MP demands apology for Mercenaries 2 petrol stunt photo

A few days ago we reported that Electronic Arts had commandeered a gas station in London to give away free petrol. The marketing stunt was promoting freshly released sandbox game Mercenaries 2 and lucky motorists were offered £40 worth of fuel each.

Unfortunately, because people can't be trusted with anything, there was disruption, chaos and arguments surrounding the stunt. As motorists became gridlocked in the ensuing shenanigans, police eventually shut down EA's operation.

In the wake of the stunt, Member of Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green Lynne Featherstone has demanded an apology from the publisher. "Trying to recreate Venezuelan-style fuel riots on the streets of London is completely irresponsible and downright dangerous," scolded the MP. "Whilst a lucky few might have got some free petrol, hundreds of local residents have faced misery on their daily journeys this morning. They deserve an apology."

It's a shame that things went wrong because it was a genius idea, but EA should have known that people would not be able to cope with free petrol, especially with the fuel situation and the current economic climate. Or perhaps EA knew perfectly well what it was doing and counted on this controversy. I wouldn't be surprised.

Mercenaries 2 consists of ensuing chaos.

EA's PR stunt, ensuing chaos.

Well, I think it's a nice fit!

Ahh I wish I went there wearing my towel round my head, brandishing a AK47, shouting arabic and firing wildly into the sky.

Wait... that probably happened anyway, as it was in London

The idea was brilliant. Had they paid $10,000/day for a ton of billboards around the city they wouldn't have gotten this much press.

RROD is caused by your mother sleeping with her brothers and/or father.

*Taken from a actual Peter Moore press release on the "RROD 68% fail rate"*

EA had nice ordinary billboard adds for burnout and they got banned. I cant help but be happy that the alternative advertising campaigns they now use have pissed of some mp. Sweet sweet irony.

This whole thing is pretty hilarious to me. EA is pretty brilliant for choosing to give away free gas. They could have had an event where they gave away 40 pounds cash and it would have caused less chaos. There's just such a stigma surrounding gas prices, that it's like it's worth more than gold. People hear "free gas", and they turn into chickens with their heads cut off.

People are so stupid.

this has been done enough times that they knew that this would cause problems thus giving them more than enough press... like candy from a baby... they'll give their apology and go straight to the bank...

I'd hardly call it a "riot". Everyone lined up in their cars and waited patiently for 30 minutes. Gosh EA, you really brings out the worst in people.

After converion from liters to Gallons isn't gas in England about $8 USD per gallon? And I thought we had it bad here.

Is the average annual income there high enough that this isn't a greater issue yet? I can't imagine what would happen on the US if gas went up to $8. All the folks who feel entitled to drive SUVs would demand we'd invade some country and simply take the oil.

People like me who are 6'6" don't have the option of driving tiny gas efficient cars, so when I say that gas here in Colorado is 3.69$ per gallon I say to the UK: IN YOUR FACE!

also, i don't think most readers will know what an MP is, Mr. Sterling. You and your crazy shenanigans had me thinking about other naughty stuff.

I think it's your people's faults. They did the same thing here in Santa Monica and I don't remember anybody raising such a stink. Also, we call it gasoline. Maybe that's the difference.

@D-Nez: In Europe fuel faces a fiscal pressure of about 50%. Therefore, in your math, it went from 6 to 8$ per gallon. Still sucks, though.

I think the main issue surrounds the fact that the event was poorly organized. There were apparently no diversions or even police notification before the event took place.
