Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has come out with a huge brag, and what PS3 fans may consider a crushing blow. According to the latest NPD results, Halo 3 has managed to outsell every single major PS3 exclusive combined, including heavy hitters like Uncharted 2 and God of War III. Ouch.
"Just in from research team (NPD): Halo 3 has outsold Resistance 1 + 2, Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2 and God of War III COMBINED ... wow," boasts the Microsoft demagogue.
Wow is the right word. Although nobody can deny the huge pulling power of the Halo name, to outsell the combined force of almost all Sony's major exclusives really does speak volumes about the company's situation right now. I've pointed out during our UK Chart listings that Sony's games never seem to stick to the chart as well as Microsoft's, and that's not an indictment on the quality of PS3 games, it's a simple observation that something has gone wrong.
It's a shame that PS3 exclusives don't perform as well as they should, especially given how ambitious some of them are. It does make one wonder just how worthwhile they are though. These developers pour obscene amounts of time and cash into making PS3 exclusives look amazing, with the very best graphics the home console market has to offer ... yet they can't outsell a game that doesn't even boast HD. That's kind of messed up.

Uncharted 1 and God of War III are overrated imo.
Uncharted 2, I agree with.
I'm sure High School Musical pulled more sales than "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" and "300" COMBINED! But does that make me want that movie more? Hell no. This is just marketing bullshit I couldn't care less about.
Oh.. wait.. shit.
Nathan Drake sporting a five'o clock shadow really is about as edgy as he gets, Nolan North voicing him just makes me think of his twin, Carth Onasi. I'd sooner expect to see Drake in line at Starbucks than in an action sequence.
Maybe the PS3 has too many great games, which forces users to pick and choose and they can't always buy all the AAA titles. That's my theory, at least.
That's a pretty good point. From what I know of the games listed, Killzone 2 is really the only one with any sort of following multiplayer-wise that can even begin to compare to Halo 3. What these players must be doing is renting out SP games and buying the games with the most MP longevity. When you think about, it makes sense. After all, the games that usually have the best sales year-in and out are the ones with the most MP longevity.
And again, I'm more than willing to admit that the PS3 has a TON of awesome exclusives, which makes me mad that I don't have one. I can't begin to imagine how you choose between so many great games.
That said, I think it's funny that Jim wonders if selling 1.8 million copies is enough? The simple is YES. Any way you want to qualify it; brand equity, ROI, etc. Jim, the answer is YES.
I don't think Aaron Greenberg is going to be giving that much objective info, but it will get you your page views.
If anything, it did get me to see that Resistance 2 didn't break 1m in the U.S. which both surprising in some ways and totally expected in others.
Also bragging about a 3 year old game whos dev company just left you to work for Activision seems kind of funny.
I'm no massive fan of Halo, but it's a franchise that has struck a chord and got so many things right that you've got to hand it to them.
Uncharted 2 is an amazing game, much better than Halo in my opinion, but even as a sequel feels like a one off. As an IP I don't think it's very eye-catching, and from an asthetic point of view, aside from its fantastic graphics, its design is pretty conservative - safe even. Trying to mix Broken sword/Tomb raider with Gears of war is a great idea, but it'll never touch the popular heights that Halo meets. Much like Halo will never top Mario, but I do think it is the most identifiable gaming brand outside of Mario (excluding Sports titles and Sims - is that fair? Might of fucked my own point in the arse there).
But does it really matter? Probably to Sony it does, but we gamers can play Uncharted 2 and Halo 3 if we want, scratch different itches, and get the best of both worlds.
But it does prove that Sony haven't even come close to producing that elusive 'Halo killer'
Bragging about sales just feels seedy, especially when the comparisons are so contrived.
Its NPD, so its US only.
In Japan, Metal Gear Solid 4 outsold Halo 3, Wars + ODST, Gears of War 1 + 2, Forza 2 + 3, Fable II, Left 4 Dead 1 + 2, PGR3 + 4.

I think the difference is I rarely go back and play Halo 3 single player, but I'm thinking of replaying Uncharted 1, 2 and God of War III sooner or later. I don't think I'll go back to Halo 3 once Reach "falls" [unless a friend wants to play through the Campaign].
Want to compare Halo 3 with the Wii Major Titles?
Yeah, like to see your reaction to that.
MGS4 is the best selling game on the PS3 period. But I don't think it's worldwide sales are anywhere near the sales of some of those games you mention.
But again - does it matter? Sony are not going anywhere, so I guess the only possible negative impact for Sony could be the lack of will to sign exclusive deals from developers. Which I don't see happeneing to be honest. As somebody mentioned above, 1.8 million copies sold of any game is a fucking good return. Not all games are massive cashcows, nor will they ever, or should we want them to be, either.
but...
is this really something microsoft should boast about, i mean, bungie isnt with them anymore.
also, that a game sells better depends on many things, and halo 3 has been around for a long long time.
give uncharted 2 an gow 3 a year, this comment wont even be around anymore.
i can understand resistance 1 2 and killzone 2, those games are not for everyone.
uncharte 1 didnt had that much of a marketing campaingn
uncharted 2 came out last year, gow 3 in march
come on people, let the games sell
It's all well and good having a little pop at Mr.Greenburg for this; it is a little bitchy afterall, but do you suppose for one minute that if a Sony exclusive outsold Halo, Some Sony exec wouldn't crow about it either? This is competition, folks, not love-making.
I also think that the silent Protagonist and Andydixon have both brought very, very, good points to the table.
