Microsoft has announced today the launch of the "Xbox LIVE Film Club," a unique initiative that will offer up sneak preview screenings of films to users via Xbox LIVE.

"We've got some truly compelling blockbuster titles and HD content on our Xbox LIVE Video Store Service," said Microsoft UK's James Houlton. "Now with the launch of the 'Xbox Film Club,' Xbox fans will be able to get the jump on their friends and see some of the biggest films of the year before anybody else."

Microsoft is pointing people to a Web site for information on "how to win the chance to get involved," but it currently points to an empty page. There's no word on just how exclusive the club will be, or if they will be opening to more of the public via a paid subscription.

I'll say this much: I've grown tired of forcing my way into a dark, sticky movie theater only to have to experience ruined by a rowdy movie goer who feels the need to yell directions at on-screen characters. Consider this my application for the club, Microsoft.

Press release after the jump.

[Update: Apologies to any Americans who purchased theater-style seating for their homes; this has been clarified as UK only.]

Xbox kicks off exclusive screenings for LIVE fans

Xbox today announces a unique initiative that will enable entertainment fans to see some of the most anticipated new movies before their theatrical release.

The “Xbox LIVE Film Club” will be delivering a number of sneak preview screenings to a select group of Xbox fans in an exclusive setting, giving them the chance to see brand new movie titles before anyone else.

Commenting on the new programme and the films lined up, James Houlton Xbox LIVE Marketing Manager, Microsoft UK said: “We’ve got some truly compelling blockbuster titles and HD content on our Xbox LIVE Video Store service, with recent smashes Cloverfield, Stardust, Beowulf, The Kite Runner and I Am Legend all resonating extremely well with our audience. Now with the launch of the “Xbox Film Club”, Xbox fans will be able to get the jump on their friends and see some of the biggest films of the year before anybody else.”

But it’s not just the lucky Xbox LIVE Film Club winners who get see great movies, as a raft of new films are being constantly added to LIVE Video Store. The past couple of weeks have seen the addition of No Country For Old Men,10,000BC,The Bucket List and crime classic Bullitt to name a few.

Cool stuff. Some movies I'd rather see in a theatre no matter what, but others I can see using this service for.

I know it says"select screenings before they hit theatres",but couldnt they just as easily put full length new movies on XBL while they are in theatres?I hope thats what ends up happening,I hope so so fucking much.I would pay an extra dollar or two just to be able to watch the new movies from home.Fuck movie theatres.

I suppose that justifies Microsoft not giving out a price cut over the pond?

If this kind of service gains momentum, it could possibly speed up the inevitable demise of physical formats.
