based game halfway decent, to the point its enjoyable. Yet still managing to butcher it! back to the future for example. was just WTF.

But today they just butcher it even worse, gaming build for fantastic 4 should have been easy to do, with simple drop in drop out 4 way co-op. but they only made local / had enough time to make it local. but it was still poor enough when i rented that.

the only movie game i'ld like to see from paramount in todays standard graphics [ie. unreal engine 3] is Full Metal Jacket. but even then they'ld butcher it. pvt. joker, playable character arc or selectable players gears of war style (though creating movie paradox's with pvt. pile, pvt. cowboy, pvt snowball etc) half the game in the training boot camp laughing every second at gunnery sgt. hartman etc. then the rest some war & photos... problem is it may just turn into lost via domus 2 there and i just shuddered with fear.

sorry for wasting ur time XD

No x 3 billion. They don't get it, they just see dollar signs. Yes, great developers make money, but that's not their prime motive.

Keep making crap movies. Games have enough problems to work out as it is.

Man I can't wait until all the Boomers go away.

Oh, don't worry. You wouldn't have noticed it since they filmed it using the realistic filming style of shaky cam. Also called "Playing off the YouTube era mantra 'terrible is the new awesome'".

This isn't much of a surprise, with games making more money than films and offering more content for the price.

However, I don't see this ending well because of the age old way that hollywood studios like to do business. They'll want a game finished to run out in time with a film, not giving developers enough time to develop the damn game properly.

We need only look as far as trash like the Jumper game, to see where good talent is being wasted, in the name of extra profit and nothing more.

If hollywood can follow the game industry model, let the creative people do their thing unhindered, instead of trying to lead them, they'd stand more chance of success. Go see Lorne Lanning and co, and they'll give you some valuable advice from their experience. Even John Woo's outfit has an idea of whats needed.

With hollywood studios not even being able to handle and adjust to how we want to consume films online, I don't hold much hope, for this toe dip into games from really going anywhere.

I don't see what the problem is. This just means a larger gaming library for us gimps so why not support it? Cmon everybody would just love to get their hands on Gease Lightning: The Videogame
