To say our review of Eternity's Child upset creator Luc Bernard is something of an understatement. Most readers will be aware of his drunken rampage through our comments section following Anthony and Conrad's 1/10 review, but it seems that the resentment does not end there. In its own review of the game (wisely sidestepping the scoring system), Kotaku has revealed that Luc is now going back and removing Mr. Destructoid from the game.
This might come as a shock to Dtoid readers who may have paid Luc money on the promise of seeing Mr. Destructoid, but considering the game is now a "work in progress," one can't rely on the final product resembling anything like the version that was thrown onto Steam.
On the one hand, it's understandable ... we did kind of call Eternity's Child the worst game ever made and then everyone said "F*ck you Luc," when he called our reviewers unprofessional. Even so, and speaking of someone who considers himself on good terms with Luc, even after the review, I think it's something of a bitter attempt at a cheap shot.
Ah well ... we'll just have to make do with Mr. Destructoid being in Bomberman LIVE. Here's hoping we don't upset Hudson in the future, otherwise we can kiss that goodbye, along with any other future games Hudson might put us in.
Noooooooooot that I've heard anything lately about Hudson putting Mr. D in another game. Wink wink.
Hahaha, I love you guys.
Not again, please, not again.
Luc Bernard = Uwe Boll
I don't understand why everyone was hyping this game up to begin with. Sure, the graphics look all right, but damn...I could tell that it played like complete ass just by the footage that I'd seen of it.
Well, I officially vote Luc Bernard as the biggest bitch in the gaming industry.
Jim, you cunt. If Hudson makes a shit game, you better say so. Don't lie just cuz you want to keep your mascot in their games! It's shit like that that makes Fox News what it is. Do you want to be Bill O'Reilly? Huh? Is that what you want?
If Hudson makes a shit game, FUCK EM.
Start digging your foxholes, folks; incoming shitstorm.
This really just shows Luc's character. Or lack thereof, as the case may be.
At least we still got Cliffy B on this site. AMIRITE!?
Anyone can make a Flash game with DTOID robbot in it.
But make sure it has shitty controls and crappy animation.
I knew this wouldn't end well. Anthony and Conrad, I hope your resumes are up to date.
At least Mr. Dtoid will now be able to jump properly.
Bad game is bad. Whiny Developer is Whiny. Luc Bernard is Gay Emotional Baby.
Everything that has to do with this game is unprofessional, especially the reactions. Can we stop this please.
I want my money back!!
@The-Excel
lol.
If I was him, I'd damn sure take it out. Free advertising to a site that just raped my child in the B-hole? No thanks. Even though my child was retarded and had a sign on it's ass that said "Juicy Rape Hole", that's not the point.
Dear Luc,
Go fuck yourself.
-Pendelton
(sorry, i didn't do it first time around)
Dear Luc,
Go fuck yourself. Until you learn how to make games.
--Steve
why didn't they try fixing the problems instead of something that doesn't change gameplay? sounds petty, thus is business. oh well.
This is a low for Destructoid. You guys are better than this.
Yeah, really. I mean, what a little fucking whiny cunt. I hope he reads these comments. Little bitch. That's how you make yourself look like a complete douche, Luc.
...what a twit
I lol'd...
While I didn't like the shit storm and bickering, I also thought Luc made an ass out of himself along with many others in the process. This does however put a hinder on my previous stance about Luc probably being an ok guy IRL. I mean, I understand why he'd be pissed at the community but wasn't he supposed to have remained on good terms with the staff? Like Jim said, it does seem to be a bitter cheap shot. I also lol'd because I remembered that with each comment Luc made it became increasingly hard to give him any sort of credit, and this just adds on to the pile.
(From the Kotaku review):
"Just yesterday the game was patched to make the giant bird enemies die a little easier, and Luc has informed me that more changes are on the way – removing the Destructoid robot, adding new achievements, and possibly getting rid of the particularly sadistic roller coaster level, which had me shouting curse words I hadn't used in years."
Hahahahaha. I love how it's the first change mentioned.
Guys, keep it clean. Vicious attacks of anyone are uncalled for. There's nothing wrong with expressing your feelings on Luc or even our own writers (or their reviews), but try to at least keep it clean and somewhat civil.
I'm not necessarily asking you to be nice for the sake of being nice, but there's no reason to start acting like a bunch of high school kids.
thanks nick, this is getting out of hand.
some of you are sure telling him, "go #$%# yourself"
grow the hell up
Seriously, folks need to cut the drama. While I agree that Luc handled this poorly, the folks saying "Fuck you Luc" and the like are the far bigger douchebags in this situation.
My vision of heaven is Destructoid after purging all the trolls and assholes.
What the fuck are you talking about jettoki? The only low here is how low Luc has gone. Go the fuck back to Joystiq.
Meh, an immature reaction from an immature developer. Not surprised at all really.
Yes some of the comments in the 300+ train wreck were unwarranted, but thats what you get when you whine like a fucking baby on the internet, point fingers and then pull the high school girl cop out, "I'm drunk, so I didn't really mean that." Pullleease...
HERE HE IS
THE BIGGEST DOUCHE IN THE UUUNIVERSE...
I feel bad for even remotely sticking up for him. I don't care if his game gets 10/10's when it's patched, I'm not buying it.
I've always had a bad feeling about Luc. I'm both pleased and saddened to see that I was, more or less, spot-on. This is cheap, petty, and childish. He has officially sunk far below the Jeff Minters, Julian Egglebrechts, and Dennis Dyacks of the gaming world.
I was still considering downloading this game, but now I can happily say that my money won't go towards lining the pockets of an unprofessional hack whose only apparent talent is making pretty screenshots.
Was the original aim of the animation style supposed to be mimicking marionettes as the Kotaku review points out? It would seem there is a fine line between mimicking a puppet on strings and the lifeless flash animations you see in many user-made online games.
It's a shame how poorly this entire situation has been handled by developers and Destructoid users alike.
Aaaaaaaahahahaha you suck Luc. Go whine home to Mommy about the fact that the bad men don't like the fact that your video game sucks.
I knew it! I said this not long ago, he only put Mr. Destructoid in the game to try and gain more leeway with the people here of Destructoid and in the end snag himself a better review. Now look what happens, he doesn't like the review he got so now he's removing Mr. Destructoid. If he left it in even after the reviews then I'd be a little less than sure about him putting it in just to gain D-toid's favor, but this pretty much confirms what I thought to be true.
Dear Luc,
Thank you for making me regret giving you the benefit of the doubt. I bought the game, and it is deeply flawed patch or not. The game is inherently bad and it deserved a bad review. Your conduct afterwards was childish and unprofessional and expecting empathy from destructoid was your mistake. Blame yourself.
Enjoy my money, but I can now tell you, with resolution, to go fuck yourself.
-Bryce
No shitstorm necessary.
For the record, telling (someone) to go fuck themselves isn't violating our terms of service.
However, I do prefer that you do that than censoring our reader's heated opinions, which is what most web sites do (some of you were taught to call this professionalism).
Don't ruin the priviledge for everyone else by abusing your freedom of speech. Don't make go Castro on your ass.
Man, this trolling thing is quite the epidemic.
Looking at this I can see that many people are upset. I am not the most avid Destructoid Fan, so it doesn't bother me much at all. But if anyone donated money to have this done, then I can see how it most definitely is a slap in the face to them and I think that does make it a legitimate reason to complain.
I do definitely see immaturity on both sides of the argument. On Luc's side for not being able to take criticism at all. Rather than noticing flaws from reviewers and attempting to correct anything, he responded the way he did. And Destructoids readers for following through the way they did above. Everybody took the low road on this one *save for a couple select people*.
But I do have to admit that amongst all this madness I did find humor. I found it humorous to read a request to keep things clean and so on from a website whoms ending comment to many a message were "Also, Cocks". That is immaturity to the extreme, and I am glad that I don't see it around as often. I felt it was pretty stupid in the past and I still think it is. It seemed kind of like that one kid in high school saying stupid things for attention. And the overall feeling of Destructoid has risen slightly since, I am thankful for that. But seriousness aside. I still found it humorous.
Perhaps I should have read Nick's plea for civility.
Oh well, I've already contributed to the shitstorm. I'm only slightly ashamed.
"Don't make go Castro on your ass."
Best phrase of the year right there.
Its not really surprising when you think about it. I know the game might suck and the review may have been totally justified but the reactions that Luc got from some of the users at Dtoid was ridiculous. It may be immature but in my opinion so were alot of the comments on the review.
I know Luc didnt exactly react well but its understandable why it would be difficult to accept a review that completely batters a game you made. The "fuck you" comments didnt really make it any easier on him.
I agree with Teta
<3 U Niero
I hope the game plays as good as it looks in later iterations, or that his next game is much better. After the attacks on the other thread, I'd take a site's character out of my game, too. Alas, this lulz-trolling is brutal to watch. I'm done clicking on links related to this story. I hope the 4chan bully ethic fades 'round here soon.
@Knives
If anyone bought Eternity's Child because Mr. Destructoid was in it, Steam might be happy to refund for your money. I doubt they want bad press for developers practicing bait and switch. Nuff said.
@Pacopaco
Judging by other reviews, I feel that our editors essentially had similar complaints. Yeah, we gave it a bad score. It was a flawed game. Even Luc said it was "unplayable with a keyboard and mouse". Luc's a decent guy just trying to get by. I don't have anything personal against him, but I would have appreciated knowing about the removal of the character first hand. I understand, though. He must be busy fixing some bugs after all, right?
So, about Destructoid's reviews.
We have like to stamp our reviews with a bottom line and a score. Many other sites don't do that, and I respect that, but Destructoid does and we deal with the consequences. People read us for opinion, and we're happy to spell it out in the clearest way possible -- sometimes even numerically.
Anyway, I think we all learned something here, except that I don't know if we would have done anything different another go-around. If anyone has a problem with our editor's blunt choice of words, there's plenty of editors in other places happy to hold their tongues.
Haha "editor's blunt choice of words"
Let's take a look at all the people who were unhappy with Dtoid's review:
Luc Bernard
And it's nice to see Niero and Jim addressing this and taking the high road. But I mean come on - this is Destructoid. The whole world is worried about being so Politically Correct - do we have to take the seemingly one site that ISNT and pick away at it so it conforms to make lame people happy.
Look, in summary: If people like Luc Bernard and Robert Summa like to talk smack about this site - YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING VERY RIGHT.
I'd never heard of this game before yesterday. I purchased it out of curiosity. It's got design issues, but it's fun. I usually trust Destructoid's reviews (Lost Odyssey FTW), but a 1/10 is laughable. Why is there so much hate for a $5 game with gorgeous visuals, a cool soundtrack, and passable gameplay?
As for Luc, this game means everything to him - what is with the schadenfreude around here? He called the review unprofessional, and you know what? He was right.
It's a bullshit that Kotaku doesn't get called out even though they said pretty much the same thing as the Dtoid review except without the control issue since they probably played the patch.
As for Mr D being removed... well you wouldn't want our mascot in a bad game now would you?
@Jettoki,
If you only bought it yesterday, you bought the patched version.
The version that was reviewed had some serious control and gameplay flaws.
I was all set to buy this game day-one. But not to be an alpha (not even beta, alpha) tester. I have better things to spend $4.50 on, like cheap wine.
Dear Luc,
Please make cash donations to balth@gamersledge.com via PayPal or insert likeness of me into game, and I will give you 11/10 review. I've been stuck in the ca$hwh0re closet since the site switched back, so I know no better.
I don't even care about your game, I just want to be either a) immortalized or b) $5 richer.
that is all.
